Book One Lord Two Hands

Download or read book One Lord Two Hands written by Matthew C. Harrison and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays serves as a sourcebook of significant writings on the reception and use of the theology of the two kingdoms. The Lutheran teaching of the two kingdoms, in one way or another, touches on every article of faith from creation to eschatology. It is critical to vocation, as the Christian navigates life as a citizen of this world while simultaneously a citizen of the heavenly kingdom through faith in Christ Jesus. Without the distinction between the two kingdoms, faith is misplaced, and the neighbor is deprived of the love owed him or her. Pastors, church leaders, teachers, and theology students will find in these essays a respect for Luther's confession of God's two kingdoms and a desire to see it fruitfully utilized in addressing the issues we now encounter in the world"--

Book excerpt: It comes as a surprise to many Christians that for many decades the dominant concern of the ancient church was the Trinity. Recent years have seen a revival of interest in this idea, but almost nobody has seen that in his approach to humanity, God has provided a pattern for his people to emulate. We should act in a way patterned on what he did in sending his Son and Spirit, "God's two hands". Then the Trinity also provides an ideal pattern for humanity to aim at. The book discusses the theoretical background for this approach, and gives several examples of how this works out in practice, such as the marriage relationship and the problems of poverty and the environment. An appendix outlines the reasons for belief in the Trinity, and sketches the development of the doctrine in Christian history.

These various books collected here are presented to make it easier not only to read the truth as was needed back in the early church but also the arguments set forth by Cyril so that we can learn from the past and not fall into the same schools of false teaching today.

Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Is it better to go with traditional or contemporary models? Christians may find themselves asking how early believers worshiped and whether they can provide insight into how we should praise God today. Rooted in historical models and patristic church studies, Ancient-Future Worship examines how early Christian worship models can be applied to the postmodern church. Book The Bad Lands

    Book Details:
  • Author : Oakley Hall
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-10-10
  • ISBN : 022641275X

Download or read book The Bad Lands written by Oakley Hall and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Warlock comes “an elegiac, incandescent 1880s Dakota badlands Western that bears comparison to the greats” (Kirkus). It’s 1883 in Johnson County, in the old Dakota Territory—a rugged, wide-open landscape of rolling red earth, prairie, and cattle as far as the eye can see. But the land is closing, the “Beef Bonanza” is ending, and the free-range cattlemen are stuck watching their way of life disappear in a blaze of drought and gunfire. An action-packed western from one of the masters of the genre, Oakley Hall’s The Bad Lands blends roundups and rustlers, whorehouses and land grabs, shoot-outs and the threat of hangings in a tale of the war between the cowboys and the cattle barons. But more than this, it is an elegy to the wild beauty of the badlands before the ranchers moved in, chased off the free-rangers, the trappers, and the tribes, and fenced it all in. “Readers unable to suppress an unfashionable yearning for a good story will be delighted with The Bad Lands.”—Larry McMurtry, The New York Times

Book Understanding Latino History

Download or read book Understanding Latino History written by Pablo R. Mitchell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Latino history textbook is an outstanding reference source that covers many different Latino groups within a single comprehensive narrative. Latinos make up a vibrant, expanding, and extremely diverse population with a history of being in the Americas that dates back to the early 16th century. Today, Latinos represent the largest ethnic minority group in the United States, yet the history of Latinos is largely unknown to the wider nation. This book tells the larger "story" of Latinos in the United States and describes how they represent a breadth of ethnicities, addressing not only those in very large numbers from countries such as Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador, but also Latino people from Peru, Argentina, Venezuela, Panama, and Costa Rica, as well as indigenous Oaxacans and Mixtecos, among others. Organized chronologically, the book's coverage begins with the arrival of the Spanish in the Americas around 1500 and stretches to the present. Each chapter discusses a particular time period and addresses multiple Latino groups in the United States together in the same narrative. The text is supplemented with interesting sidebars that spotlight topics such as Latino sports figures, authentic recipes, and Latino actors and pop stars. These sidebars help to engage readers and assist them in better understanding the wide range of "the Latino American experience" in the modern context.

Book The Lord is the Spirit

Download or read book The Lord is the Spirit written by Andrew K. Gabriel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Lord is the Spirit" (2 Cor 3:17) . . . and yet one might be excused for thinking otherwise when reading studies on God's attributes--omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, immutability, impassibility, and the like. Although Christians throughout the ages have defended the deity of the Holy Spirit, theologians have not adequately taken the doctrine of the Holy Spirit into account when formulating a theology of the divine attributes. The resulting understandings of God fall short of being fully Trinitarian. Gabriel builds on contemporary Trinitarian theology by advocating for the integration of insights from pneumatology into the doctrine of God's attributes. Three case studies are presented: impassibility, immutability, and omnipotence. Gabriel writes from an evangelical and Pentecostal vantage point as he engages in ecumenical dialogue with a wide spectrum of historical and contemporary theological voices.
