Book excerpt: Excerpt from Onondaga's Centennial, Vol. 1: Gleanings of a Century In systematizing the order under which these volumes should be compiled and written, it was deemed wise to in the main substitute chronology for too close classification, in the belief that the reader would prefer to follow the line of transpiring events and preserve the continuity of the interesting story. The towns, too, have, as a rule, been placed according to the order of their establishment rather than alphabetically, thus maintaining the chronological plan. The present population of the county is very largely composed of the descendants of pioneers and early settlers; hence it has been deemed advisable to insert as many of the names of such ancestors as could be obtained. To that end records have been patiently searched with quite satisfactory results. Much which might have appeared in the chapters of general county history in Volume I was reserved for what was deemed to be a more appropriate place in the respective towns, as fairly belonging to them. There is his neighbor, the "naturopath," who murders the English language; there is the electric belt prophet, the $5,000 magnetic shoe, the nostrum vendor, who was protected by our twentieth century New York State Legislature (see proceedings of May 3rd, 1906), for two moral reasons: first, because a correct label would tempt the drunkard to know how much alcohol there is in "Peruna," and in "my-mother-took-it Sarsaparilla"; and second, because our good friends the retail druggists want to sell the poison indefinitely. It would do you good to know all these prospectors, in order to be able to send your prescription to an honest place. There are the drummers of Arkansas Hot Springs, of Nauheim and Carlsbad, the Academicians, who while reading a scientific Sectional paper on May 3rd supply all the reporters of the morning papers of May 4th, 19o6, with typewritten abstracts for the populace to enjoy.
