Book excerpt: On the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of Andre Lichnerowicz a number of his friends, many of whom have been his students or coworkers, decided to celebrate this event by preparing a jubilee volume of contributed articles in the two main fields of research marked by Lichnerowicz's work, namely differential geometry and mathematical physics. Limitations of space and time did not enable us to include papers from all Lichnerowicz's friends nor from all his former students. It was equally impossible to reflect in a single book the great variety of subjects tackled by Lichnerowicz. In spite of these limitations, we hope that this book reflects some of the present trends of fields in which he worked, and some of the subjects to which he contributed in his long - and not yet finished - career. This career was very much marked by the influence of his masters, Elie Cartan who introduced him to research in mathematics, mainly in geometry and its relations with mathematical physics, and Georges Darmois who developed his interest for mechanics and physics, especially the theory of relativity and electromagnetism. This par ticular combination, and his personal talent, made of him a natural scientific heir and continuator of the French mathematical physics school in the tradition of Henri Poincare. Some of his works would even be best qualified by a new field name, that of physical ma thematics: branches of pure mathematics entirely motivated by physics.

Book excerpt: This first volume of this two-volume set deals with the important recent discovery of the photomagneton of electromagnetic radiation, a discovery which is fundamental in quantum field theory and in quantum mechanics in matter. The photomagneton is the elementary quantum of magnetic flux density carried by the individual photon in free space, and is generated directly by the intrinsic angular momentum of the free photon. The volume develops the theory of the photomagneton in a series of papers, which cover all the major aspects of the theory, from classical electrodynamics to the relativistic quantum field. Several suggestions are given for experimental tests, and the available experimental evidence is discussed in detail. The overall conclusion of the series of papers is that the photomagneton, which is observable experimentally in magneto-optical phenomena, indicates the presence in free space of a novel, longitudinal, magnetic flux density, linked ineluctably to the usual transverse components. If the photomagneton is not observed, then a paradox would have emerged at the most fundamental electrodynamical level, necessitating a modification of the Maxwell equations themselves.

The expanding activity in this field is well documented by recent volumes in this Einstein Studies series on the History of General Relativity as well as by a series of international conferences on this topic at Osgood Hill (1986), Luminy (1988), and Pittsburgh (1991). The fourth of these conferences, hosted by the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, was held in Berlin from 31 July to 3 August 1995, with a record attendance of some 80 historians and philosophers of science, physicists, mathematicians, and as tronomers. Based on presentations at the Berlin conference, this volume provides an overview of the present state of research in this field, documenting not only the increasing scope of recent investigations in the history of relativity and gravitation but also the emergence of several key issues that will probably remain at the focus of debate in the near future. Professor Papas, from his studies at Harvard, brought with him to Pasadena a very fundamental and classical point of view that was instilled in all those who were associated with him. " He searched and demanded clarity and often, in the rather involved and engaging discussions which took place in his office, he demanded that the "baby picture" be clearly drawn on the blackboard. This requirement, certainly for some of us who were working in widely varied subjects ranging from relativistic plasmas to almost periodic media, has forced us to reexamine the fundamentals. The clear and lucid marriage of fundamental concepts to applications has been the trademark of Professor Papas's intellectual tradition, and has greatly in fluenced the thinking of all of those who have associated with him.
