Book Once Upon a Time in Melbourne

Download or read book Once Upon a Time in Melbourne written by Liam Houlihan and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time in Melbourne there was a gigolo who thought he was a vampire. He bit the tongue off a prostitute and was then murdered in broad daylight on a suburban street. His execution, top brass believed, was organised by police. The aftershocks of this killing—and the murder of a state witness and his wife inside their fortress home—rocked the police force and the Parliament, vanquished one government and brought the next to its knees. This is the story of police corruption for years swept under the carpet to avoid a Royal Commission. It is the story of a police force politicised to the point of paralysis and a witness protection program that buries its mistakes. It involves a policeman still free and living in a very big house, a drug baron who survived the gangland war only to be murdered in the state's most secure jail, and battles royale within a police force comprised of thousands of pistol-packing members. This is the story of Melbourne around the first decade of the new millennium: its lawmen, villains and politicians. It is a bizarre, tawdry, unbelievable tale. But every word of it happened.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compilation of stories and poems I’ve written over the past ten or more years. It will, in all probability, be my final publishing endeavor ... or maybe not? I’ve written these stories and poems all over the world, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, Mount Kisco, NY, Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY. Most of the stories are fiction with some reflections on life and spirituality. As we grow older our outlook and beliefs evolve, and we wrestle again with our spiritual connections with God and the Universe. Oddly enough, few if any have been written in Ireland, though many about Ireland, and especially Abbeyside, the village where I was formed and had such an influence on who and what I would become. Though times were hard and money scarce, I wouldn’t swap my upbringing there with the most affluent denizens anywhere on the planet. There were times I was dissatisfied, growing up, for I had a great desire to travel the world and experience other cultures, but as I grow older, I appreciate more and more, the lessons learned, lifelong friendships made, and the optimism and will to forge better times that always existed there. To be clear, this existed, not just where I grew up but throughout Ireland. But, it seemed, Saint Augustine, our patron saint was keeping a particular eye out for the village and its people. A special thanks to my daughter, Triona, my son-in law, JP, and my good friend, Eddie Cantwell, who each helped at various stages in bringing this book to fruition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quirky, thrilling, darkly-funny page-turner that explores the fuzzy lines between sanity and insanity, magic and reality, love and duty. It’s 1969. An eight-year-old girl, Elizabeth Squire, has a choice to make: to be disabled by the circumstances of her own botched birth or to become extraordinary. In Buffy Cram’s captivating new novel, Elizabeth narrates the story of her childhood in the late sixties, describing how she came to be at a Vancouver halfway house at the age of nineteen. Once Upon an Effing Time chronicles the sometime-exploitative relationship between Elizabeth and Margaret, her mother, and the bizarre and criminal misadventures they have after running away from Ontario’s cheese belt and their “Big Sad Story.” Attempting to bond with her neglectful mother, Elizabeth learns to adopt personas and live multiple lives, transforms into a fortune teller named MeMe who speaks primarily in Bob Dylan lyrics, and joins an American hippie doomsday cult. Elizabeth’s life is fragmented between ordinary childhood pleasures and indulging her mother’s conspiracy theories about the upcoming moon landing by hiding pamphlets in New York City public library books. Throughout, Buffy Cram weaves humour and heartbreak together to form an engaging narrative about cults—the cult of family, the cult of counterculture, the cult of Rock n’ Roll—and the role of story within those cults.

Book excerpt: When Dani Springer's teenage son decides to move to the East Coast to live with his father, she pulls up stakes and heads for the Berkshires to open a Bed and Breakfast, and wait for him to come to his senses. She finds the perfect New England Colonial with a magnificent English-style cottage garden. The only catch is that the house comes with the eighty-three year old owner, who will only sell the house if she can continue living in the guesthouse, rent free. At first, the arrangement seems simple enough, but nothing about the relationship between Dani and Clarissa Hamilton is simple because, long ago, the house became the most important part of Clarissa's life. Now that it is being turned into a business, she is not amused and finds ways to sabotage Dani's efforts to get The Maples up and running. The battle between the women is sometimes funny, sometimes painful. The wild card in the mix is Evan Murray, the landscape architect who is reworking the cottage garden. The threads of Clarissa's, Evan's, and Dani's lives become entangled as Evan and Clarissa come to terms with a past they didn't know they shared.
