Book A Social History of Swimming in England 1800 1918

Download or read book A Social History of Swimming in England 1800 1918 written by Christopher Love and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a time of great social and technological change, this history traces the development of the four classic aquatic disciplines of competitive swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo, with its main focus on racing. Working from the beginnings of municipal recreational swimming, the book fully explores the links between swimming and other aspects of English life society including class, education, gender, municipal governance, sexuality and the Victorian invention of the sports amateur-professional divide. Uniquely focused on swimming -often neglected in analytic sports histories- this is the first study of its kind and will be an important landmark in the establishment of swimming history as a topic of scholarly investigation. This book was previously published as a special issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport.

Book excerpt: For over 12,000 years human beings have warred, slaughtering each other with persistence and brutality. From spear point to thermonuclear ordnance, human ingenuity has had a serious downside. In the 20th century alone, wars claimed more than 90 million lives. Yet war's origins, meaning, and evolution over the millennium remain to this day a mystery. Why is warfare "almost" as old as man himself? How is it that a creature capable of producing great art, architecture, literature, medicine, and wondrous acts of compassion is simultaneously capable of such cruel and wanton slaughter? To answer these and other questions, this thoughtful study journeys across time and disciplines to examine and sensibly explain human warfare, clarify its source and driving energy, and thoughtfully develop the prospect of a true and lasting peace.

Book That St Louis Thing Vol 1 An American Story of Roots Rhythm and Race

Download or read book That St Louis Thing Vol 1 An American Story of Roots Rhythm and Race written by Bruce R. Olson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That St. Louis Thing is an American story of music, race relations and baseball. Here is over 100 years of the city's famed musical development -- blues, jazz and rock -- placed in the context of its civil rights movement and its political and ecomomic power. Here, too, are the city's people brought alive from its foundation to the racial conflicts in Ferguson in 2014. The panorama of the city presents an often overlooked gem, music that goes far beyond famed artists such as Scott Joplin, Miles Davis and Tina Turner. The city is also the scene of a historic civil rights movement that remained important from its early beginnings into the twenty-first century. And here, too, are the sounds of the crack of the bat during a century-long love affair with baseball.

Book excerpt: The first full-length book devoted to Japan's 1994 Nobel Laureate, The Marginal World of Kenzaburo Ôe introduces the literary universe bursting with the explosive energies of Bakhtinian grotesque realism. In its center stands the "idiot son," a trickster and soulful healer, unknowingly thrown into the world of myth-making and history. The diverse voices of Ôe's characters resonate with one another within and between reinvented texts as the book's analysis flow into the very pores and veins of his masterful writing.

Book The Battle of Carthage Missouri

Download or read book The Battle of Carthage Missouri written by Kenneth E. Burchett and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Carthage, Missouri, was the first full-scale land battle of the Civil War. Governor Claiborne Jackson's rebel Missouri State Guard made its way toward southwest Missouri near where Confederate volunteers collected in Arkansas, while Colonel Franz Sigel's Union force occupied Springfield with orders to intercept and block the rebels from reaching the Confederates. The two armies collided near Carthage on July 5, 1861. The battle lasted for ten hours, spread over several miles, and included six separate engagements before the Union army withdrew under the cover of darkness. The New York Times called it "the first serious conflict between the United States troops and the rebels." This book describes the events leading up to the battle, the battle itself, and the aftermath.

The history answers questions about the beginning of traditions and describes changes that have taken place over the past 150 years. It tells the story of a church established in 1860 by German immigrants who came to a new country and settled in Wisconsin shortly after it became a state. These settlers in the Beaver Dam area brought skills and talents important to the development of a new land. As the history of the church reveals there is a long tradition of keeping pace with the needs on the local scene as well as reaching out beyond its doors.
