Book excerpt: Staging Buenos Aires centers theater as a source of historical inquiry to understand how nonelites experienced and shaped a city undergoing dramatic transformations. Commercial theater constituted the core of the city’s public sphere, one in which middle-class playwrights and audiences assumed the leading role. Audiences and critics often disagreed about what was “acceptable” entertainment. Playwrights used theater to promote their own ideas of sociopolitical change, creating a space for working- and middle-class audiences to identify and push back against imposed regulations and attitudes. Cultural production on the city’s stages revealed fissures and social anxieties about the expansion of the political system and of the public sphere as women became increasingly visible in urban spaces. At the same time, theater also gave structure and meaning to these rapid changes, providing the space for the city’s playwrights and complex publics to play a key role in identifying, processing, and shaping the transforming nation. Plays helped audience members work through dramatic shifts in societal norms as urbanization and industrialization resulted in the visible decline of patriarchal social structures, made most visible in the urban sphere.

I fantasized about dancing tango in the arms of a sexy Latin lover at the end of the world with nothing to think about but my next tango step. I chose safer places to visit, and Argentina stayed on my bucket list. One fine day, I ran out of excuses. I owned a small finca in Alhaurín el Grande near Malaga, Spain and it needed painting. My good friend Brian said to me, ‘You buy the beers amigo, and I will help you paint your casita (house), and we can have some fun doing it.’ It was an offer too good to turn down as I knew Brian was a genius with a paintbrush. We had the best of times painting and bonding, drinking lots of beer and talking nonsense about life. On the second or third day, Brian threw a question at me: ‘What do you think about doing that you have never done before?’ ‘Umm,’ I replied, ‘let me think about that one. Pass me another beer.’ It didn't take me long to say that I always had a desire to visit South America and in particular, Argentina. Little did I know that answering Brian's question would change my life forever. Brian listened to my tales of why I wanted to go to Argentina, and then he knocked me over with a feather! He proceeded to tell me that he had just completed a documentary on the Argentinian footballer, Ossie Ardiles. Brian told me that Ossie had told him that if you want to see what real passion is, you need to see a football match in Argentina. Win or lose, hate it or love it, Ossie said, the passion in Argentinian football is the best and the most 'loco' in the world. Amazingly, about eight weeks after our painting break, we were on a plane bound for Argentina. Right in the heart of El Salvador’s capital San Salvador, anthropologist Juan José Martínez d´Aubuisson observes firsthand an escalating cycle of brutality between MS-13 and its sworn enemies from Barrio 18 as it becomes a war fought on a professional scale with grenades and machine guns. For the better part of a year, d´Aubuisson was embedded in one of the cells of MS-13, where he learned its moral codes, rules, legends, and contradictions. His journey into the heart of the gang is guided by an enigmatic character, Destino, a veteran leader of MS-13. After many conversations with Destino, a strange kind of friendship emerges between the two, and the anthropologist understands not only the origin of the gang and its war with Barrio 18 but the deep-seated reasons for the regional violence. The book culminates in one of the most violent acts ever in an area that has seen more than its share: a full-scale attack on a public bus with thirty-two passengers on board. Fourteen people were killed and twenty-eight wounded. Almost all the principal characters in this book end up dying: some are killed in the war, while others fall to the state security forces. Those that do escape the war are imprisoned, exiled or murdered by their own gang. This is a true testimony of life inside a wild gang, in a neighborhood governed by abandoned boys.
