Book Operations Now

Download or read book Operations Now written by Byron J. Finch and published by McGraw-Hill Higher Education. This book was released on 2008 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations Now introduces operations from a vantage point that encompasses both the entire organization and the broader supply network. The author begins his discussion of operations management by first establishing the goal to which any high quality operation must aspire: the goal of profitability. Operations Now presents operations within a context that acknowledges its interactions both within all functional areas of an organization as well as the supply chain network serving it. Thus, students not majoring in operations management immediately understand why they are studying a subject that had previously seemed to them irrelevant; operations majors receive valuable instruction in how their chosen field affects and facilitates other functional areas within the enterprise and aligns with the overall goals of the organization.

In this collection of essays and interviews, web veterans such as Theo Schlossnagle, Baron Schwartz, and Alistair Croll offer insights into this evolving field. You'll learn stories from the trenches--from builders of some of the biggest sites on the Web--on what's necessary to help a site thrive. Learn the skills needed in web operations, and why they're gained through experience rather than schooling Understand why it's important to gather metrics from both your application and infrastructure Consider common approaches to database architectures and the pitfalls that come with increasing scale Learn how to handle the human side of outages and degradations Find out how one company avoided disaster after a huge traffic deluge Discover what went wrong after a problem occurs, and how to prevent it from happening again Contributors include: John Allspaw Heather Champ Michael Christian Richard Cook Alistair Croll Patrick Debois Eric Florenzano Paul Hammond Justin Huff Adam Jacob Jacob Loomis Matt Massie Brian Moon Anoop Nagwani Sean Power Eric Ries Theo Schlossnagle Baron Schwartz Andrew Shafer

Book Julia Programming for Operations Research

Download or read book Julia Programming for Operations Research written by Changhyun Kwon and published by Changhyun Kwon. This book was released on 2019-03-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last Updated: December 2020 Based on Julia v1.3+ and JuMP v0.21+ The main motivation of writing this book was to help the author himself. He is a professor in the field of operations research, and his daily activities involve building models of mathematical optimization, developing algorithms for solving the problems, implementing those algorithms using computer programming languages, experimenting with data, etc. Three languages are involved: human language, mathematical language, and computer language. His team of students need to go over three different languages, which requires "translation" among the three languages. As this book was written to teach his research group how to translate, this book will also be useful for anyone who needs to learn how to translate in a similar situation. The Julia Language is as fast as C, as convenient as MATLAB, and as general as Python with a flexible algebraic modeling language for mathematical optimization problems. With the great support from Julia developers, especially the developers of the JuMP—Julia for Mathematical Programming—package, Julia makes a perfect tool for students and professionals in operations research and related areas such as industrial engineering, management science, transportation engineering, economics, and regional science. Book excerpt: This revealing memoir from a 34-year veteran of the CIA who worked as a case officer and recruiter of foreign agents before and after 9/11 provides an invaluable perspective on the state of modern spy craft, how the CIA has developed, and how it must continue to evolve. If you've ever wondered what it's like to be a modern-day spy, Douglas London is here to explain. London's overseas work involved spotting and identifying targets, building relationships over weeks or months, and then pitching them to work for the CIA--all the while maintaining various identities, a day job, and a very real wife and kids at home. The Recruiter: Spying and the Lost Art of American Intelligence captures the best stories from London's life as a spy, his insights into the challenges and failures of intelligence work, and the complicated relationships he developed with agents and colleagues. In the end, London presents a highly readable insider's tale about the state of espionage, a warning about the decline of American intelligence since 9/11 and Iraq, and what can be done to recover.

Book Manis Valuations and Pr fer Extensions II

Download or read book Manis Valuations and Pr fer Extensions II written by Manfred Knebusch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a sequel to “Manis Valuation and Prüfer Extensions I,” LNM1791. The Prüfer extensions of a commutative ring A are roughly those commutative ring extensions R / A, where commutative algebra is governed by Manis valuations on R with integral values on A. These valuations then turn out to belong to the particularly amenable subclass of PM (=Prüfer-Manis) valuations. While in Volume I Prüfer extensions in general and individual PM valuations were studied, now the focus is on families of PM valuations. One highlight is the presentation of a very general and deep approximation theorem for PM valuations, going back to Joachim Gräter’s work in 1980, a far-reaching extension of the classical weak approximation theorem in arithmetic. Another highlight is a theory of so called “Kronecker extensions,” where PM valuations are put to use in arbitrary commutative ring extensions in a way that ultimately goes back to the work of Leopold Kronecker.
