An instrumentation system was designed and constructed for measuring five basic physical quantities: overpressure, acceleration, internal displacement, strain, and air temperaturc. Good pressure records were obtained which show not only the maximum pressures at various locations within the shelters but also a clear picture of the pressure differences resulting from the two shelter designs and the mode by which the pressure waves were amplified or attenuated. Although many of the temperature measurements did not produce significant results, many valuable data on this effect were obtained. Also presented are records of strain, displacement, and acceleration for one test. These records serve to define the secondardy effects of the blast. (auth).

Book Defense s Nuclear Agency 1947 1997 DTRA History Series

Download or read book Defense s Nuclear Agency 1947 1997 DTRA History Series written by Defense Threat Reduction Agency and published by Militarybookshop.CompanyUK. This book was released on 2003-09 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This official history was originally printed in very small numbers in 2002. "Defense's Nuclear Agency, 1947-1997" traces the development of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP), and its descendant government organizations, from its original founding in 1947 to 1997. After the disestablishment of the Manhattan Engineering District (MED) in 1947, AFSWP was formed to provide military training in nuclear weapons' operations. Over the years, its sequential descendant organizations have been the Defense Atomic Support Agency (DASA) from 1959 to 1971, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) from 1971 to 1996, and the Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA) from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, DSWA, the On-Site Inspection Agency, the Defense Technology Security Administration, and selected elements of the Office of Secretary of Defense were combined to form the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct biological measurements of the total radiation hazard within earth-protected Atomic Energy Commission communal shelters were carried out in five shots of the Upshot-Knothole series. Animals were exposed in thin aluminum and in lead-protected containers in order to estimate the neutron contribution to the total biologically effective dose. Mice and dogs were used. Biological end points employed included mortality, hematology, spleen-thymus weights, gut weights, and uptake of radioactive iron in hematopoietic tissue. Satisfactory correlations between physical measurements of dose and biological effect were obtained. The neutron hazard within shelters having 3 ft 8 in. or more of earth overlay was not appreciable with outside sulfur fluxes 2.4 times 10 to the 11th power n/sq cm or less (a 20-kt weapon at 700 yd), regardless of the incident angle of the bomb radiation. Accurate predictions for greater fluxes or less thickness of earth are not possible from the data. The contribution of neutrons to the total biologically effective dose was found not to increase over the free-air situation following transmission through the earth overlay, and hence gamma is the controlling radiation hazard within shelters exposed to large-diameter implosion weapons. Although significant gamma dose levels were found in certain prototype shelter structures, no statement of the probable degree of hazard is warranted because of probable gamma 'leaks' in the structures studied. Book excerpt: Underground earth-covered shelters were exposed G to a 16.4-kt, 300-ft tower shot at ranges of 1230 ft (one), 1450 ft (one), 1860 ft (five), and 3506 ft (one). Two types of basement shelters were constructed in each of the test houses at 3500 and 7500 ft. Instrumentation was by gammaradiation badges, paraffin cubes, and nylon swatches. Attempts were made to measure permanent deflections of concrete roof slabs. Mannequins were placed in several shelters for purposes of demonstration and observation of blast-caused movement. A weighted mannequin in the underground shelter at 1230 it was broken in half; an unweighted one (child size) was thrown to the floor. All other mannequins remained in place, undamaged. Paraffin cubes and nylon swntches showed no evidence of thermal damage. Fallout conditions made it impossible to determine initial gamma-radiation quantities. There was no cracking or permanent deflection of the concrete roof slabs. Except for a wood-covered, trench type shelter, which partially failed because of faulty construction, the shelters showed no blast damage. Thermal energy entering the shelters probably would not have caused skin burns to human occupants. Adequacy of the shelters under full design loads could not be determined because pressures were lower than expected, but the shelter designs were structurally acceptable under test pressures received.
