Book Bibliography of Bibliographies of the Languages of the World General and Indo European languages of Europe

Download or read book Bibliography of Bibliographies of the Languages of the World General and Indo European languages of Europe written by and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume I of a monumental two-volume work, a historical record and guide to bibliographic efforts on all the languages of the world, which is designed to serve the professional as well as non-professional reader as a first point of entry for information about any language. By consulting the Bibliography, the reader will quickly be able to identify specific bibliographic sources for particular topics of interest, and thus rapidly begin to narrow the search for information. Although bibliographies of bibliographies have appeared for a few language families, this set provides for the first time a comprehensive compilation of bibliographies for all of the languages or language families of the world, from the earliest period through 1985. Volume I, with nearly 2500 entries in 400 pages, covers the Indo-European languages of Europe, plus Etruscan and Basque, as well as general and multi-language references, including sections on dictionaries, dissertations, and specialized topics. Volume II, with approximately the same number of entries, will cover all other languages. In the Bibliography, most entries are annotated to indicate the number of items in each bibliography and how they are arranged; some information on the scope and coverage of the work (where not obvious from the title); whether items are annotated; and what indexes are included. The Bibliography will long stand as an indispensable reference tool, and should be in every library serving readers interested in any aspect of language.

Book Onomastics in Contemporary Public Space

Download or read book Onomastics in Contemporary Public Space written by Oliviu Felecan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Onomastics in Contemporary Public Space aims at analysing names and name-giving from an intercultural perspective, within the context of contemporary public space. As was the case of Name and Naming: Synchronic and Diachronic Perspectives (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012), the geographical areas investigated in the studies included in this volume are very diverse, referring not only to European cultural space, but also to American, Asian, African and Australian contexts. Being a collective work, the book brings together 49 specialists from 18 countries; namely Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. Thematically, the volume is organised so that it may cover all the dimensions of public space, as far as onomastics is concerned. The specific areas studied are: the theory of names; names of public places (linguistic landscapes); names of public, economic, cultural, religious and sports institutions (names of business establishments, religious institutions – places of worship – and cultural associations, as well as names in journals and magazines); names of objects/entities resulting from various processes in public space (names of foods, drinks and food brands, code names of collaborators in secret service organisations, names in literature, nicknames/bynames/pseudonyms in the world of politics, high life, art and sport, names in virtual space, and zoonyms); and miscellanea. The originality and topicality of the subject lie in the multidisciplinary viewpoint adopted in the research, in which onomastics merges with adjacent linguistic disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and pragmatics, as well as other sciences, such as history, literature, anthropology, politics, economy and religion.

Book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus

Download or read book Making Sense of the Divine Name in the Book of Exodus written by Austin Surls and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.

Book Socio onomastics

Download or read book Socio onomastics written by Terhi Ainiala and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume seeks to establish socio-onomastics as a field of linguistic inquiry not only within sociolinguistics, but also, and in particular, within pragmatics. The linguistic study of names has a very long history, but also a history sometimes fraught with skepticism, and thus often neglected by linguists in other fields. The volume takes on the challenge of instituting onomastic study into linguistics and pragmatics by focusing on recent trends within socio-onomastics, interactional onomastics, contact onomastics, folk onomastics, and linguistic landscape studies. The volume is an introduction to these fields – with the introductory chapter giving an overview of, and an update on, recent onomastic study – and in addition offers detailed in-depth analyses of place names, person names, street names and commercial names from different perspectives: historically, as well as from the point of view of the impact of globalization and glocalization. All the chapters focus on the use and function of names and naming, on changes in name usage, and on the reasons for, processes in, and results of names in contact.

Book More Names and Naming

Download or read book More Names and Naming written by and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1995-11-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complementing Lawson's 1987 bibliography, Personal Names and Naming, this new volume provides close to 2,200 entries, reflecting an explosion of research on names and naming. Arranged into topical sections, a large portion of the book is devoted to ethnic, national, and cultural names. Other sections cover such topics as the Bible and names, popular names, and psychology and names. The book provides a valuable resource for students and scholars concerned with the study of names. This comprehensive bibliography is a follow-up to the 1987 Personal Names and Naming which contained about 1,200 items. This all-new bibliography contains about 2,200 items reflecting the tremendous advances made in onomastics during the past few years. This unusual work explores the many disciplines affecting personal names, from the Bible to statistics, and considers how names are selected and bestowed. The entries are grouped alphabetically in 47 major subject categories, and the annotations are designed to show the user the key ideas included. The category chosen for each item reflects the most salient feature relating to onomastics, and since most entries have more than one possible category, all are cross-referenced, including author, date, title, edition used or name of journal, place, publisher, pages, annotation, and presence of references, tables, or figures. This bibliography, along with its predecessor Personal Names and Naming, provides a single source for locating the relevant literature, and reflects the tremendous growth in research on ethnic names and topics dealing with nicknames and feminine aspects of names (change, law, marital aspects). It is an essential addition to all libraries and will be an indispensable tool of onomasticians, students, scholars, and interested individuals.
