Book Return to Viet Nam One Veteran s Journey of Healing

Download or read book Return to Viet Nam One Veteran s Journey of Healing written by Linda G. Myers and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Myers is a Viet Nam veteran with memories. In 2005 he and his wife Linda traveled to Viet Nam with a group led by a psychotherapist who works with veterans affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). From the Mekong Delta in the south, to Hanoi in the north, it was a life-changing journey. Art's story is not unusual. He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps in 1968, a radio repairman stationed at Da Nang during the Tet offensive. He saw only one day of combat, but that day affected every aspect of his life for 35 years. Many veterans suffer from their memories of their time at war. They may bury them, or deny them, or run from them, or act out in other areas of their lives. Alcoholism, drug addiction and suicide rates are higher than average, as are failed relationships and chronic unemployment. Art decided to return to Viet Nam, to overlay the memories of the young man during a terrible time with those of a man in late middle age. It was a good choice for him - and for his family. About the book Art says, "I hope that talking about this journey of healing - and how it has changed me will help other veterans and their families. The idea of helping even one other veteran stop the nightmares and gain some peace made my story worth sharing."

Book excerpt: What does it take to go from growing up in a Mississippi housing project to becoming a master sergeant and a celebrity chef serving in the White House under four United States presidents? Call Me Chef, Dammit! is the inspiring story of Andre Rush, who became an overnight sensation in 2018, after a photograph of his now-famous twenty-four-inch biceps went viral. However, his journey to that moment could never be captured in a fleeting moment. From his childhood working on a farm, to his developing into a gifted athlete and artist to his joining the Army, Rush has dedicated his life to serving others. During his twenty-four-year military career, his reputation as an award-winning cook eventually led him to the Pentagon. His presence in the building when the plane struck on 9/11/2001 led to his suffering from PTSD, and he has become an outspoken advocate for the military and especially for wounded warriors. Every step of the way, Chef Rush has overcome tremendous obstacles, including battling stereotypes and racism. And in this memoir, he shares not only his wounds and what he experienced along the road to recovery but also the optimism, hope, and hard-earned wisdom that have encouraged countless others.

Book excerpt: I am dying. I am one of thousands that received a vaccination that has been eating away my insides for years without my being aware. All the while, I have a card but no care to cure me of all my illnesses. I am hopeful that one of the readers will be able to help save me and the thousands of my brothers and sisters who are sick and dying to find cures. I attempted to meet with people who can affect change but have been ignored, I am trying to provide fixes for the VA's broken systems and help with stopping veteran suicides and I do not want these fixes to die with me. There are thousands of veterans that have already died, thousands of families that have been torn apart by illness, stress and death not just from my anthrax shot but from other military experiments gone wrong and how the government healthcare system is so broken that we are dying while we wait for service. Please walk with me on a small part of my journey through the VA healthcare, small moments of my military adventure and if you are of mind help other veterans who have been injured and denied research for our cure and provide hope of a better future.

Book A Veteran s Cry The Journey Home

Download or read book A Veteran s Cry The Journey Home written by Michael E. Jacobson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-12-30 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Veterans Cry was written for veterans. It was also written for people who support veterans be they friends, family or complete strangers. It was written to those of you who chose to protest- in what we have done, what we do now and what we will chose to do in the future. This book was written to give a little insight into a world that is sometimes filled with the unspeakable. It is a world, which is very often misunderstood. Many vets have trouble relating to non-vets and the reverse is often just as true. As in many professions of public service people sometimes have trouble understanding the full scope of our different jobs and therefore tend to forget that we too, are just people. It was best quoted to me one day by a friend, We were common people sent to do uncommon things. A Veterans Cry was also written as a continuing healing journey for me. In the seventeen years of my military service only a few were spent in combat situations. It was not until several years after my separation from the military that my memories came forward and asked to be healed from those things I thought were long buried; and therefore gone. These few pages were not necessarily things that happened to me. Most of them have come from talking and listening to fellow veterans. Some I knew personally, many I did not.

Book Once a Warrior

Download or read book Once a Warrior written by Jake Wood and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book that America needs right now." --Tom Brokaw, journalist and author of The Greatest Generation "Jake Wood offers one of the most soaring definitions of service I've ever seen." --Maria Shriver, award-winning journalist and author of I've Been Thinking From Marine sniper Jake Wood, a riveting memoir of leading over 100,000 veterans to a life of renewed service, volunteering to battle, hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, pandemics, and civil wars, and inspiring onlookers as their unique military training saved lives and rebuilt our country. When Jake Wood arrived in the States after two grueling tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he watched his unit lose more men to suicide than to enemy hands overseas. Reeling, Jake looked for a way to direct their restlessness towards a new mission--and put their formidable skills to good use. When an earthquake struck Haiti in 2010, Jake had his answer. He convinced several fellow veterans to join him on a ragtag mission to provide desperately needed aid. Despite the high stakes, they were able to untangle complex problems quickly and keep calm under pressure. In this raw, adrenaline-filled narrative, Jake recounts, how, over the past 10 years, he's built the disaster response organization Team Rubicon, and seen the work provide a lifeline back to purpose for the heroes among us. Not only do these intrepid volunteers race against the clock to aid communities after Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Harvey, COVID-19, and hundreds of other disasters; they also fight for something just as important--each other. Once a Warrior provides a soaring look at what our veterans are capable of--and what might become of America's next greatest generation.

Book Where War Ends

Download or read book Where War Ends written by Tom Voss and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Iraq War veteran’s riveting journey from suicidal despair to hope Winner of a 2019 Foreword INDIES Silver Book of the Year Award After serving in a scout-sniper platoon in Mosul, Tom Voss came home carrying invisible wounds of war — the memory of doing or witnessing things that went against his fundamental beliefs. This was not a physical injury that could heal with medication and time but a “moral injury” — a wound to the soul that eventually urged him toward suicide. Desperate for relief from the pain and guilt that haunted him, Voss embarked on a 2,700-mile journey across America, walking from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the Pacific Ocean with a fellow veteran. Readers walk with these men as they meet other veterans, Native American healers, and spiritual teachers who appear in the most unexpected forms. At the end of their trek, Voss realizes he is really just beginning his healing. He pursues meditation training and discovers sacred breathing techniques that shatter his understanding of war and himself, and move him from despair to hope. Voss’s story will give inspiration to veterans, their friends and family, and survivors of all kinds.
