Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data was obtained on various blast phenomena near and within two communal shelters. An instrumentation system was designed and constructed for measuring five basic physical quantities: overpressure, acceleration, internal displacement, strain, and air temperaturc. Good pressure records were obtained which show not only the maximum pressures at various locations within the shelters but also a clear picture of the pressure differences resulting from the two shelter designs and the mode by which the pressure waves were amplified or attenuated. Although many of the temperature measurements did not produce significant results, many valuable data on this effect were obtained. Also presented are records of strain, displacement, and acceleration for one test. These records serve to define the secondardy effects of the blast. (auth).

Book Operation Upshot Knothole Nevada Proving Ground March June 1953 Project 3 3 Test and on the Loading of Horizontal Cylindrical Shapes Report to the Test Director

Download or read book Operation Upshot Knothole Nevada Proving Ground March June 1953 Project 3 3 Test and on the Loading of Horizontal Cylindrical Shapes Report to the Test Director written by Eugene Sevin and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with pre- and post-test work on Air Force Structures Program, Project 3.3, Tests on the Loading of Horizontal Cylindrical Shapes. The general objective of this test was to increase the knowledge of blast loadings on structures of cylindrical shape. The specific objectives were to determine the effect of (1) shock strength, (2) size (i.e., scaling), (3) ground proximity, and (4) three-dimensionally. Five horizontal cylinders of various size and distance above ground were situated in the Mach region of both Shots 9 and 10. Instrumentation consisted of pressure gages and strain gages, the latter representing the output of a net force measurement system. The analysis of pressure gage data obtained from a vertical cylindrical storage tank, included as part of Air Force Project 3.26.1. Test of the Effects on POL Installations (WT-736), is presented in this report. These results indicate that the finite size of the tank did not affect the front face loading appreciably; the loading on the back side built up somewhat more rapidly than predicted for a two-dimensional cylinder.

This book was released on 1955 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with pretest and post-test work on the Air Force Structures Test, Project 3.1, Tests on the Loading of Building and Equipment Shapes. The test was designed to check and improve upon previously developed methods of predicting blast loadings on simple structures representative of targets of military interest. The specific objectives dealt with the influence of certain geometric and blast parameters on the loading of solid structures (e.g., the effects of shock strength on building height, width, shielding, orientation, etc.). The test items consisted of a series of 17 cubical structures of reinforced concrete construction which were designed to rigidly withstand the effects of the blast. The structures were rather extensively instrumented with pressure gages and were included in both Shots 9 and 10. Most of the structures were located in the Mach reflection region on both shots; two structures were located in the regular reflection region of Shot 9 and in the precursor region of Shot 10. Primary emphasis was placed on the study of diffraction phenomena since the pressure gage data were not expected to be sufficiently accurate to resolve the relatively small drag forces. A comparison between measured and predicted diffraction loads served to confirm certain aspects of the pretest load prediction methods and led to revisions of others. In the remaining instances the form of the data was inadequate to either confirm or revise the methods. This latter category includes those cases in which the test data clearly disagreed with predictions but was too sparse to warrant revision of the prediction scheme.

Book Operation UPSHOT KNOTHOLE Nevada Proving Grounds March June 1953 Project 8 1A Effects of Thermal and Blast Forces from Nuclear Detonations on Basic Aircraft Structures and Components Report to the Test Director

Download or read book Operation UPSHOT KNOTHOLE Nevada Proving Grounds March June 1953 Project 8 1A Effects of Thermal and Blast Forces from Nuclear Detonations on Basic Aircraft Structures and Components Report to the Test Director written by E. J. Schlei and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To augment the basic knowledge of the vulnerability and thermoelastic response operating in the vicinity of a nuclear detonation, various aircraft structural components were instrumented for time-history temperature and strain response and exposed to the thermal and/or blast inputs during Shots 9 and 10. Specimens chosen were box beams, tension ties, stabilizer and elevator assemblies, and structurally bonded metal hat, waffle, and honeycomb core type aircraft panels. These stabilizers were preloaded to simulate an inflight condition and exposed in sets of three, such that one was shielded from blast, one shielded from thermal radiation, and the other un-shielded. Structurally bonded metal aircraft panels were also instrumented for peak skin temperature determination with temp-tapes and exposed to determine the threshold temperature for permanent skin buckling and for bond release. A B-36 stabilizer and elevator assembly and a B-36 wing outer panel were exposed and instrumented with temp-tapes to investigate local panel damage. Samples of fabric and foil control surface coverings were exposed to establish a threshold of thermal damage for each type of covering.
