This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workshop on "Optical Properties of Low Dimensional Silicon sL Structures" was held in Meylan, France on March, I yd, 1993. The workshop took place inside the facilities of France Telecom- CNET. Around 45 leading scientists working on this rapidly moving field were in attendance. Principal support was provided by the Advanced Research Workshop Program of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). French Delegation a l'Armement and CNET gave also a small financial grant, the organisational part being undertaken by the SEE and CNET. There is currently intense research activity worldwide devoted to the optical properties of low dimensional silicon structures. This follow the recent discovery of efficient visible photoluminescence (PL) from highly porous silicon. This workshop was intended to bring together all the leading European scientists and laboratories in order to reveal the state of the art and to open new research fields on this subject. A large number of invited talks took place (12) together with regular contribution (20). The speakers were asked to leave nearly 1/3 of the time to the discussion with the audience, and that promoted both formal and informal discussions between the participants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By means of electrochemical treatment, crystalline silicon can be permeated with tiny, nanostructured pores that entirely change the characteristics and properties of the material. One prominent example of this can be seen in the interaction of porous silicon with living cells, which can be totally unwilling to settle on smooth silicon surfaces but readily adhere to porous silicon, giving rise to great hopes for such future applications as programmable drug delivery or advanced, braincontrolled prosthetics. Porous silicon research is active in the fields of sensors, tissue engineering, medical therapeutics and diagnostics, photovoltaics, rechargeable batteries, energetic materials, photonics, and MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). Book Porous Silicon

Download or read book Porous Silicon written by Zhe Chuan Feng and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-10-10 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the recent discovery of the room-temperature visible light emission from porous silicon (P-Si), a great interest in P-Si and related materials has arisen in the last decade of the 20th century. Crystalline (c-) Si, at the heart of integrated circuits, has an indirect band gap of 1.1 eV, which limits its application in optoelectronics. The visible light emitting P-Si may open a new field combining Si integrated technology and optoelectronics. This book is a comprehensive review of the recent research and development of porous silicon. Strong visible photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) from P-Si and other forms of silicon nanocrystallites (nc-Si) are reviewed. Several proposed mechanisms for the PL from porous silicon such as quantum confinement, amorphicity and molecular PL are studied. The following issues are covered: mechanisms for the visible light emission, physical structures, studies of the PL and EL, correlation of structure and optical studies, surface physics and chemistry, relationships among various forms (P-Si, a-Si, µc-Si), device applications, future developments.

Book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals

Download or read book Electronic and Optical Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals written by Fabio Trani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even if the discovery of the photoluminescence of porous silicon dates to more than twenty years ago, the research on the optical properties of silicon is still a hot topic. The most recent experimental techniques have allowed the successful synthesis of silicon nanoparticles with narrow size distributions, and the realization of light-emitting silicon devices for technological and biomedical applications. From the theoretical point of view, the physics of silicon nanocrystals still deserves a huge interest. While the quantum confinement effect has been recognized as the main cause of the photoluminescence, many doubts remain on the way in which the phenomenon takes place in real nanocrystals. This book summarizes the result of a work lead by the author at the University of Naples. The density of states, the optical gap, the absorption spectra, the static dielectric constant, the recombination times, are all illustrated for several sets of silicon spheres and ellipsoids, upon changing their size and aspect ratio. The book also reviews previous research work, with special reference to the experimental and theoretical literature on silicon nanocrystals.

Book Investigations Into Size and Surface Control of Silicon Nanocrystals for Improved Optical Properties

Download or read book Investigations Into Size and Surface Control of Silicon Nanocrystals for Improved Optical Properties written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery of visible photoluminescence (PL) from nanocrystalline porous silicon in 1990 led to extensive research into the mechanisms of the emergent properties, and optimization of these properties, for use in applications. The widespread use of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in commercial applications is currently limited by three main factors: 1) poor radiative recombination efficiency of the interband transition, 2) instability of the interband photoluminescence, and 3) a lack of scalable methods for producing Si NPs that are both highly crystalline and size monodisperse. To address these limitations, this dissertation correlates changes in the photoluminescence properties of hydrogen passivated silicon nanoparticles (H-Si NPs) with changes in the surface structure, as well as develops new synthesis methodology to produce larger, more crystalline Si NPs.
