Book The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and the Economics of the New World Order

Download or read book The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and the Economics of the New World Order written by Mary Ann Tetreault and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-01-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and strategic power is not the exclusive province of powerful, developed countries. Kuwait has used its main resource, oil, to integrate itself into the world economy as an autonomous actor rather than as a dependent commodity exporter. This daring economic strategy enabled Kuwait to claim military support from governments hosting its direct investments overseas in 1990-91 following its invasion by Iraq. Based on five years of research, including interviews with more than 200 people, Dr. Tetreault's book analyzes the development of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation in the context of domestic, regional, and world politics. Contrary to current thinking, she argues that multinational vertical integration under state ownership can be an optimal strategy for oil-exporting, developing countries, particularly those whose resource endowments are otherwise highly limited. This book is directed toward executives in natural resource industries, economic and strategic planners in public and private institutions, and those charged with the formulation and implementation of national, international, and transnational economic policy; in addition, it is of interest to academics specializing in political economy, development, industrial organization, regional and domestic politics, and international relations.

Book The Odyssey of a Woman Field Scientist

Download or read book The Odyssey of a Woman Field Scientist written by JEAN H. LANGENHEIM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Jean Langenheim presents her odyssey as a woman field scientist, who crossed boundaries of botany, geology, and chemistry in doing ecological studies. The book includes almost two hundred photographs and maps and uses a unique timeline as context for her story in relation to relevant historical events, significant changes in the status of women, and milestones in ecology from the 1920s to the present. Her research spans five continents and ranges from arctic-alpine to tropical environments. It includes many adventures (such as a forced plane landing in Amazonia and working in the midst of a coup dtat in Colombia) and interactions with diverse cultures, from Alaska Eskimo to Ghanain family life. She tells the story of a rich life of learning and discovery, through difficult and good times, which she has shared with her husband and later with her students, colleagues, and many friends many around the world. INITIAL REVIEW STATEMENTS Anyone who reads this rich and wonderfully interesting memoir will be inspired by what Jean Langenheim has accomplished scientifically and personally during her long and distinguished career at the interface of multiple scientific fields. This is more than a personal memoir by a leading scientist. It is a deeply insightful reflection on how major scientific disciplines have developed over the past half century and how the culture of scientific research itself has changed. John Thompson, Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolution, University of California, Santa Cruz (quoted in UCSC press release http://press.ucsc.edu/text.asp?pid=3771 ) The title of this good read is truly apropos---it is an odyssey of the mind as well as life of a self-confessed adventurous woman, someone always open to the next chapter in an ever-changing life, lived during a period of significant social and technological changes. Theres a solid dose of real scientific research and discovery, tempered by the authors vivid descriptions of her travels, of the wonders of the natural world, and of the cultures she encounters in some amazing places she finds herself. Provocatively, you may recognize and view elements of your own life in ways you never thought about before. Susan Martin, retired researcher US Department of Agriculture, Colorado State University. I liked very much your life metaphor about weaving threads in your life tapestry. It was delightful to read how those threads were constructed and woven. Your life has been very rich, impacting and inspiring many people with your thoughts and action. Francisco Espinosa-Garcia, Professor, National University of Mexico Center for Ecosystem Research, Morelia, Mexico.

Book Guide to Petroleum Engineering Career

Download or read book Guide to Petroleum Engineering Career written by Engr. Azunna I. B. Ekejiuba (Ph.D.) and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to Petroleum Engineering Career By: Engr. Azunna I. B. Ekejiuba (Ph.D.) Historically, human beings have used petroleum in one form or another since ancient times (more than 8000 years ago). However, the birth of the modern petroleum industry was on August 27, 1859, when Colonel Edwin L. Drake used the then popular cable tool (also called churn or percussion) drilling method to drill the actual historically first oil well, on a stream called Oil Greek, near Titusville, Pennsylvania, at a depth of 69 feet, six inches (21 metres). In recent years, the advent of the transcontinental transmission lines and petrochemical industries has increased the value of natural gas (methane) to a fuel in great demand and a chemical feedstock (raw material) for many modern commercial and industrial products, particularly the synthesis of plastics, rubber, fertilizers, solvents, adhesives, pesticides, gas-to-methanol (GTM), liquefied natural gas (LNG), et cetera. Guide to Petroleum Engineering Career is an ideal career guide, lecture note, practical manual, petrochemical production guide, information source (to all categories of practicing petroleum industry workers and enthusiasts who are interested to know more about the current key mankind energy resources), as well as a reference on the emerging renewable fuel economy which reflects the challenges faced by the millennium petroleum engineers.
