Book excerpt: This text treats the fundamentals of optical and infrared detection in terms of the behavior of the radiation field, the physical properties of the detector, and the statistical behavior of the detector output. Both incoherent and coherent detection are treated in a unified manner, after which selected applications are analyzed, following an analysis of atmospheric effects and signal statistics. The material was developed during a one-semester course at M.I.T. in 1975, revised and presented again in 1976 at Lincoln Laboratory, and rewritten for publication in 1977. Chapter 1 reviews the derivation of Planck's thermal radiation law and also presents several fundamental concepts used throughout the text. These include the three thermal distribution laws (Boltzmann, Fermi-Dirac, Bose Einstein), spontaneous and stimulated emission, and the definition and counting of electromagnetic modes of space. Chapter 2 defines and analyzes the perfect photon detector and calculates the ultimate sensitivity in the presence of thermal radiation. In Chapter 3, we turn from incoherent or power detection to coherent or heterodyne detection and use the concept of orthogonal spatial modes to explain the antenna theorem and the mixing theorem. Chapters 4 through 6 then present a detailed analysis of the sensitivity of vacuum and semiconductor detectors, including the effects of amplifier noise.

Book excerpt: th The 4 ESO CCO Workshop, Optical Detectors for Astronomy, was held during September 13-16, 1999 at its usual location, the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. We prefer to remember this workshop as a "meeting of friends", who came to Garching to visit ESO and to present their work, rather than a formal meeting. Based on our experience with the 1996 ESO CCO workshop, we deliberately put emphasis on creating an environment that encouraged the participants to stay together and informally exchange ideas. These informal events began with a tour of the BWM auto factory and continued with a reception at "SchloB Beletic", the conference dinner at a real SchloB of the Bavarian International School (where the participants enjoyed basket, baseball, table soccer, rock climbing and eventually dancing) and concluded with a tour of the Paulaner Brewery and dinner at the Seehaus in the Englisher Garten. The lunch "Biergarten", adjacent to the poster session area, was a daily meeting point. The result was a good mixture of excellent presentations and posters, collected in these Proceedings, and many occasions for people to get in touch and to have fun together, as witnessed by the selection of workshop pictures that we randomly placed between papers. This book contains a special contribution.

Book excerpt: The Workshop "Optical Detectors for Astronomy" was held during October 8-10, 1996 at the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory in Garching, Germany. This was the third meeting of its kind, previous meetings being held in 1991 and 1993, but this is the first ESO "CCD Workshop" that has published proceedings. Most of the leading manufacturers and major astronomical observatories were represented, with the 117 attendees coming together from 14 different countries that spanned every continent on Earth. The motivation for the ESO CCD Workshop series is the creation of informal and open venue of information exchange about astronomical CCD detectors and systems. Judging from the reaction and feedback of the participants, the 1996 workshop was as successful as the previous editions, which is a credit to all who attended. The Workshop was organized as a mixture of invited talks, oral presentations, poster sessions and roundtable discussions, the latter used to foster a free exchange of ideas among participants. These technical sessions were complemented by an opening reception and a congenial evening in downtown Munich, which included a walking tour of the historic area followed by dinner at the famous Franziskaner brewery and an after dinner talk by Walter Kosonocky, who reviewed the history of CCD technology.

Although the first widely used narrow-gap materials were lead salts (during the 1950s, IR detectors were built using single-element-cooled PbS and PbSe photoconductive detectors, primary for anti-missile seekers), this semiconductor family was not well distinguished. This situation seems to have resulted from two reasons: the preparation process of lead salt photoconductive polycrystalline detectors was not well understood and could only be reproduced with well-tried recipes; and the theory of narrow-gap semiconductor bandgap structure was not well known for correct interpretation of the measured transport and photoelectrical properties of these materials"--

The emphasis is on imaging infrared sensor systems, with analytical models that include the radiation source, atmospheric transmission, geometric and physical optics, a detector, amplifier and optical noise analysis, and detection and false alarm probabilities. Much of the analysis goes beyond what is normally available in engineering texts; the noise analysis includes a practical detector/amplifier 1/f noise model based, in part on real world results. The last chapter, "Example Calculations," includes a complete model of an infrared sensor system working in the 3 to 5 micron atmospheric transmission window. The examples, which incorporate much of the work of the previous chapters, shows how to specify the frame and integration time, detection and false alarm probabilities, array size, the angular resolution and so forth. Once these parameters are specified, using practical inputs, the various noise contributors are calculated, and important system level parameters are determined. The parameters include the signal to noise ratio, the specific detectivity (which is related to the sensitivity of the system) and dynamic range. This book is, however, more general than a sensor system book. The "Geometric Optics" chapter includes thick and thin lenses along with the other standard topics. "Electromagnetic Waves & Physical Optics" starts with Maxwell's Equations and ends with reflection at an air-metal interface. The chapter on "Angular Characterization & Related Parameters" includes aberrations, stops, vignetting, f-number, numerical aperture, diffraction and various geometric blur diameters. It also includes determination of array size, field of view, integration time, time delay and integration, etc. In "Radiometry and Photometry," various radiometric and photometric functions are defined, starting at radiant and luminous energy and ending with the Etendue Theorem. Tristimulus Colorimetry and the Photopic/Scotopic Spectral functions are also discussed. In the chapter, "Radiometry Calculation Procedures," conversions between various radiometric quantities are illustrated using a grey-body source; the background, signal, scattered and emitted flux are also considered. In "Detector and Amplifier Parameters," the electrical bandwidth, reset time, all major noise mechanisms, the Responsivity, Noise Equivalent Power, Specific Detectivity, are some of the topics discussed. In System Parameters, there are compact discussions of Fourier Transforms, the Autocorrelation Function, the Nyquist Criteria, Modulation Transfer Functions, Atmospheric Transmission, signal to noise and threshold to noise (detection/false alarm probabilities). The last chapter is the example calculation of sensor performance.
