Book OPEN UP OUR EYES Moments That Shape Our Lives

Download or read book OPEN UP OUR EYES Moments That Shape Our Lives written by Rabbi Charles A. Kroloff and published by BookLocker.com, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, a renowned rabbi, counselor, and force for social justice, has had some amazing experiences dancing at the White House, ministering to congregants, on buses and trains in the Jim Crow South, in the swimming pool at Yale University, officiating at weddings and funerals, cheering for the NY Mets, and supporting the homeless. He has also experienced in unique ways the blessings of being a husband, father, grandfather, and son. As he recalls amazing moments in his personal and professional life, he invites the reader to do the same. His spiritual insights will inspire you to think deeply about the joys and sorrows in your own life. He shows you how, by reflecting on the special and not-so-special moments of your past, you can find purpose in your life and make your days happier and more fulfilling. The author has been deeply influenced by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Martin Buber. From them he has learned that every day is precious and that there are amazing blessings all around us if we will only open our eyes to them. Rabbi Kroloff grapples with the despair that many feel over the current state of affairs in our world. He offers suggestions for how each us, no matter where we are in life or on the political spectrum, can make a difference. Although Judaism is his spiritual anchor, the author draws deeply on other traditions, secular and religious. Ultimately, he affirms his faith in the future of our nation and humankind. But he is not a naive, ivory tower optimist. He reminds us that our future depends on good people not remaining silent, but becoming a force for good in whatever small and large ways we can.

Book Open Your Eyes and LEAD

Download or read book Open Your Eyes and LEAD written by Nancy Capistran and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alarming pattern has emerged in our modern workplace; employees have little confidence in their leaders. The unprecedented overlapping and colliding of priorities, combined with fast and furious deadlines have wreaked havoc and caused lack of engagement. Open Your Eyes and LEAD is a call-to-action, providing leaders with the development opportunity to make smarter decisions with better precision. In workplaces across the globe, people are asked to deliver quicker, better, faster, and cheaper results. However, when we are rushed for results, we tend to skim-coat our actions, leading to diluted, lower-quality efforts and mediocre outcomes. Those who are perpetually involved in fast and high-pressure situations feel tired, stressed, and become disengaged. Some even compromise their values by taking the low road instead of the high road just to get ahead or to stay ahead. Leaders who model integrity, fortitude, and nimbleness consistently create value and yield an impact that is far-reaching. Putting more emphasis on creating a positive culture allows for increased collaboration, creativity, and efficiency. When people are excited, motivated, and engaged in what they do – when they open their eyes as they lead, the result is a chain reaction of smarter decisions with better precision. Open Your Eyes and LEAD shows readers how to become this kind of positive force in the world, and how to balance and manage the omnipresent tensions as we strive for leadership excellence. This book is uniquely situated to be embraced by different audiences - those searching to gain a higher level of self-confidence, understanding, and personal advancement so that they can become mindful leaders in their own lives; current and would-be leaders in the employer arena who aspire to leadership excellence; and both undergraduate and graduate students who are training to be our world’s newest leaders.

Book Eyes Wide Open

Download or read book Eyes Wide Open written by Isaac Lidsky and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestseller, Isaac Lidsky draws on his experience of achieving immense success, joy, and fulfillment while losing his sight to a blinding disease to show us that it isn’t external circumstances, but how we perceive and respond to them, that governs our reality. Fear has a tendency to give us tunnel vision—we fill the unknown with our worst imaginings and cling to what’s familiar. But when confronted with new challenges, we need to think more broadly and adapt. When Isaac Lidsky learned that he was beginning to go blind at age thirteen, eventually losing his sight entirely by the time he was twenty-five, he initially thought that blindness would mean an end to his early success and his hopes for the future. Paradoxically, losing his sight gave him the vision to take responsibility for his reality and thrive. Lidsky graduated from Harvard College at age nineteen, served as a Supreme Court law clerk, fathered four children, and turned a failing construction subcontractor into a highly profitable business. Whether we’re blind or not, our vision is limited by our past experiences, biases, and emotions. Lidsky shows us how we can overcome paralyzing fears, avoid falling prey to our own assumptions and faulty leaps of logic, silence our inner critic, harness our strength, and live with open hearts and minds. In sharing his hard-won insights, Lidsky shows us how we too can confront life's trials with initiative, humor, and grace.

Book In Praise of Penumbra

Download or read book In Praise of Penumbra written by Agostino De Rosa and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guest-edited by Agostino De Rosa, Alessio Bortot and Francesco Bergamo Penumbra, from the Latin paene (almost) and umbra (shadow), can be defined as an intermediate zone of transition between light and shadow. Penumbra is therefore that space, both physical and imaginary, where everything is possible: it is the place of the uncanny, where presence and/or absence can produce wonder or horror. This AD positions the presence of this archetype in the contemporary world of architecture, investigating the ways it permeates different expressive forms – from critical theory to architectural drawing, from design and planning to photography. The contributors illustrate and discuss how penumbra has shaped their creativity and modified their approach to the design process. As a physical phenomenon, penumbra has supra-historical and global connotations; nonetheless, different cultures elaborate its symbolism in different ways. Its wide semantic spectrum powerfully inspires creative forms that hover between fullness and emptiness, presence and absence, past and future. The critical perspectives in this issue offer a wide analysis of penumbra’s expressive potential and the key to an in-depth understanding of this elusive layer of reality. Contributors: Matthias Bärmann, Silvia Benedito, Filippo Bricolo, Edwin Carels, Javier Corvalán, Dris Kettani, Stephen Kite, Giancarlo Mazzanti, Akira Mizuta Lippit, Susanna Pisciella, Renato Rizzi, Paul O Robinson, and Antonella Soldaini. Featured architects and artists: Alexander Savvich Brodsky, Neri&Hu studio, Quay Brothers, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg, and Marco Tirelli.

Book These Precious Days

Download or read book These Precious Days written by Ann Patchett and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

Book Reading Our Lives

    Book Details:
  • Author : William L. Randall
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2008-06-03
  • ISBN : 0190294469
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Reading Our Lives written by William L. Randall and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the background of Socrates' insight that the unexamined life is not worth living, Reading Our Lives: The Poetics of Growing Old investigates the often overlooked inside dimensions of aging. Despite popular portrayals of mid- and later life as entailing inevitable decline, this book looks at aging as, potentially, a process of poiesis: a creative endeavor of fashioning meaning from the ever-accumulating texts - memories and reflections-that constitute our inner worlds. At its center is the conviction that although we are constantly reading our lives to some degree anyway, doing so in a mindful matter is critical to our development in the second half of life. Drawing on research in numerous disciplines affected by the so-called narrative turn - including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and the psychology of aging - authors Randall and McKim articulate a vision of aging that promises to accommodate such time-honored concepts as wisdom and spirituality: one that understands aging as a matter not merely of getting old but of consciously growing old.

Book The Latter Times of Being Crazy For Christ

Download or read book The Latter Times of Being Crazy For Christ written by Willie Torres Jr. and published by Willie Torres Jr.. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is William Torres, but my family and friends call me Willie. It is a pleasure to be here with you today, and I am excited to share my faith journey with you. My journey has been amazing and fulfilling as a new Christian. I have seen God work in my life in ways I never could have imagined. I have grown closer to my faith and have seen Him work in my life and the lives of those around me. I am truly blessed to call myself a Christian, and I am excited to continue to grow in my faith. I believe that I have come a long way in life. Over the years, I have worked hard to become a better man, husband, and father to my children. I have strived to be a good friend and companion to those I have been fortunate to build relationships with. I have learned to appreciate the small moments of joy and fulfillment that come with every human connection. I began writing stories that I believe were inspired by the Holy Spirit. These stories are my testimonies about the different trials I have gone through, and how the Lord has helped me to overcome them. Through this process, I’ve discovered that I can forgive those I once vowed to never forgive, and in turn, my relationships with them have been restored. They are now a huge blessing and a special part of my life. I hope that through my writing I can be a source of encouragement to other people in their faith and relationship with the Lord. I pray that those who read my words will be blessed by the Lord and find strength and comfort in His Word. To be honest, I have had to come to terms with the fact that I am not perfect, but it is in this place of acceptance that I am able to truly worship a God who is. His infinite love brings me joy, strength, and peace, and I am thankful for the privilege of being able to serve Him. As I look back on my life, I can see that I have been blessed with many trials and tribulations. From depression and anxiety, to being close to death, from struggling with alcoholism to idolatry, and even the distance I had from the Lord and my lack of prayer, I have endured much. But even with all of these struggles, I am still here today, and I know that it is only by the grace of God. I believe that God has a plan for me, and that is why I am here to share my testimonies with you. Through my experiences, I know that God has been with me every step of the way, even in the darkest of times. He has been my constant companion, my comfort, my rock, and my hope. The recent pandemic has posed its own set of challenges, of course, but I find my strength in the Lord. Even in the midst of all the struggles I have faced, I know that God is with me, and I am thankful for his grace that has kept me here today. I am here to share with you my testimonies, and I hope that in doing so, I can be a source of hope and strength for others. No matter what life throws our way, I know that God has a plan for us all. May we turn to him in our times of need, and may his grace keep us here for a lifetime. This is my hope, and I’m so thankful for it. I’m thankful for the love of Jesus, and I’m thankful for the chance to Grow in Him together with you. Let’s Grow With Christ Together Willie Torres Jr.
