Book excerpt: The world has changed over the years. And most dont ever think about what it must have been like back in the days before cell phones and credit cards. Most can't even imagine what it was like to travel without them. That's what The Journey is all about! A motorcycle trip from Kentucky to Florida back before you had a cell phone to call for help if needed, or a pocket full of credit cards to help pay for it. A time when if it broke, you fixed it, or hoped for a not her rider to come by and help you fix it! A time when getting into a motel was almost impossible for a motorcycle rider, a time when you were not welcomed in most restaurants, and a time when police did not need a reason to stop you. The Journey is a story of a trip on a Harley Davidson motorcycle long before there were Harley shops in every town, and when even if you found one, chances of them helping you were not that good anyway. Today, Harley Davidson dealerships are a destination that every rider heads for, with their show rooms full of new Harley's and a shop with several mechanic's ready to repair any problem you might have out on the road. But back in the early 80's, it just wasn't that way. If you rode a Harley, and it broke, you fixed it yourself! The Journey is also about how we handled different situations that would happen when you were out on the road traveling. How years ago people would still help each other, and would go out of their way to give you a hand sometimes. And how meeting new friends out on the road would lead to a friendship that would l ast the rest of your life. Just like traveling today, luck plays a big part on any road trip. And the Journey is the story of a trip that luck played a big part in. Even with all the planning and going over your bike before a trip, things happen sometimes that you don't plan on. And how you handle those times, is what makes a trip an adventure. I starting writing The Journey as a way to remember how it use to be, and a way for my kids to know what their dad went thru years ago. Something to remember me by long after Im gone. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. I dedicate this story to the memory of all those friends who I met on the road who have passed a way over the years, and to those who are still with me. I've been n blessed all my life with more friends than I deserve. And to my wife, Sissy, who has stood by me for over 30 years. Without her, no ne of this would have been possible. Hooper

Book Walking to Listen

Download or read book Walking to Listen written by Andrew Forsthoefel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of one young man’s coming of age on a journey across America--told through the stories of the people of all ages, races, and inclinations he meets along the way. Life is fast, and I’ve found it’s easy to confuse the miraculous for the mundane, so I’m slowing down, way down, in order to give my full presence to the extraordinary that infuses each moment and resides in every one of us. At 23, Andrew Forsthoefel headed out the back door of his home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, with a backpack, an audio recorder, his copies of Whitman and Rilke, and a sign that read "Walking to Listen." He had just graduated from Middlebury College and was ready to begin his adult life, but he didn’t know how. So he decided to take a cross-country quest for guidance, one where everyone he met would be his guide. In the year that followed, he faced an Appalachian winter and a Mojave summer. He met beasts inside: fear, loneliness, doubt. But he also encountered incredible kindness from strangers. Thousands shared their stories with him, sometimes confiding their prejudices, too. Often he didn’t know how to respond. How to find unity in diversity? How to stay connected, even as fear works to tear us apart? He listened for answers to these questions, and to the existential questions every human must face, and began to find that the answer might be in listening itself. Ultimately, it’s the stories of others living all along the roads of America that carry this journey and sing out in a hopeful, heartfelt book about how a life is made, and how our nation defines itself on the most human level.

Book excerpt: By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas | Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize Selected by Time as One of the Ten Best Books of the Year | A New York Times Notable Book | Named One of the Best Books of the Year by The Washington Post Book World, The Christian Science Monitor, Rocky Mountain News, and Kirkus Reviews | A Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist | Winner of the ALA Alex Award | Finalist for the Costa Novel Award From award-winning writer David Mitchell comes a sinewy, meditative novel of boyhood on the cusp of adulthood and the old on the cusp of the new. Black Swan Green tracks a single year in what is, for thirteen-year-old Jason Taylor, the sleepiest village in muddiest Worcestershire in a dying Cold War England, 1982. But the thirteen chapters, each a short story in its own right, create an exquisitely observed world that is anything but sleepy. A world of Kissingeresque realpolitik enacted in boys’ games on a frozen lake; of “nightcreeping” through the summer backyards of strangers; of the tabloid-fueled thrills of the Falklands War and its human toll; of the cruel, luscious Dawn Madden and her power-hungry boyfriend, Ross Wilcox; of a certain Madame Eva van Outryve de Crommelynck, an elderly bohemian emigré who is both more and less than she appears; of Jason’s search to replace his dead grandfather’s irreplaceable smashed watch before the crime is discovered; of first cigarettes, first kisses, first Duran Duran LPs, and first deaths; of Margaret Thatcher’s recession; of Gypsies camping in the woods and the hysteria they inspire; and, even closer to home, of a slow-motion divorce in four seasons. Pointed, funny, profound, left-field, elegiac, and painted with the stuff of life, Black Swan Green is David Mitchell’s subtlest and most effective achievement to date. Praise for Black Swan Green “[David Mitchell has created] one of the most endearing, smart, and funny young narrators ever to rise up from the pages of a novel. . . . The always fresh and brilliant writing will carry readers back to their own childhoods. . . . This enchanting novel makes us remember exactly what it was like.”—The Boston Globe “[David Mitchell is a] prodigiously daring and imaginative young writer. . . . As in the works of Thomas Pynchon and Herman Melville, one feels the roof of the narrative lifted off and oneself in thrall.”—Time

Book The Rational Optimist

Download or read book The Rational Optimist written by Matt Ridley and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two hundred years the pessimists have dominated public discourse, insisting that things will soon be getting much worse. But in fact, life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down all across the globe. Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before. In his bold and bracing exploration into how human culture evolves positively through exchange and specialization, bestselling author Matt Ridley does more than describe how things are getting better. He explains why. An astute, refreshing, and revelatory work that covers the entire sweep of human history—from the Stone Age to the Internet—The Rational Optimist will change your way of thinking about the world for the better.

Book Hell s Angels

Download or read book Hell s Angels written by Hunter S. Thompson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gonzo journalist and literary roustabout Hunter S. Thompson flies with the angels—Hell’s Angels, that is—in this short work of nonfiction. “California, Labor Day weekend . . . early, with ocean fog still in the streets, outlaw motorcyclists wearing chains, shades and greasy Levis roll out from damp garages, all-night diners and cast-off one-night pads in Frisco, Hollywood, Berdoo and East Oakland, heading for the Monterey peninsula, north of Big Sur. . . The Menace is loose again.” Thus begins Hunter S. Thompson’s vivid account of his experiences with California’s most notorious motorcycle gang, the Hell’s Angels. In the mid-1960s, Thompson spent almost two years living with the controversial Angels, cycling up and down the coast, reveling in the anarchic spirit of their clan, and, as befits their name, raising hell. His book successfully captures a singular moment in American history, when the biker lifestyle was first defined, and when such countercultural movements were electrifying and horrifying America. Thompson, the creator of Gonzo journalism, writes with his usual bravado, energy, and brutal honesty, and with a nuanced and incisive eye; as The New Yorker pointed out, “For all its uninhibited and sardonic humor, Thompson’s book is a thoughtful piece of work.” As illuminating now as when originally published in 1967, Hell’s Angels is a gripping portrait, and the best account we have of the truth behind an American legend.

Not in other words, Sonny. Those are the perfect words. Immutable Law #2 Saving lives is not our priority. Following our policies is our priority. Protecting ourselves comes next. Avoiding lawsuits comes third. You come somewhere after that. * * * I was not even out of school before I witnessed my first doctor commit murder. It would not be my last - Lord, no - but I can recall that night as vividly as though it happened last week. Few medics forget their first physician homicide. * * * The ugly truth is some of the most macho medics on the planet turn into complete lollipops in the presence of an arrogant, incompetent physician. No matter how you parse it, that is professional cowardice. * * * K. Patrick McDonald is a graduate of UCSD La Jolla School of Medicine original Advanced Field Medicine program. He was appointed the first EMS Supervisor for the City of San Diego under Mayor (and then Governor) Pete Wilson's administration. He created one of the nation's first STAR (Special Trauma & Rescue) Teams and co-authored the San Diego City Disaster Preparedness Plan. He was a co-author of the National Waterpark Lifeguard Training Manual. He has acted as consultant to the U.S. Secret Service in Presidential Protection matters. The History of the American West merged with travel on two wheels, all wrapped around a girl that cannot be courted but will not be forgotten. Jeff Fletcher takes us on a desolate journey along the Continental Divide where a motorcycle named Marilyn comes face to face with a tumultuous past. Native Americans, Mountain Men, the Mexican Military, Spanish explorers seeking gold and Politicians all combine to expose one mystery after the next. "Jeff Fletcher has written a lyrical tale that includes redemption, bushels of lessons and hard-won wisdom (the wisdom that the less wounded leave by the side of the road), humility, courage, love and friendship, and the joy of getting where you're headed to discover the journey must continue. I look forward to his next adventure. -Jim Pilgrim Follow along on a life-changing, fifty-five-hundred-mile ride on a motorcycle named Marilyn. "A very relaxing read. Made the mistake at first to zip through it as I have never been a book reader. Then, I slowed down and read every word. It put me at ease, as the author goes through years of preparing for this great motorcycle adventure. Superb advice for a beginner or an experienced rider who can benefit greatly from Jeff's experience. I learned a lot. Turn off the TV and enjoy this relaxing read!" -MARK SAMPSON OF BIG DOG ADVENTURES Believe it or not, there are more miles of back road dirt in this country than interstate highway miles. There are more remote places where one can get blissfully lost than there are fast food joints. Marilyn Across America will take you for a ride on some of the most remote roads in America, where pavement is limited and epic adventure lies around every bend. See what it's really like to spend a month on a motorcycle. Read about planning a route, packing, choosing a motorcycle, navigation and the hardest part of all, leaving home. "I enjoyed this book. An easy read, this book will encourage you to seek Adventure. Not the hype but a simple reminder that Adventure is just outside the door. And if you open the door you will never be the same again..." -BRUCE CASEY "If you ride or have ridden trail bikes during your lifetime and have never heard of the Trans America Trail, you need to expose yourself to the trail by reading this book. After reading Marylin Across America, I'm already debating which trail bike I would want to acquire to ride the Trail. The idea of seeing America from dirt roads and not from a super freeway, seeing it almost the way one would have seen it 100 years ago, is supremely appealing for some reason. The people that you will meet, the sights you will see, this book will both prepare you and encourage you. -A FELLOW RIDER "The storytelling compels us to continue the read, ready our bikes, and eventually, hit the road to our own adventure. Thanks for the motivation!" -WADE "THE WANDERER"
