The work, it is hoped, will he of permanent value, being written not as a financial venture, hut rather as a gratuitous contribution to local history." In how far the author has fulfilled his mission, after a year of search and research among more than five thousand pages of time-worn records of other days, is for the intelligent, sympathetic reader to determine.
