Book Optical Phase Conjugation Beam Coupling and Effects of Color Centers in Photorefractive Crystals

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation Beam Coupling and Effects of Color Centers in Photorefractive Crystals written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort was a research program to investigate the (coherent and incoherent) nonlinear optical properties as a function of color centers. The investigation included multiwave mixing (four wave mixing and phase conjugation), spectral, and electron paramagnetic resonance properties of gamma-ray induced color centers. Investigations on BaTiO3 include EPR measurement parametric dependence of energy transfer for two coherent beams, influence of Fe and Cu impurities on the origin of photorefractive effects, resonance phase conjugation, and other beam coupling. SBN and BSO were studied. (MM).

Book Nonlinear Effects in Photorefractive Crystals

Download or read book Nonlinear Effects in Photorefractive Crystals written by Donald Ross Erbschloe and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photorefractive crystals are materials whose index of refraction is altered under illumination by light. These crystals are both photoconductive and electrooptic. When a nonuniform light intensity pattern is present in the material, photocarriers are generated and redistributed, creating space charge electric fields which change the refractive index locally. These crystals are ideal media for real time holography, and applications include wave amplification, image processing, phase conjugation, and laser beam steering for optical interconnects. This thesis investigates many novel aspects of the photorefractive effect. A study of nonreciprocal behaviour identifies a new important consideration in the theory of two-wave mixing between counterpropagating beams-namely the presence of a photocurrent, or frequency detuning between the beams results in a spatially varying beam coupling. A numerical treatment of these important cases provides the first systematic theoretical assessment the control of nonreciprocal transmission and phase shift in lithium niobate, a representative photorefractive crystal. A comparison between crystal types suggests candidates for nonreciprocal applications such as an optical diode. Theses. (mjm).

Book Photorefractive Crystals in Coherent Optical Systems

Download or read book Photorefractive Crystals in Coherent Optical Systems written by Mikhail P. Petrov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the processes of optical information recording in photorefractive crystals and applications of these materials in phase-conjugating devices, holographic interferometry, optical computers and sensors. It is in essence an extensive introduction to this new and rapidly developing area of quantum electronics. It presents physical concepts, fundamentals of theory, and important experimental data. A rigorous treatment of basic phenomena is accompanied by a quantitative analysis, which makes the book interesting to experts and accessible for newcomers to the field. Of particular interest to researchers is an extensive summary of basic physical and holographic parameters of all presently known photorefractive crystals and structures and also a detailed critical analysis of their applications.

Book Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications II

Download or read book Photorefractive Materials and Their Applications II written by Peter Günter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-27 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two volumes that review, for the first time, all major aspects of photorefractive effects and their applications. Photorefractive effects in electro-optic crystals are based on optically induced space-charge fields which ultimately alter the refractive indices by the electro-optic Pockels effect. The fundamental phenomena leading to photoinduced changes of refractive index, the materials requirements and experimental results on a variety of photorefractive materials are discussed and the most recent theoretical models describing these phenomena are presented. Interest in photorefractive materials has increased in recent years mainly because of their potential for nonlinear optical devices and for optical signals processing applications. Most of these applications are reviewed in this volume. The contributions to the two volumes are written by experts on each topic and are intended for scientists and engineers active in the field and for researchers and graduate students entering the field. Over 300 references to original papers on photorefractive and associated phenomena are cited. Volume 1 appeared as Volume 61 of Topics in Applied Physics.

Book Optical Phase Conjugation in Photorefractive Materials

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation in Photorefractive Materials written by J. Feinberg and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photorefractive crystal barium titanate has been studied for its inherent physical properties and for its applications, including the locking together of separate laser beams. The output beams of two separate argon-ion lasers were locked together to within less than one Hz for an indefinite time. The technique uses four-wave mixing in the barium titanate crystal. A ring self-pumped phase conjugator was altered by inserting a nonreciprocal phase element in the ring so as to break its time-reversal symmetry. The device could be made to produce controlled frequency shifts and new output modes. Applications of this device are in mode conversion for optical computing. A transient detection microscope was invented which displays the images of moving objects, and which removes the stationary background. This all-optical device uses two-wave mixing in a barium titanate crystal. Keywords: Phase conjugation; Lasers; Photorefraction Barium titanate; Optical computing. (jhd).

Book Studies of Optical Beam Phase Conjugation by Nonlinear Refraction

Download or read book Studies of Optical Beam Phase Conjugation by Nonlinear Refraction written by R. W. Hellwarth and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrated the first cw phase-conjugating mirror with gain, and made a self-oscillating resonator which emitted a diffraction-limited optical beam while severe phase aberration was present in the resonator. We demonstrated storable and erasable phase-conjugate images in the nanosecond regime by a one-photon photorefractive process. We achieved the first demonstration of a wide angle (approx. 45 deg.) narrowband approx. 1/10 cm) optical filter using phase conjugation. We achieved the first demonstration of full vector-wave phase-conjugation by which an image was restored after double-passing a birefringent phase aberrator. We demonstrated edge-enhancement of an optical phase-conjugate image in real time. Studies of resonant nonlinear refraction and phase conjugation in sodium vapor continued. (Author).
