Download or read book Being Alongside written by Alf Coles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you establish a classroom culture in which students routinely conjecture and think mathematically? How do you establish a way of working with teachers, using video, in which discussion supports professional development? The present book offers answers to these questions through an in depth (enactivist) study of one exceptional teacher in one innovative mathematics department in the UK. The book reveals some striking parallels between working to support students’ mathematical thinking and working to support teacher learning. A case is made for the importance of metacommunication in both contexts - communication about the communications that are occurring. For example, there is compelling evidence from a classroom that metacommunication, linked to the words ‘conjecture’ and ‘becoming a mathematician’, supports student metacognition and mathematical thinking. In working with teachers or students, offering these powerful metacommunications seems to require a heightened listening. With a heightened listening, attention is placed not just in what is said, but in what kind of a thing is said, with the teacher or facilitator being alongside the individuals in the wider group. "Read this book if you’re a teacher for insights into how one teacher establishes a classroom culture where her children are doing mathematics, ‘being mathematicians’ and reflect on what you want in your own classroom. Read this book if you’re a teacher educator to reflect on parallels between teaching and running professional development sessions, particularly using video. If you do not fit in either of these categories, read this book and use stories in your life." - Laurinda Brown, University of Bristol.

Book excerpt: Lying in a Hong Kong dockyard, the HMS Wagtail awaits her last summons to the breakers' yard. Commander Justin Rolfe is also seemingly at the end of his useful naval life, an embittered man, brooding and angry from a court-martial verdict. Then, the offshore island of Santu is threatened with invasion from the Chinese mainland. The small British community must be brought out, and Commander Rolfe and the Wagtail are ordered to the island. The job is regarded with sullen resentment by his crew, but to Rolfe, and even the ship, it is a job that offers the chance of a reprieve and a restoration of self-respect. ______________________________ A thrilling tale of naval warfare from Douglas Reeman, the all-time bestselling master of naval fiction, who served with the Royal Navy on convoy duty in the Atlantic, the Arctic and the North Sea. He has written dozens of naval books under his own name and the pseudonym Alexander Kent, including the famous Richard Bolitho books set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Download or read book McQuaid in August written by Shepard Rifkin and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detective Damian McQuaid, of New York’s First Homicide Squad, decides to help a woman who has been receiving obscene phone calls. Such petty squeals are none of McQuaid’s business, but when, as he leaves for the day, he overhears an attractive woman talking to a precinct detective, he volunteers to help her. Unofficially, of course: he knows just what interpretation his buddies in homicide would put on that if they find out. Because she is terrified of being alone, he spends the night on Iris’s sofa, but when he wakes the next morning, he finds that she has been murdered in her bedroom while he slept. Shocked and angry, he decides to investigate on his own time—again, very unofficially; again, for very obvious reasons—and his inquiries lead him to begin a clever, insidious, and dangerous program of harassment in an effort to expose the man McQuaid believes to be the killer. All very unofficially, because McQuaid doesn’t have a single clue that would convict his suspect.

Download or read book Say Hello to Jupiter written by Boris Bouquerel and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-10-09 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever wondered what our great-great-grandchildren will think of us as they survey the wreckage? Will they realize that their broken inheritance was no accident, but a scheduled apocalypse we had seen coming a long way off, in great scientific detail and full Dolby Technicolor Sensurround? As if our generation had taken some perverse pleasure wallowing in scary-scary, frowning with concern at the litany of extinct species and vanishing forests, wringing our hands in helpless sympathy as faraway, starving children stared out of our TV sets accusingly Gasping at last in horrified excitement when the second plane hit the second tower as soon as the focus was adjusted. Like fingering a decaying tooth, enjoying the painful tingle, knowing all too well that the longer we wait and do nothing, other than devise complex methods of denial, the closer we get to that apocalyptic bogeyman all you prime-time warriors have been expecting. Sound familiar? Then this book is for you. Says the author, 41st-century starship singer BB Boris: Where I come from, telecommunications are telepathy, people do not build their houses but grow them, and the pursuit of power is no more than a distasteful game fit only for unruly children. Alas, a doomed mission to your infernal era has trapped me here among you primitive hypocrites. Although BB pulls no punches when describing our suicidal century, what he has to say is surprisingly optimistic, and after reading his unique memoirs you will find yourself strangely uplifted, rediscovering a sense of faith and hope you thought was lost forever. Indeed, this tale is not about doom and gloom. It is about faith. Believe it or not, two thousand years from now we will have come a long, long way. Welcome to the Imperial Federation of Jupiter, a space-faring utopia where problems still exist, for this is not Neverland, but where we have at least succeeded in overcoming the depressingly childish conundrums of our tragic infancy. How was this possible? After playing around in the technology sandbox for a century or so, our species suddenly had to learn some very hard lessons in the ensuing trauma. As a result, and despite all the odds stacked against us, we were able to rediscover the wisdom of our early ancestors. Thus the multiple wonders present in the Federation are a blend of quantum physics, spiritual energy and shamanic magic. One of your descendants is living there. He has a job as a starship vocalist, a highly trained specialist responsible for the safety of passengers. He is living a life of contentment with his mate, but their loving bliss is suddenly shattered by affairs of state. Eventually an exceptional spate of circumstances results in his leaving the forty-first century and he ends up trapped in our infernal age. But this is not really about the future. Although much of the action takes place in 2021 and in 4077, this is a highly contemporary novel. It is in a way the story of a hapless rock singer at odds with the nauseating values permeating the last days of our species on its once-beautiful cradle planet. As he tries hard to make the best of his exile, racked by loneliness, plagued by half memories of his utopian home in the future, he is nevertheless driven by his first-hand awareness that Humankind has everything to look forward to, if only after the looming, terrible catharsis he knows is coming. Like a spaced-out Forrest Gump, this peculiar intelligence gives him a unique perspective on the events of the last three decades. Like Kane, the Shaolin priest of the Kung-Fu series, his purity of spirit provides him with a disarming, almost magical advantage when confronted with the simian brutes that dominate our troubled era. Even as his memories fade with time, to the point where he begins to doubt they ever happened, the protagonist

Download or read book Belligerent Broadcasting written by Michael Higgins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is rudeness such a prominent feature of contemporary broadcasting? If broadcasting is about the enactment of sociability, then how can we account for the fact that broadcasting has become a sphere of anger, humiliation, anger, dispute and upset? And to what extent does belligerence in broadcasting reflect broader social and cultural developments? This book reflects upon and analyses the development of 'belligerent broadcasting' beginning with an examination of belligerence in its historical context and as an aspect of wider cultural concerns surrounding the retreat of civility. With attention to the various relations of power expressed in the various forms of belligerent conduct across a range of media genres, the authors explore its manifestation in political interviews, in the form of 'confrontation' in talk shows, in makeover television, as an 'authentic' means of proffering opinion and as a form of sociability or banter. Richly illustrated with studies and examples of well-known shows from both sides of the Atlantic, including The Apprentice, The Fixer, American Idol, Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, DIY SOS, The Jeremy Kyle Show and Dragon's Den, this book reflects on the consequences and potentialities of belligerence in the media and public sphere. It will appeal to scholars and students of cultural and media studies, communication and popular culture.
