Book excerpt: This is the first in the series of three books I plan to do on the ten principal Upanishads. This book carries the eight of them. The second one would carry the Chandogya Upanishad and the third, the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad. The eight Upanishads this work carries are Isha, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittariya, and Aitareya. Hymn- by- hymn translation followed by explanatory comments mark this work. This is meant for the non-specialist reader. Because this is meant to serve as an introduction into the Upanishads. The word Upanishad means 'to sit close by'. Sri Sankara, the 8th cy saint, interprets it as 'that which destroys ignorance'. They were written in Sanskrit, that belongs to the family of Indo-European languages. The Upanishads are some of the most esoteric and mystical works of all time. They are a call from the long, dark tunnel of time. They stand apart as much in their lonesomeness, as in their robustness. At times they are as abstract and dense in their other-worldliness as enticing in their subtle, tender connect with this world. They are roughly from two thousand to three thousand years ago. their count varies. The Indian theological tradition places it at 108, but the important ones number less than twenty and the most important of them just ten. They form the concluding parts of the four Vedas viz Rg, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva. The word veda means wisdom. The vedas are considered as literature revealed from sources divine. They are believed to be the utterances of the great sages of the past with illumined vision. They were supposed to have been heard directly from divine sources by the sages and subsequently passed down the generations by word of mouth, until they were written down about a little more than thousand years ago. The central concern of the Upanishads was to find the connection between the cosmic reality and the human person. This knowledge is usually hidden from the people, but it constitutes knowledge that would deliver one from mortal existence. Their chief concern is with the spirit that dwells within beings. Not easily understood by logical reasoning, they need to be understood through personal spiritual experience. In ancient times, the transfer of this knowledge to all and sundry were strictly prohibited. Only a qualified master could impart it, that too to a student selected after long observation, careful scrutiny, and stiff testing. These works mark the departure from the rigid ritualism of the Vedas into a more open , inclusive, and flexible philosophy. The religions that emerged in India not long after the early Upanishads borrowed heavily from the new concepts that marked the Upanishads. The Upanishads helped subsequent generations to formulate their views on the secrets of human existence. Either by themselves or through religions like Buddhism , they influenced the cultural lives of nations outside India's borders such as Sri Lanka, Japan, China, Korea etc. Indian thought had constantly turned to these works for rejuvenation in times of cultural and religious stagnation.

Book I Am That Talks on the Isa Upanishad

Download or read book I Am That Talks on the Isa Upanishad written by OSHO and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osho goes into the depths of life’s eternal questions while speaking on the sutras of the Isa Upanishad—the most ancient words of wisdom available to mankind. For over 35 years, Osho spoke to international audiences of seekers, addressing their essential questions and concerns. The international press calls him “A 21st Century Prophet” and “an oracle of modern times.” His books and audio lectures are international bestsellers. Osho himself says that he is neither a prophet nor a philosopher; he is simply sharing his own experience. The Sunday Times of London described him as “one of the 1000 makers of the 20th century” and American author Tom Robbins has called him “the most dangerous man since Jesus Christ”—both comments reflecting the profound influence of his revolutionary approach to the science of inner transformation. Spoken with authority, clarity, sharpness and humor, his insights address both the timeless and timely concerns that tend to escape our notice in the clamor and overload of daily life.

Book The Oneness of the Eastern Heart and the Western Mind

Download or read book The Oneness of the Eastern Heart and the Western Mind written by Sri Chinmoy and published by Aum Publications. This book was released on 2014-03-22 with total page 1706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic collection of all of Sri Chinmoy’s university lectures in eBook form has been released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sri Chinmoy’s arrival in the West on 13 April 1964. Sri Chinmoy’s very first university lecture was given at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, on 10 January 1968. It was entitled “Spirituality: What It Is and What It Is Not.” This inaugurated a whole era of talks which saw Sri Chinmoy travelling ceaselessly across the length and breadth of America and around the world to address the youth of each country. He would spend countless hours travelling by car or train to reach far- flung universities, sometimes visiting two or even three in the course of a single day. After many of these sublimely inspiring discourses, he would answer questions from the audience or spend time instructing sincere seekers in the age-old practices of concentration, meditation and contemplation. By the mid-seventies, Sri Chinmoy had spoken volumes and he began to include longer and longer periods of silent meditation in his lectures. Then, in 1984, in a significant departure from the spoken word, he introduced the theme of Peace Concerts. At these concerts, Sri Chinmoy would play his own soulful and devotional compositions on a variety of instruments of both Eastern and Western origin, meditating between each instrument and sometimes giving aphorisms on peace and related themes. In 2003 yet another form of Sri Chinmoy’s self-offering unfolded when he travelled to a number of universities to honour distinguished professors for their significant contributions to the betterment of humanity by physically lifting them overhead. This remarkable endeavour was part of his “Lifting Up the World With a Oneness-Heart” award programme. Thus, through words, silence, music and a combination of physical and spiritual upliftment, Sri Chinmoy has shared his profound spiritual message with the aspiring Truth- seekers and God-lovers of the university-world for four decades. Sri Chinmoy’s words are mantras for the modern age, reverberating in our hearts with their timeless and truly life-transforming wisdom. In his exquisite prose, which is suffused with the very breath and cadence of poetry, Sri Chinmoy has revealed all the many stages of the seeker’s journey towards the Golden Shores of the ever-transcending Beyond. For generations to come these three volumes will awaken the inner mounting cry of seekers everywhere to achieve the highest Goal of Yoga—union with God—in this life.
