Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 4: December, 1914 As usual, the present number is largely given over to the annual indexes. Knowing an author's name one may find, in the Index of Authors, references to all papers that he has published during the year. Where references to a definite subject are sought the Index of Subjects is to be used 'very much as an ordinary book index. In every index, however, there is a personal equation, and if it is desirable to cover the ground very thoroughly it may be best to go over each number of the year and examine the particular heading under which that subject might be mentioned. For example, in look ing up traumatic cataract, one might examine all the lists of papers on the Lens, and also the papers upon Injuries. Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 4 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 4: March, 1914 There are many directions in which cooperation is essential to efficiency, but in none is it more necessary than in the mastery of the current literature. More than thirty years ago the writer started, for his own use, an index of the literature of ophthalmology. It covered between twenty and thirty periodical publications, stimulated system atic reading, the selection of the important facts or views of the papers read, and it is still used occasionally to locate an article or abstract that is not to be found in the index catalogue of the Surgeon General's Library. After this index was kept up for a few years, it was discovered that a colleague was making an index of the same character, covering the same ground. This at once suggested the use lessness of duplicating the work. If we could cooperate we could cover double the number of journals, and so almost double the value of the resulting index. Shortly after this the Index Medicus became available, and although this did not furnish all that one could desire, it was so far superior to anything possible to an individual reader that the private index was soon discontinued. Book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 4

Download or read book Ophthalmic Literature Vol 4 written by Edward Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 4: July, 1917 The ambitious purpose of the Ophthalmic Year Book is to rende most easily accessible to English-reading ophthalmologists all that is important with relation to ophthalmology in the year's literature of the world. This is to be accomplished by bringing together what is of importance and separating from it all that is not. In so far as important matter is not brought into the volume it fails of its purpose. In so far as unimportant matter is introduced it fails equally; since all unnecessary matter renders less accessible the thing for which the book is really valuable. Unnecessary matter must include repetition of what has previously been brought to the attention Of the profession, and particularly what has been noticed in previous volumes of the Year Book. Repetition must be avoided. That this is essential becomes more evident with the appearance of each new volume. The successive annual digests of the literature now aggregate pages, while the lists of titles given in the bibliography occupy 611 pages. In search ing the literature for particular topics the importance of keeping it down to the lowest possible limit becomes clearly apparent. Then the matter included within the Year Book must be arranged with the greatest care and according to some simple rigid system. It should be possible to ascertain what of value has been written on a given topic, or that nothing has been written on it, in the period with out giving time to reading pages that do not refer to it. Unless the matter sought has all been grouped together this will not be possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
