Book Optical Imaging Diagnostics for Fusion Plasmas

Download or read book Optical Imaging Diagnostics for Fusion Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging diagnostics are used for spatially--and temporally--resolved quantitative measurements of plasma properties such as the ionization particle source, particle and energy loss, and impurity radiation in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Diagnostics equipped with multi-element solid-state detectors (often with image intensifiers) are well suited to the environment of large fusion machines with high magnetic field and x-ray and neutron fluxes. We have both conventional (16msframe) and highspeed video cameras to measure neutral deuterium H/sub .cap alpha./ (6563 Å) emissions from fusion plasmas. Continuous high-speed measurements are made with video cameras operating at 0.1 to 0.5 msframe; gated cameras provide snapshots of 10 to 100 .mu.s during each 16-ms video frame. Digital data acquisition and absolute intensity calibrations of the cameras enable detailed quantitative source measurements: these are extremely important in determining the particle balance of the plasma. In a liner confinement device, radial transport can be determined from the total particle balance. In a toroidal confinement device, the details of particle recycling can be determined. Optical imaging in other regions of the spectrum are also important, particularly for the diverter region of large tokamaks. Absolutely calibrated infrared cameras have been used to image to temperature changes in the wall and thereby determine the heat flux. Absolutely calibrated imaging ultraviolet spectrometers measure impurity concentrations; both spatial and spectral imaging instruments are employed. Representative data from each of these diagnostic systems will be presented. 16 refs., 8 figs.

Book Millimeter wave Imaging Technology Advancements for Plasma Diagnostics Applications

Download or read book Millimeter wave Imaging Technology Advancements for Plasma Diagnostics Applications written by Xiangyu Kong and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To realize fusion plant, the very first step is to understand the fundamental physics of materials under fusion conditions, i.e. to understand fusion plasmas. Our research group, Plasma Diagnostics Group, focuses on developing advanced tools for physicists to extract as much information as possible from fusion plasmas at millions degrees. The Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) diagnostics is a very useful tool invented in this group to study fusion plasma electron temperature and it fluctuations. This dissertation presents millimeter wave imaging technology advances recently developed in this group to improve the ECEI system. New technologies made it more powerful to image and visualize magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) activities and micro-turbulence in fusion plasmas.Topics of particular emphasis start from development of miniaturized elliptical substrate lens array. This novel substrate lens array replaces the previous generation substrate lens, hyper-hemispherical substrate lens, in terms of geometry. From the optical performance perspective, this substitution not only significantly simplifies the optical system with improved optical coupling, but also enhances the RF/LO coupling efficiency. By the benefit of the mini lens focusing properties, a wideband dual-dipole antenna array is carefully designed and developed. The new antenna array is optimized simultaneously for receiving both RF and LO, with sharp radiation patterns, low side-lobe levels, and less crosstalk between adjacent antennas. In addition, a high frequency antenna is also developed, which extends the frequency limit from 145 GHz to 220 GHz. This type of antenna will be used on high field operation tokamaks with toroidal fields in excess of 3 Tesla.Another important technology advance is so-called extended bandwidth double down-conversion electronics. This new electronics extends the instantaneous IF coverage from 2 to 9.2 GHz to 2 to 16.4 GHz. From the plasma point of view, it means that the instantaneous spatial coverage is doubled without compromising the spatial resolution. Other related technology advances, including frequency selective surfaces, beam splitters, ultra wideband baluns, pre-amplification scheme, are addressed in less detail. Finally, the Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) radiometer system on the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) is discussed.

Book All Sky Imaging System for Atmospheric Plasma Diagnostics

Download or read book All Sky Imaging System for Atmospheric Plasma Diagnostics written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mobile optical observatory was established at the Plasma Science and Fusion Center on campus at MIT. It consists of an All Sky Imaging System (ASIS) and a pick-up truck with a camper-like-box. The major components of ASIS includes: (1) all-sky lenses with different fields of view (FoV) i.e., 24mm/F4.O fish-eye -180 deg. FoV, 45mm/F2.8 - 76 deg. FoV, and 210mm I F4.O - 19 deg. FoV, (2) narrow-band interference spectral filters, (3) 2- and 3-log neutral density filters, (4) image intensifier unit, (5) cooled CCD camera, and (6) data acquisition and remote controlling systems. ASIS is a powerful instruments for atmospheric plasma diagnostics. For example, in radio wave injection and chemical release experiments, rich information can be deduced from the measured airglow. The images of highly structured plasma clouds in chemical release experiments will help identify the source mechanisms, producing plasma density irregularities. Measured intensity of airglow emissions (at 630.0 nm) in radio wave injection experiments will show plasma density depletion. Emissions may also be based on estimating the fluxes of generated energetic particles (at 427.8 rim in E region and at 630.0 rim in F region), neutral wind (at 557.7 rim), and plasma drifts (at 777.4 rim).

Book Plasma Visualization Diagnostics for the KSTAR Tokamak

Download or read book Plasma Visualization Diagnostics for the KSTAR Tokamak written by Tianran Liang and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the fundamental physical phenomena of the hot confinement plasma located inside of the controlled fusion experimental devices called Tokamaks, good spatial and temporal measurements of the electron temperature and density fluctuations are needed. Two powerful plasma visualization diagnostics, Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) and Microwave Imaging Reflectometry (MIR), have been developed by the plasma diagnostic group in University of California at Davis. Unlike the conventional 1-D diagnostic methods, they are able to provide 2-D high resolution image of the electron temperature and density fluctuations. This dissertation will focus on the development of the ECEI system customized for the KSTAR tokamak in Korea. The physics principle of the electron cyclotron radiation in fusion plasmas is firstly reviewed, followed by a description of the system architecture of the ECEI diagnostic. Technology advancements in a variety of the system components are discussed, including the miniature elliptical substrate lenses, dual-dipole antennas and mixers array, quasi-optical planar filters, double down-conversion heterodyne electronics, and local oscillator power coupling. Particular emphasis is given to the design methods and major innovations in the advanced optical coupling system for the KSTAR ECEI. This includes step-by-step descriptions on the imaging lens design analysis, as well as the realization of the advanced imaging features, such as independent zoom and focus control. The development of the frequency selective surface (FSS) notch filter is also discussed in detail. The FSS's basic configurations, design principles, and the numerical design tools will be discussed. The previous notch filter designs as well as the new generation multilayer configuration, which brings significant performance improvements, will be summarized. The laboratory testing platform and the fabrication considerations will also be presented. The KSTAR ECEI diagnostic, fabricated and installed in 2010, represents a new benchmark in imaging diagnostic system in terms of plasma coverage, resolution, and imaging flexibility. It also represents a major step forward in the standardization of many ECEI system components, such as dual detector array with mini lens and planar quasi-optical filter components.

Book Development of Optical Diagnostics of Plasma related Phenomena and Applications

Download or read book Development of Optical Diagnostics of Plasma related Phenomena and Applications written by Yupan Bao and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical diagnostics techniques based on coded imaging were developed and applied for plasma-related phenomena and applications. The signal of interest is first encoded with a sinusoid pattern either by structured laser illumination or implement of a diffractive optical element, such as a grating, along the optical path of the signal. The coded signal will then be extracted from the raw data by a lock-in based algorithm, such as frequency recognition algorithm for multiple exposures (FRAME). Two types of non-thermal plasma sources, i.e., gliding arc discharges and nanosecond pulsed discharges, were investigated. Volumetric information of molecular distributions around a gliding arc was captured using laser-induced fluorescence with structured illumination and FRAME. Laser scattering imaging during the formation of a nanosecond pulsed discharge on a at methane-air flame was extracted from luminous plasma emission using structured laser illumination. Furthermore, a technique named periodic shadowing was applied for streak camera measurements, where both higher temporal contrast and effective dynamic range were achieved. The gliding arc plasma discharge was also applied in an industrial prototype burner as plasma-assisted combustion has been proven to be a promising technique to increase energy efficiency as well as reduce environmentally harmful emission. With the help of 0.1% additional energy, the lean blow-out limit of a hundred kilowatt burner was extended from a global equivalence ratio of 0.47 to 0.45.
