Book Optical Phase Conjugation in Photorefractive Materials

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation in Photorefractive Materials written by J. Feinberg and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photorefractive crystal barium titanate has been studied for its inherent physical properties and for its applications, including the locking together of separate laser beams. The output beams of two separate argon-ion lasers were locked together to within less than one Hz for an indefinite time. The technique uses four-wave mixing in the barium titanate crystal. A ring self-pumped phase conjugator was altered by inserting a nonreciprocal phase element in the ring so as to break its time-reversal symmetry. The device could be made to produce controlled frequency shifts and new output modes. Applications of this device are in mode conversion for optical computing. A transient detection microscope was invented which displays the images of moving objects, and which removes the stationary background. This all-optical device uses two-wave mixing in a barium titanate crystal. Keywords: Phase conjugation; Lasers; Photorefraction Barium titanate; Optical computing. (jhd).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appears at a time of intense activity in optical phase conjugation. We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications and properties of nonlinear optical materials were studied, especially photorefractive crystals. A summary includes: (1) Demonstration of a new technique for seeing an object buried in or behind a scattering medium using time-resolved holography in a spectral hole-burning material. (2) Demonstration of an all-optical switchboard using stimulated, mutually-pumped phase conjugation in a photorefractive crystal. (3) Use of optical novelty filters to detect small changes in an optical scene. (4) Invention of an electric field correlator to measure the coherence length of picosecond laser pulses, using two-wave mixing in a photorefractive crystal. (5) Derivation of a theory of beam coupling and pulse shaping picosecond light pulses in photorefractive crystals. (6) Development of a new, multiple level model to explain the nonlinear photoconductivity of barium titanate crystals. (7) Investigation of the role of absorption gratings in beam coupling in barium titanate crystals and showing how these gratings can conveniently be used to determine the density of charge in these crystals. (8) Explanation of how stimulated processes cause the curved beam paths observed in mutually-pumped and self-pumped phase conjugators.

Book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6 written by Serguey Odoulov and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Dynamic Holography Group, Institute of Physics. National Academy of Sciences as follows: The contractor will investigate getting the largest possible phase conjugate reflectivity in Sn2P2S6 by optimizing the usual parameters (such as pump intensity ratio, signal to pump intensity ratio, angle of incidence for pump and probe waves, polarization of interacting waves, orientation of waves with respect to sample principle axes) and frequency shift, a new parameter of special importance of Sn2P2S6. To achieve this the contractor shall perform the following: (1) The backward wave from four wave mixing will be used to generate the phase conjugate waves. Optimum conditions will be found to accomplish this. (2) Study different self-phase conjugate mirrors based on various coherent optical oscillators Optimize the performance of a double phase conjugating mirror. The study shows that SPS crystal can be efficiently used for conjugation of coherent light beams both in traditional backward-wave four-wave mixing geometry and in self-pumped coherent oscillator geometries. The samples belonging to Type I are suitable for conjugation both in the red (He-Ne laser light) and in near infrared (Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns) while samples of Type II can be used for red and shorter infrared (0.8 ... 0.9 microns) region of spectrum. The phase conjugate intensity twice as large as the signal intensity was easily achieved in the red, at lambda = 0.63 microns. It is inevitable that with the same sample and the same refractive index modulation the phase conjugate reflectivity in infrared diminishes as lambda per 2 with the increasing lambda. This decrease can be compensated for by increasing the thickness of the samples used, what is essentially technological and not physical problem. With the available samples we got 17% phase conjugate reflectivity for Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns radiation.

Book Electro optic and Photorefractive Materials

Download or read book Electro optic and Photorefractive Materials written by Peter Günter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on lectures and contributed papers presented at the Eleventh Course of the International School of Materials Science and Tech nology that was held in Erice, Sicily, Italy at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture during the period 6-17 July 1986. The subject of the course was "Electro-optic and Photorefractive Materials: Applications in Sig nal Processing and Phase Conjugation" . The fields of electro-optics and photorefraction have developed rapidly since the invention of lasers just over twenty-five years ago. The possibil of altering the optical properties of a material by electric fields or by ity optical waves is of great importance for both pure science and for practical applications such as optical signal processing, telecommunications and opti cal display devices. These effects allow us to manipulate (modulate, deflect) and process a given light wave. Modulation, deflection and processing of light waves by means of the electro-optic effect is of fundamental importance in fiber optic telecommuniC1. tions and sensor systems w here the light signals can be processed prior or subsequent to transmission through the fibers. Thin film electro-optic materials with suitable electrode arrays on· the surface of the wave-guiding structures result in a technology often referred to as inte grated optics. In principle, integrated optics devices allow miniaturization and integration of many operations onto a single chip. The photorefractive effect, defined as a photo-induced change of the in dices of refraction, was the other topic treated in this course.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this program has been the study, both theoretically and experimentally, of the use of phase conjugate optics for information processing and image transmission applications. A significant portion of effort was directed toward an improved understanding of the photorefractive effort and its application to two-wave and four-wave mixing. The authors developed a model for grating formation in photorefractive materials and have derived expressions for figures of merit, which aid in selection of materials and the optimization of efficiency and speed. They also developed a model for two-wave mixing in the transient regime, and measured response times for both tow-wave and four-wave mixing. Other devices and materials considered for ODP applications include the Hughes liquid crystal light valve and long-chain organic molecules. Measurements on several ODP configurations were performed. First, they used optical phase conjugation to transmit an image through a 1.75 m multimode fiber, with a resolution of better than 15 lines/mm. Secondly, they demonstrated several static convolution and correlation operations, using character masks. Finally, they investigated the use of phase conjugation for real-time optical correlation. Results of each of these experiments are described. (Author).
