Book Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals

Download or read book Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals written by R.J. Elliott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ``Optical Properties of Mixed Crystals'' is concerned with the description of optical processes in substitutionally disordered semiconductors and insulators which can be basically described through their elementary excitations. Two of the chapters relate to the phonon response including the effect of side bands on electron transitions. Two relate to electronic spectra, one on photoelectron spectroscopy and the other on excitons. A further chapter deals with magnons in magnetic crystals and a final chapter is related to fluctuations and band edge effects. Each chapter deals with a specific class of excitation, but the book makes it clear that the fundamental structure of the excitation spectra, including band formation, band tailing and localisation is common to every type of excitation. The volume shows how some basic concepts and ideas can be widely applied to bring coherence and understanding to a diverse area of solid state physics. It therefore provides an up-to-date summary of the experimental and theoretical situation in an important and rapidly developing field and brings together for the first time a discussion of the many different types of spectra which appear in mixed crystals.

Book Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic Molecules and Crystals V2

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic Molecules and Crystals V2 written by D.S. Chemla and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic Molecules and Crystals, Volume 2 deals with the nonlinear optical properties of organic molecules and crystals, with emphasis on cubic nonlinear optical effects and and the intermolecular bond. Topics covered include the basic structural and electronic properties of polydiacetylenes; cubic effects in polydiacetylene solutions and films; and degenerate third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of polydiacetylenes. Dimensionality effects and scaling laws in nonlinear optical susceptibilities are also considered. This volume is comprised of seven chapters divided into two sections and begins with a discussion on the basic structural and electronic properties of polydiacetylenes as well as their methods of preparation. Cubic nonlinearities in polydiacetylene solutions and films are then examined, paying particular attention to polarization in one-dimensional media; multiple reflections of fundamental and harmonic waves; and harmonic generation in an absorbing medium. The following chapters focus on degenerate third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of polydiacetylenes; dimensionality effects and scaling laws in nonlinear optical susceptibilities; polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of long molecules; and resonant molecular optics. The final chapter analyzes the nonlinear optics of a wide range of compounds that are held together by intermolecular bonding and form supramolecular assemblies. This monograph will be a useful resource for physicists, physical and organic chemists, and those in the field of quantum electronics.

Book InAs1 XPX Semiconductor Solid Solutions in Modern Electronics

Download or read book InAs1 XPX Semiconductor Solid Solutions in Modern Electronics written by Nodar Kekelidze and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor-based devices with increased reliability, low cost, unusual lightness, small size, and minimal service have become an important part of our daily lives. It is difficult to imagine life without electronic vehicles, TVs, computers, smartphones, medical networks, and global e-commerce. As this book argues, semiconductors are the main “driving force” behind economic strength, national security, and resilience in times of crisis. However, novel types of semiconductors are needed in order to support ever-growing scaling demands today. Developing semiconductors with desired properties, such as tolerance to radiation, for instance, is of crucial importance. InAs-InP solid solutions present an example of such materials used for cutting-edge electronic technologies. Packed with diagrams and accompanying detailed computations, this book provides a comprehensive coverage of InAs1-xPx solid solutions, from the production of single bulk crystals and layers to the thorough study of their properties and to their inexhaustible application potential in electronics.

Book Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids

Download or read book Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids written by Baldassare di Bartolo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an account of the course "Optical Properties of Excited States in Solids" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 3D, 1991. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The purpose of this course was to present physical models, mathematical formalisms and experimental techniques relevant to the optical properties of excited states in solids. Some active physical species, such as ions or radicals, could survive indefinitely if they were completely 'isolated in space. Other active species, such as excited molecular and solid-state systems, are inherently unstable, even in isolation, due to the spontaneous mechanisms that may convert their excitation energies into radiation or heat. Physical parameters that may be used to characterize these excited systems are the localization or delocalization, and the coherence or incoherence, of their state excitations. In solids the excited states, whether they are localized (as for impurities in insulators) or delocalized (as they may occur in semiconductors), are relevant in several regards. Their de-excitation is extremely sensitive to the nature of the excitations of the systems, and a study of the de-excitation processes can yield a variety of information. For example, the excited states may represent the initial condition of the onset of such processes as Stokes-shifted emission, hot luminescence, symmetry-dependent Jahn-Teller and scattering processes, tunneling processes, energy transfer to like and unlike centers, superradiance, coherent radiation, and excited state absorption.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on Light Scattering Spectra of Solids was held at New York University on September 3, 4, 5, 6, 1968. The Conference received financial support from the U. S. Army Research Office (Durham), The New York State Science and Technology Foundation, the U. S. Office of Naval Research, and The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of New York University. Co-sponsoring the Conference was the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. The initial conception for the Light Scattering Conference arose from informal discussions held by Professor Eli Burstein, Professor Marvin Silver (representing the U. S. Army Research Office) and Professor Joseph Birman, late in 1966. In early discussions a format was put forth for a meeting to be held the following year, re viewing the state of the art, and emphasizing novel developments which had 9ccurred since the 1965 International Colloquium on Scattering Spectra of Crystals held in Paris (proceedings published in Le Journal de Physique, Volume 26, November 1965).

Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Download or read book Ferroelectrics Literature Index written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.
