A steep excavation with visual disturbances generally is glau comatous. Although there is no typical pressure excavation which would prove the glaucomatous process with absolute certainty. The author has seen atrophic excavations of a difference of refraction of 2 diopters. The glaucomatous excavation is due not only to me chamical pressure but to the influence of the increased tension on the blood circulation, and a simultaneous affection of the optic nerve. The cavernous atrophy of Schnabel undoubtedly contributes in a number of cases to the formation of excavation, but it occurs also in other diseases and is frequently missing in glaucoma.
