Book Henri IV of France

Download or read book Henri IV of France written by Vincent J. Pitts and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-01-05 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent J. Pitts chronicles the life and times of one of France’s most remarkable kings in the first English-language biography of Henri IV to be published in twenty-five years. An unwelcome heir to the throne, Henri ruled over a kingdom plagued by religious civil war and political and economic instability. By the end of his reign in 1610 he had pacified his warring country, restored its prosperity, and reclaimed France’s place as a leading power in Europe. Pitts draws upon the rich scholarship of recent decades to tell the captivating story of this pivotal French king. From boyhood, Henri was destined to be leader and protector of the Huguenot movement in France. He served as chief of the Calvinist party and fought for the Huguenot forces in the bloody Wars of Religion before an extraordinary sequence of dynastic mishaps left the Protestant warlord next in line for the French crown. Henri was forced to renounce his faith in support of his claim to the Catholic throne and to unite his deeply divided country. A master of political maneuvering, Henri restored order to a country in the throes of great religious, political, and economic upheaval. He was assassinated in 1610 by a Catholic zealot. Vincent Pitts expertly recounts this history and skillfully untangles its complex set of personalities and events. Pitts engages the vast amount of literature relating to the king himself as well as the large body of recent scholarship on France during this time. The result is a fascinating biography of a French king and a comprehensive history of sixteenth-century France.

Book Byron Napoleon J C Hobhouse and the Hundred Days

Download or read book Byron Napoleon J C Hobhouse and the Hundred Days written by Peter Cochran and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon was, after his defeat at Leipzig, “granted” the island of Elba to rule. He soon found this unsatisfactory, and, early in 1815, left for the south of France, and marched on Paris to some acclamation. He was, all too quickly, defeated at Waterloo. Observing all this was Byron’s friend J.C. Hobhouse, an ardent Bonapartist. Byron, who posed as one, never answered his letters from the thick of things in Paris. This book is structured in four layers, and begins with an essay about Byron and Napoleon, which is then followed by Byron’s poems about Napoleon and Hobhouse’s diary. Hobhouse’s letters conclude the volume. Most of Hobhouse’s diary has never been published. The book is published, aptly, on the bicentenary of The Hundred Days.

Book Royal Palaces and Parks of France

Download or read book Royal Palaces and Parks of France written by Milburg F Mansfield and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern traveller sees something beyond mere facts. Historical material as identified with the life of some great architectural glory is something more than a mere repetition of chronologies; the sidelights and the co-related incidents, though indeed many of them may be but hearsay, are quite as interesting, quite as necessary, in fact, for the proper appreciation of a famous palace or chateau as long columns of dates, or an evolved genealogical tree which attempts to make plain that which could be better left unexplained. The glamour of history would be considerably dimmed if everything was explained, and a very seamy block of marble may be chiselled into a very acceptable statue if the workman but knows how to avoid the doubtful parts. An itinerary that follows not only the ridges, but occasionally plunges down into the hollows and turns up or down such crossroads as may have chanced to look inviting, is perhaps more interesting than one laid out on conventional lines. A shadowy something, which for a better name may be called sentiment, if given full play encourages these side-steps, and since they are generally found fruitful, and often not too fatiguing, the procedure should be given every encouragement.
