Book excerpt: To examine the precise fulfillment of prophecy is to appreciate the awesomeness of God, and to acknowledge that...[he] has shown his omniscience in the past by a multitude of fulfilled prophecies... gives assurance that all of the prophecies still to be fulfilled will take place precisely as foretold. In One Minute to Midnight on God's Clock, Dr. Henderson Ward takes readers through an in-depth and detailed analysis of the faithfulness and wonders that God has and will exhibit to believers in the days to come. Embarking into the difficult territory of the book of Revelation, Henderson's ability to bring logical insight to God's mysteries allows today's reader to see the intricacy and detail to which God has attested in his Word. Henderson takes readers from the first principles of humanity's origin, philosophies on the nature of the universe, and the spiritual aspect of mankind, to the wisdom of God and his immovable promises of the future that he has revealed in the Bible. Readers will receive a deeper understanding of the church's purpose, and will more clearly see the road to the blessed hope, Christ's return. Book excerpt: In October 1962, at the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of nuclear conflict over the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba. In this hour-by-hour chronicle of those tense days, veteran Washington Post reporter Michael Dobbs reveals just how close we came to Armageddon. Here, for the first time, are gripping accounts of Khrushchev's plan to destroy the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo; the handling of Soviet nuclear warheads on Cuba; and the extraordinary story of a U-2 spy plane that got lost over Russia at the peak of the crisis. These apocalyptic beliefs are often associated with radicalized politics and what we would today often describe as “populist” movements and leaders. What are the roots of such beliefs? How have they developed over time? In what ways do they impact the modern world? In a series of case studies—ranging over different faiths, time periods, and global locations—this book explores how and why these beliefs have become so often the driver of radicalized politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to answer the big questions. Inevitably, the spiritual journey of the author is explored by way of answering these seemingly imponderable questions, which are: What is the secret of life? Who is God? Who are you? What happens at physical death? Where is (heaven) God? Why are there endless wars and conflicts? How do we reconcile scientific fact with the above questions in the twenty-first century? There is enough to be going on with, I am sure you will agree. The author is, therefore, defined by the reasoning behind the conclusions he has reached, which is the substance of this book. So enjoy the read.

Book Prophets beyond Activism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia M. O'Brien
  • Publisher : Presbyterian Publishing Corp
  • Release : 2024-08-27
  • ISBN : 164698398X
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Prophets beyond Activism written by Julia M. O'Brien and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets beyond Activism insightfully challenges the common progressive narrative that the prophets of ancient Israel were primarily concerned with social justice. Instead it daringly offers more life-giving ways of engaging the prophetic books for the causes of justice. The assumption that the prophets of ancient Israel were primarily concerned with social justice so permeates the thinking and the discourse of progressive Christianity that it might be considered an interpretive orthodoxy. For example, progressives characterize prophets as those who speak truth to power and “prophetic preaching” as social critique. Yet, they often do so without explanation or consideration of alternative views. In this volume, Julia O’Brien challenges the notion that the prophets were solely concerned with the same issues as contemporary social justice movements. Reading prophetic texts with an eye to their historical dimensions—when they were written, how they were edited—complicates any definitive statement about the role of prophets in the past. Reading alongside readers from diverse racial, gender, and other social locations in the present raises hard questions about whose justice these books actually promote. Despite its self-presentation as a scholarly and scientific viewpoint, the “prophets as social activists” orthodoxy was constructed in a particular time and place and in its usage today perpetuates many of the problematic ideologies of its origins. In response to these concerns, O’Brien offers alternative readings of the prophets for the sake of justice. Chapters explore the value of Amos and Micah for contemporary economic ethics; the dynamics of inclusivity and exclusivity in Isaiah; opportunities for reading Jeremiah as the voice of a community rather than a solitary figure; and the limits of Second Isaiah’s creation theology for addressing the climate crisis. This is a wide-ranging volume, interweaving careful readings of biblical texts within their literary and historical contexts, the history of prophetic interpretation, and attentiveness to feminist, womanist, and postcolonial voices, including engagement with contemporary thought such as trauma theory and intersectional analysis of the climate crisis. Prophets beyond Activism calls readers to a more honest and humbler activism, speaking in their own voices about the demands and possibilities of justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doomsday Clock is declaring a warning to this world. Whether or not people are listening is irrelevant; the clock is ticking. There is a spiritual doomsday clock ticking away as well. It is a countdown to spiritual catastrophe, as well as spiritual accountability. Mankind has plummeted into deep darkness in their morality, leaving a gaping hole between them and the Living God--that, my friend, spells catastrophe. Then, on the other hand, the clock is ticking to a judgment that every man, every woman, the rich and the poor alike, will have to attend. That spells accountability. In 3 Minutes to Midnight, Pastor Chuck Salvo endeavors to rebuild the walls of biblical truth by destroying the anti-biblical world views of our day. A spiritual catastrophe is upon us, and the doctrines of devils have permeated our culture. While the clock continues to tick, you and I can be prepared by holding true to biblical doctrine and not be swayed by the breath of a wicked system. The doctrines of devils have filled the atmosphere, and many fall to their wicked deceptions. But those who are submitted to God's spirit will recognize those doctrines as being nothing but bad breath.

Download or read book Remember God written by Annie F. Downs and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I know God is loving; I know He is good; I believe He is big and powerful. But sometimes I wonder if He is really kind— really deeply always kind. Is He? Christians love to talk about how God is in control, but that’s harder to grasp when things aren’t going like you thought they would, when your life looks quite different than you imagined. For centuries, God’s people have been building altars to Him—to remind themselves and the people around them of His work. His goodness. His kindness. Stacks of stones. Altars. Temples. Cathedrals. Why? Because they believed God and wanted to remember Him. In the back of my mind, God reminds me that He is the same trustworthy God—the One who always finishes the stories he starts. And this is my story—of wrestling with our God who gives a limp and a blessing. A God who is always kind even when my circumstances feel the opposite. God is who He says He is. He is kinder than you imagine. In a world where it is easy to forget who He is, we will not. We will remember God.
