Book The Cuba U S Bilateral Relationship

Download or read book The Cuba U S Bilateral Relationship written by Michael J. Kelly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of President Barack Obama's second term, it seemed that the U.S. and Cuba might be on track to normalize relations after five decades of cold war animus. These hopes appeared dashed, however, by the results of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which brought to power a candidate that campaigned on undoing Obama's signature policies, including the rapprochement with Cuba. Several years into the Trump administration there are still several pathways that these two neighboring countries could take to either continue the rapprochement, extend the status quo, or drift further apart. Although it is not entirely clear which direction the bilateral relationship will take, given the varied and divergent political pressures that drive each of the two nations, it is clear that several key opportunities and challenges await them. Drawing insight from the political, economic, and legal spheres, this book examines possible pathways for the two cold war adversaries. Key among the issues that demand attention are unresolved property claims dating back to the 1959 revolution, establishing regularized bilateral economic relationships in multiple sectors of the economy, as well as addressing a variety of legal and political constraints in both Cuba and the United States. This volume tackles these issues by drawing on the expertise of scholars in three distinct fields--political science, economics, and law--while positing viable policy choices and the opportunities and challenges found therein.

Book Open for Business

Download or read book Open for Business written by Richard Feinberg and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert guide to Cuba’s economic opening to the outside world. Ninety miles across the Straits of Florida, an exciting new revolution is afoot. This time, instead of guerillas marching down the streets of Havana, it is a global economy that will upend Cuba. Now opening to the world, what new forms is this nascent economy likely to take? Open for Business: The New Cuban Economy, Richard E. Feinberg’s new book, examines the Cuban economy as it makes its early steps into developing a more dynamic market economy. He examines key issues like the role foreign investors will play, how Cubans will forge a path to entrepreneurship, and the roadmaps suggested by other emerging economies. As Cuba’s economy awakens from the post-Castro dream, it will do so with a flavor that is uniquely Cuban. Feinberg’s book—enriched by interviews and in-depth field research conducted over the last five years—speaks both to Cuba’s legacy and to its new horizons on the world stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cuba is a unique and fascinating country located in the Caribbean Sea, southeast of the Gulf of Mexico. With a population of over 11 million people, it is the largest island nation in the Caribbean, and its capital city of Havana is a vibrant hub of culture, music, and history. Cuba has a rich cultural heritage and a complex political history, having undergone numerous changes since its discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1492. From Spanish colonialism to communist rule under Fidel Castro, Cuba has faced challenges and triumphs throughout its history, and its people have shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity. Cuba’s geography is characterized by beautiful beaches, lush forests, and stunning mountains. The island has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round, making it a popular destination for tourists looking to escape the winter chill. Its economy is centered around agriculture, including crops such as tobacco, sugar cane, and coffee, and it also relies heavily on its thriving tourism industry. While the country has faced economic hardship and political tensions in recent years, Cubans remain proud of their rich cultural traditions, including music, dance, and art. With a unique blend of Spanish, African, and Native American influences, Cuba’s culture and history are unlike any other.

Book Ma ana in Cuba

Download or read book Ma ana in Cuba written by Joe Azel and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mañana in Cuba is a comprehensive analysis of contemporary Cuba with an incisive perspective of the Cuban frame of mind and its relevancy for Cuba's future. Part one of the book critically explores the mindset Cubans have developed living under a totalitarian system and introduces modern concepts of choice architecture and governance that can be employed Mañana in Cuba to foster a democratic civil society. Part two turns to a discussion of the principles that should guide sociopolitical and economic transition policies in line with Cuban culture and history. Mañana in Cuba offers a sophisticated analysis of the challenges and opportunities that will be present in post-Castro Cuba with an eye to intelligent, nuanced, and often "outside the box" solutions to aid business and government policymakers interested in Cuba's future. A unique aspect of this book is that it does not seek to unnaturally mend a decimated civil society, but rather, it offers policy approaches anchored on current Cuban ethos and society. This is a book about finding ways to facilitate the Cuban transition from totalitarianism and a centrally planned economy to liberal democracy and a free-market economic system. As the author argues, the alternative visions presented for Cuba's future matter because one of them will crystallize into the sociopolitical and economic narrative of the country for generations to come.
