Green provide a series of provocative essays reflecting innovative, original research on professional and commercial interests in the nineteenth-century South, a place often seen as being composed of just two classes -- planters and slaves. Rather, an active middle class, made up of men and women devoted to the cultural and economic modernization of Dixie, worked with each other -- and occasionally their northern counterparts -- to bring reforms to the region. With a balance of established and younger authors, of antebellum and postbellum analyses, and of narrative and quantitative methodologies, these essays offer new ways to think about politics, society, gender, and culture during this exciting era of southern history. The contributors show that many like-minded southerners sought to create a "New South" with a society similar to that of the North. They supported the creation of public schools and an end to dueling, but less progressive reform was also endorsed, such as building factories using slave labor rather than white wage earners. The Southern Middle Class in the Long Nineteenth Century significantly influences thought on the social structure of the South, the centrality of class in history, and the events prior to and after the Civil War.

Book excerpt: From its settlement in the late 1700s, the Black Patch-an agricultural region of western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee-has been known for its dark-fired, heavy-leafed tobacco, so green that it is called "black." But as the settlers of this region sowed the seeds of tobacco, they also sowed the seeds of violence. In Violence in the Black Patch of Kentucky and Tennessee, Suzanne Marshall provides a thorough, engrossing depiction of the role played by violence in the development of the Black Patch culture. Violence was a key element in the white settlement of this frontier wilderness. After forcibly removing Native Americans from the region, white settlers established a tradition of violence that maintained order and morality. White male dominance over family members and black slaves was also sustained by violence. A man's mean reputation defined his identity and place within the community, instilling respect and fear among outsiders. The Civil War and the industrial revolution also helped perpetuate violence in the Black Patch. With markedly divided sympathies during the Civil War, the Black Patch inspired guerrilla warfare against citizens and slaves by renegade bands of former soldiers from both sides. Marshall's study culminates with a discussion of the Night Riders' vigilante activity during Black Patch wars that originated with this country's shift from an agricultural society to an industrial one. By focusing on the violence in this culture, Marshall provides a key to understanding both the cultural components that were unique to the area and those that were shared with other isolated rural communities. She draws extensively from oral history and ethnographic methodology as well as court records, church records, diaries, and newspapers. Anecdotes depicting folk beliefs and heroes, old-time religion, the economics of farm life, race relations, and gender roles, serve to enliven this study and enrich our understanding of a fascinating and distinctive region.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Emporia and Lyon County: Historical Incidents of the First Quarter of a Century, 1857 to 1882 The Annals presents pictures of ex-Senator Preston B. Plumb and of the home of his family. The latter building was completed after the Senator's death, and in it dwells the family, except young Preston, who is temporarily absent at school. Mr. Plumb's career in Kansas is so well known that there is little use for a historical writing here. He came here in 1857 and helped locate the town, and started its first newspaper, The Emporia News. He was intimately associated with the town as long as he lived. He had been reared in Ohio and learned the printer's trade. At the age of eighteen years he was one of the editors and proprietors of the Xenia (Ohio) News, and before he was twenty he had established his Emporia paper. When he was twenty-five he was a member of the Kansas house of representatives and chairman of its judiciary committee. He left the newspaper in 1859, and went to law school. Returning here in 1861, he opened a law office, after a brief trial at editorial work again. He had but just started fairly when he enlisted in the army, where he served over three years. Returning from the army, he again threw all his power and energy into the law practice, and the firm of Ruggles & Plumb had, in a remarkably short time, a practice excelled by only one firm in the state. He next became president of the Emporia National bank. At the sessions of the house of representatives in 1867 and 1865 he was again a member of that body, the first time as its speaker. In 1877 he was elected United States senator, and was re-elected in 1883 and in 1889. He made his best reputation as senator by his untiring devotion to the interests of his constituents. The death of no public man from Kansas was ever so generally and sincerely regretted and mourned as that of this citizen of Emporia. Mr. Plumb was a complete success in life in all his undertakings. He had great industry and power, and when necessary these were exerted to the fullest extent for the accomplishment of his objects, and he scarcely knew there was a word called "fail." Shambaugh Award Historian Sara Egge offers critical insights into the woman suffrage movement by exploring how it emerged in small Midwestern communities—in Clay County, Iowa; Lyon County, Minnesota; and Yankton County, South Dakota. Examining this grassroots activism offers a new approach that uncovers the sophisticated ways Midwestern suffragists understood citizenship as obligation. These suffragists, mostly Yankees who migrated from the Northeast after the Civil War, participated enthusiastically in settling the region and developing communal institutions such as libraries, schools, churches, and parks. Meanwhile, as Egge’s detailed local study also shows, the efforts of the National American Women’s Suffrage Association did not always succeed in promoting the movement’s goals. Instead, it gained support among Midwesterners only when local rural women claimed the right to vote on the basis of their well-established civic roles and public service.
