Book In the Shadow of King Saul

Download or read book In the Shadow of King Saul written by Jerome Charyn and published by Bellevue Literary Press. This book was released on 2018-08-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jerome Charyn is one of the most important writers in American literature." —Michael Chabon "Whatever milieu [Charyn] chooses to inhabit . . . his sentences are pure vernacular music, his voice unmistakable." —Jonathan Lethem "With his customary linguistic verve and pulsing imagination, Charyn serves up here some of the tastiest essay writing available. He knows and loves New York past and present, and he draws on a lifetime of raucous experience and dedicated reading for a rich, heady, satisfying brew." —Phillip Lopate In the New York Review of Books, Joyce Carol Oates expressed her admiration for an equally prolific contemporary: "Among Charyn's writerly gifts is a dazzling energy. . . . [He is] an exuberant chronicler of the mythos of American life"; the Los Angeles Times described him as "absolutely unique among American writers." In these ten essays, Charyn shares personal stories about places steeped in history and myth, including his beloved New York, and larger-than-life personalities from the Bible and from the worlds of film, literature, politics, sports, and the author's own family. Together, writes Charyn, these essays create "my own lyrical autobiography. Several of the selections are about other writers, some celebrated, some forgotten. . . . All of [whom] scalped me in some way, left their mark." Jerome Charyn is the author of more than fifty works of fiction and nonfiction. Among other honors, Charyn has been named a Commander of Arts and Letters by the French Minister of Culture and received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Book The Princess with the Golden Hair

Download or read book The Princess with the Golden Hair written by Elizabeth Dey Jenkinson Waugh and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The friendship between Elizabeth Waugh and the influential literary critic and novelist Edmund Wilson developed in the early 1930s and lasted until Waugh's death in 1944. Despite the cultural differences between them - Waugh as a self-educated and emotional visual artist and Wilson an analytical and learned critic with a historical bent - they developed a bond that was close if often troubled." "The present volume contains eighty-eight letters from Waugh to Wilson, plus several from him to her and to her mother after her death. Their correspondence - now at Yale University - is presented here with meticulously detailed annotation of persons and events referred to in the letters, providing a provocative look into the private thoughts of these two representative figures from the artistic and literary worlds of the later 1930s. These letters, read against the portrayal of the fictional Imogen Loomis, offer fascinating insights into the process of artistic creation in the novel; taken with the biographical Introduction and Afterword, they can shed light on many of the problems faced by literary and artistic women of the upper middle class during the depression era."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: About the Book Daughters of Dunn House 1953 is a collection of first-person accounts from seven octogenarians who reflect upon overviews of their lives from 1953 to the present, lifelong friendships made at Dunn House dorm, and the exciting careers generated by the opportunity to participate in the Ford Foundation Early Entrant Program at Fisk University without having first finished high school. Stories should appeal to all ages, for topics range from pertinent historical eras, family genealogy, educational and personal experiences from childhood and adult levels, glimpses of undergraduate HBCUs in action versus several graduate institutions, explorations of places from the U.S. and abroad, to differences in character and personal problem solving. Book Lives Ripped in Italy from the 1970s to the present

Download or read book Lives Ripped in Italy from the 1970s to the present written by Antonella Betti and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 40,000 children were forced to leave their families. No one is immune from this slaughter and the destruction that must be stopped. Emma and her siblings are still the standard bearers of all of this, while the system still maintains maximum mute sound to prevent the machine's system eventually freezing and interrupting picking on the victim. Children are not ATMs, but they are children nonetheless (they must be treated as people and not as objects) and they have the right to grow up in their families. It is time to say enough about the slaughter of children, whether they have been placed in foster care and / or for adoption, placed in a foster home, or simply transferred by their family for trivial reasons.

Book Animated Encounters

Download or read book Animated Encounters written by Daisy Yan Du and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s role in the history of world animation has been trivialized or largely forgotten. In Animated Encounters Daisy Yan Du addresses this omission in her study of Chinese animation and its engagement with international forces during its formative period, the 1940s–1970s. She introduces readers to transnational movements in early Chinese animation, tracing the involvement of Japanese, Soviet, American, Taiwanese, and China’s ethnic minorities, at socio-historical or representational levels, in animated filmmaking in China. Du argues that Chinese animation was international almost from its inception and that such border-crossing exchanges helped make it “Chinese” and subsequently transform the history of world animation. She highlights animated encounters and entanglements to provide an alternative to current studies of the subject characterized by a preoccupation with essentialist ideas of “Chineseness” and further questions the long-held belief that the forty-year-period in question was a time of cultural isolationism for China due to constant wars and revolutions. China’s socialist era, known for the pervasiveness of its political propaganda and suppression of the arts, unexpectedly witnessed a golden age of animation. Socialist collectivism, reinforced by totalitarian politics and centralized state control, allowed Chinese animation to prosper and flourish artistically. In addition, the double marginality of animation—a minor art form for children—coupled with its disarming qualities and intrinsic malleability and mobility, granted animators and producers the double power to play with politics and transgress ideological and geographical borders while surviving censorship, both at home and abroad. A captivating and enlightening history, Animated Encounters will attract scholars and students of world film and animation studies, children’s culture, and modern Chinese history.
