Book Once Upon a Time Lord

Download or read book Once Upon a Time Lord written by Ivan Phillips and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Every story ever told really happened...' (The Doctor, 'Hell Bent', 2015) Stories are, fundamentally what Doctor Who is all about. In Once Upon a Time Lord, Ivan Phillips explores a wide range of perspectives on these stories and presents a lively and richly-varied analysis of the accumulated tales that constitute this popular modern mythology. Concerned equally with 'classic' and 'new' Who, Phillips looks at how aspects of the Time Lord's story have been developed on television and beyond, tracing lines of connection and divergence across various media. He discusses Doctor Who as a mythology that has drawn on its own past in often complex ways, at the same time reworking elements from many other sources, whether literary, cinematic, televisual or historical. Once Upon A Time Lord offers an original take on this singular hero's journey, reading the unsettled enigma of the Doctor in relation to the characters, narratives and locations that he has encountered across more than half a century.

Book Apocalypse Cinema

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Szendy
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2015-09-01
  • ISBN : 0823264823
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Apocalypse Cinema written by Peter Szendy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocalypse-cinema is not only the end of time that has so often been staged as spectacle in films like 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, and The Terminator. By looking at blockbusters that play with general annihilation while also paying close attention to films like Melancholia, Cloverfield, Blade Runner, and Twelve Monkeys, this book suggests that in the apocalyptic genre, film gnaws at its own limit. Apocalypse-cinema is, at the same time and with the same double blow, the end of the world and the end of the film. It is the consummation and the (self-)consumption of cinema, in the form of an acinema that Lyotard evoked as the nihilistic horizon of filmic economy. The innumerable countdowns, dazzling radiations, freeze-overs, and seismic cracks and crevices are but other names and pretexts for staging film itself, with its economy of time and its rewinds, its overexposed images and fades to white, its freeze-frames and digital touch-ups. The apocalyptic genre is not just one genre among others: It plays with the very conditions of possibility of cinema. And it bears witness to the fact that, every time, in each and every film, what Jean-Luc Nancy called the cine-world is exposed on the verge of disappearing. In a Postface specially written for the English edition, Szendy extends his argument into a debate with speculative materialism. Apocalypse-cinema, he argues, announces itself as cinders that question the “ultratestimonial” structure of the filmic gaze. The cine-eye, he argues, eludes the correlationism and anthropomorphic structure that speculative materialists have placed under critique, allowing only the ashes it bears to be heard.

Book After Representation

Download or read book After Representation written by R. Clifton Spargo and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Representation? explores one of the major issues in Holocaust studiesùthe intersection of memory and ethics in artistic expression, particularly within literature. As experts in the study of literature and culture, the scholars in this collection examine the shifting cultural contexts for Holocaust representation and reveal how writersùwhether they write as witnesses to the Holocaust or at an imaginative distance from the Nazi genocideùarticulate the shadowy borderline between fact and fiction, between event and expression, and between the condition of life endured in atrocity and the hope of a meaningful existence. What imaginative literature brings to the study of the Holocaust is an ability to test the limits of language and its conventions. After Representation? moves beyond the suspicion of representation and explores the changing meaning of the Holocaust for different generations, audiences, and contexts.

Book The Kingdom of the Beast and the End of the World

Download or read book The Kingdom of the Beast and the End of the World written by J. C. Alexander and published by RevelationStation.com. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritative, bold and different. The final word on prophecy. Written in everyday language. It's not often that a book comes along that causes you to reexamine everything that you have ever learned on a particular subject. In a manner reminiscent of The Prayer of Jabez and The Purpose Driven Live, The Kingdom of the Beast takes you on a journey of enlightenment that will leave you satisfied that you finally understood what the end time prophecies are all about. There are no magic formulas for interpreting the prophecies other than accepting what is written. This book convincingly, and scripturally, moves the reader beyond some of the traditional man made ideas that have confused the Church and kept it from coming to a unified understanding of the prophecies, and then opens things up witha down to earth simplicity.

Book The End of the World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our fear of the world ending, like our fear of the dark, is ancient, deep-seated and perennial. It crosses boundaries of space and time, recurs in all human communities and finds expression in every aspect of cultural production - from pre-historic cave paintings to high-tech computer games. This volume examines historical and imaginary scenarios of apocalypse, the depiction of its likely triggers, and imagined landscapes in the aftermath of global destruction. Its discussion moves effortlessly from classic novels including Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, to blockbuster films such as Blade Runner, Armageddon and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Lisboa also takes into account religious doctrine, scientific research and the visual arts to create a penetrating, multi-disciplinary study that provides profound insight into one of Western culture's most fascinating and enduring preoccupations.
