Book excerpt: This book is written basically for Christians. The unsaved will not know these scriptures and stories I refer to. But even they can see them, and get curious enough to accept Christ. There are scriptures especially in Revelation that even Christians have never heard before. Ask yourself why you were never taught these things in church? Christians must start a personal and serious Bible study on their own. The Lord will guide if you will use what He shows you for His work. He doesn’t waste knowledge on people who will not use it. “Cast not thy pearls among the swine”. I pray this book either out of conviction, interest or fear, makes you really get into the Bible. Then re-think seriously what you have been taught while we still have time. “If the blind lead the blind BOTH fall into the ditch”. My punishment [and all Teachers] will be much worse if I, or they mislead you. We go to the Lake of Fire.

Who doesn't love a twisty mystery--a locked room, a seemingly impossible crime, a pivotal piece of evidence that seems to make no sense. Here are 15 diabolically clever crimes that made the author smile and say, "You'll never untangle this one"; but you'll want to keep looking till you find the simple twist that lets you sneer and reply, "I fooled you!" There's not even a complicated logic involved, just good use of your imagination. 96 pages, 12 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

Book Driven from New Orleans

Download or read book Driven from New Orleans written by John Arena and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s the tenant leaders of the New Orleans St. Thomas public housing development and their activist allies were militant, uncompromising defenders of the city's public housing communities. Yet ten years later these same leaders became actively involved in a planning effort to privatize and downsize their community—an effort that would drastically reduce the number of affordable apartments. What happened? John Arena—a longtime community and labor activist in New Orleans—explores this drastic change in Driven from New Orleans, exposing the social disaster visited on the city's black urban poor long before the natural disaster of Katrina magnified their plight. Arena argues that the key to understanding New Orleans's public housing transformation from public to private is the co-optation of grassroots activists into a government and foundation-funded nonprofit complex. He shows how the nonprofit model created new political allegiances and financial benefits for activists, moving them into a strategy of insider negotiations that put the profit-making agenda of real estate interests above the material needs of black public housing residents. In their turn, white developers and the city's black political elite embraced this newfound political “realism” because it legitimized the regressive policies of removing poor people and massively downsizing public housing, all in the guise of creating a new racially integrated, “mixed-income” community. In tracing how this shift occurred, Driven from New Orleans reveals the true nature, and the true cost, of reforms promoted by an alliance of a neoliberal government, nonprofits, community activists, and powerful real estate interests.

Book And the Criminals with Him

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972, Will Campbell published an issue of the Committee of Southern Churchmen's journal, Katallagete, to shed light on the US prison system. None could anticipate how the system would expand exponentially in the next four decades. Today, the US operates the world's largest prison system, incarcerating nearly 1 in every 100 American adults. How did this expansion happen? What is the human toll of this retributive system? How might "ambassadors of reconciliation" respond to such a punitive institution? Replicating the firsthand nature of Will Campbell's original Katallagete collection, twenty new essays pull back the veil on today's prison-industrial complex. The plea throughout this collection is not for some better, more progressive institution to exact justice. Rather, the invitation is to hear from voices of experience how the system functions, listen to what the institution does to those locked in its cells, consider what an execution involves, and, most importantly, contemplate the scandalous call to be in reconciled community with those whom society discards and the system silences. Our story is that there are neither good nor bad people, neither felon nor free world. We are all one.

Book God is Subversive

Download or read book God is Subversive written by Lee Griffith and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Lee Griffith, being a peacemaker means much more than sporting PEACE T-shirts or voting for left-wing political candidates. Peacemaking is for him a daily practice of community formation, lifestyle decisions, and prayer ordinary living that is faithful to the gospel and happily out of sync with most of the world most of the time and it is a vital part of following Jesus Christ. In these challenging talks, Griffith a veteran anti-war activist who has been arrested many times for his pro-peace demonstrations sets forth a solidly biblical argument for uncompromising nonviolence. Along the way, he describes encounters with dumpster divers and prostitutes, with bag ladies and judges, with people who hear voices and see ghosts and he shares how, through these encounters and more, he has come to know better the subversive God of the gospel.
