Thus, when atomic devices are tested at the Nevada Proving Grounds, the AEC must take action to provide radiological control and protection for the personnel involved in such tests as well as protection for residents located in the nearby vicinity and elsewhere and, in order to carry out the requirement outlined above, the AEC requested that the DOD furnish an organization capable of providing the necessary radiological control and presenting the necessary data to evaluate the radiological hazards involved.

Book excerpt: A radio-ecological survey of the area adjacent to Nevada Proving Grounds has been in progress intermittently from September 1951 to July 1953. Samples have been taken periodically of native soils, plants, and animals before, during, and after various test series at distances up to 30 miles from respective Ground Zeros. Data suggest that microcurie levels of radioactive fall-out are potentially available for absorption and/or metabolism by grazing animals at distances at least 15 miles from Ground Zero during the 24 hr following a detonation. The persistence of absorbed radioactive materials in rodent populations, as compared to the radioactive content of their isolated tissues, suggests that absorption is primarily a result of physical diffusion of available ions rather than actual metabolic selection and retention of the mixed fission products ingested or inhaled. Absorbed radioactive materials, therefore, appear to be in equilibrium with certain components of residual environmental contamination during the 90 days following a detonation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the project was to provide field training under actual nuclear explosion conditions for State and local civil defense personnel engaged in radiological defense planning. Previous education, training, and experience in radiological physics, health, or safety were desirable. Selected trainees reported to the Nevada Proving Grounds by April 22, 1953, where they completed a course of lectures and field exercises by May 5, 1953. All trainees were given security clearance to permit access to restricted areas and freedom of discussion with program directors, project officers, and other test officials. The trainees received background information useful to them in their preparation of radiological defense plans in their home States and communities. The trainees and test officials associated with the training course were unanimous in their praise of such radiological defense training. Experience gained by project personnel will be extremely useful in planning and conducting future training courses. (Author).

Book excerpt: The developmental type tactical dosimeter, Type E-1, was tested during Operation UPSHOT-KNOTHOLE. Two experimental dosimeters, the Tracerlab Tactical Dosimeter and the Consolidated Vacuum Dosimeter, were also evaluated. Along with laboratory findings and detailed data gathered under Project 29.1, the test results indicate that the tactical dosimeter, Type E-1, is rate independent and, with the exception of the 50 r tube, records exposures in accordance with accepted film standards within the expected reading accuracy of step-type dosimeters. Recalibration studies accomplished at the Chemical Corps Chemical and Radiological Laboratories indicated that the 50 r tubes were poorly manufactured, being sensitive to only 80 r. This recalibrated value of 80 r for the 50 r tubes correlates with field test results. The two experimental dosimeters need redesigning to withstand rugged field use, must be modified to include improved color standards, and require modification of their basic composition to record more satisfactorily gamma radiation exposure.
