Book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases

Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book The Writings of Barbara Dumas Francis

Download or read book The Writings of Barbara Dumas Francis written by Barbara Dumas Francis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Writings of Barbara Dumas Francis capture a rich life told in concise but vivid snippets. This crisp volume is remarkable in its breath, encompassing the effects of the Great Migration, separation from mother, the thrill of first flight, family tradition, and the black church. Romantic and sensual, sage and sapient, the narrative is also poetic, particularly in its painting of the rich example of the writers loving aunts, as well as the budding promise of her grandchildren. The genius of writings simplicity is evident in an instructional narrative about caregiving of a terminally-ill loved one, which is conveyed so deceptively matter of fact that its poignance enthralls the reader unawares. In its highlights, the book offers the reader a capital life tour as this world-wise author learns to reconcile lifes inimitable joys and its inevitable sorrows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry is so personal. It is hard to convince readers to take the time to feel the words, not just read them. The Eighth Wonder of the World presents something we all possess and don’t realize its value. So for this fifth book, The Twelfth Wonder of the World, to resonate with the buyer/reader, a love of poetry will initially be the reason it sells. After that, it will be the value to each reader as they capitalize on the wonders we all possess. The series of Wonders of the World poems are to relate all humans on Earth to a common denominator. The mind (eight wonder) and the soul (ninth wonder) are our human metaphysical commonalties, whereas the heart (tenth wonder) and the brain (the eleventh wonder) are physical commonalities to all of us as individuals. And finally, the spirit (twelfth wonder), our infinite energy, is what each of us are metaphysically, for the infinite trip from here to there, the final wonder.

Book Once a Man Twice a Boy

Download or read book Once a Man Twice a Boy written by Claude Banks and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open this book and read whatever chapter appears and you will be transported back in time – Tardis style – into village life around Pertenhall and Kimbolton over the last 80 years. You will immediately become part of the scene. Claude Banks treats readers to a rich potpourri of stories of village life with a wicked eye for detail… Feel the austerity of the agricultural depression leading up to World War 2. Giggle at the exploits of the local cricketers and footballers; we imagine we are in Claude's classroom at Kimbolton Grammar School in the late 1930s. Stories are told with understated humour, including his recollections of service in the Home Guard under the command of a real life Captain Mainwaring. Indeed, all seemed to change with the advent of World War 2, especially with the influx of American Air Force personnel and how they brightened up local village life, soon to be followed by Italian and German prisoners of war who worked on the land. There are many, often inadvertent, comparisons to life as it is now. Whilst appreciative of past times Claude is not wedded to them and shows huge adaptability to the challenges that every decade has put before him. He is a true old fashioned naturalist and treats readers to stories about nature and country pursuits – especially shooting and horse racing. Overall, the book provides superb insights into past country life with its full range of joy and tears, and a cast of characters that Chaucer would have been proud of!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been living in silence with pain for 14 years. Never could understand why I was treated so unfair and unjust, in the court of law, after the murder of my son. My experience in the court system, have left me staggering, I have lost my faith in the justice system. I am just a nobody trying to tell somebody, about the way I was treated, in the court of law, by high powerful people who you would look up to, for Justice To Be Served. I think my story will make a great spiritual movie, I think my story will inspire and give so much of inspiration to someone in need for someone to hear their silent cry in their voice. I think my story will make a great true crime movie along with, how to get away with murder, why the truth did not set me free? Episodes of a soap opera, I am a fan of the Young and Restless. Black on black crimes and murders. A six month job, a six month resident and a short term relationship that ended in a DNA testing landed me in a court room, a court room where I felt discrimination, I was mislead, deceived and the presence of court house scam was there. Creditably and morale values meant nothing in that court of law I was in. So, here I am, speaking out and pray that I touch someone, to help me, bring my story back into to the light with life once again. A dream I can feel about to come to reality. Oh yes, my Jesus is getting me ready to say, Justice Have Been Served.

Book A Dictionary of American Proverbs

Download or read book A Dictionary of American Proverbs written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 1348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have a gift for coining proverbs. "A picture is worth a thousand words" was not, as you might imagine, the product of ancient Chinese wisdom -- it was actually minted by advertising executive Fred Barnard in a 1921 advertisement for Printer's Ink magazine. After all, Americans are first and foremost a practical people and proverbs can be loosely defined as pithy statements that are generally accepted as true and useful. The next logical step would be to gather all of this wisdom together for a truly American celebration of shrewd advice.A Dictionary of American Proverbs is the first major collection of proverbs in the English language based on oral sources rather than written ones. Listed alphabetically according to their most significant key word, it features over 15,000 entries including uniquely American proverbs that have never before been recorded, as well as thousands of traditional proverbs that have found their way into American speech from classical, biblical, British, continental European, and American literature. Based on the fieldwork conducted over thirty years by the American Dialect Society, this volume is complete with historical references to the earliest written sources, and supplies variants and recorded geographical distribution after each proverb. Many surprised await the reader in this vast treasure trove of wit and wisdom. Collected here are nuggets of popular wisdom on all aspects of American life: weather, agriculture, travel, money, business, food, neighbors, friends, manners, government, politics, law, health, education, religion, music, song, and dance. And, to further enhance browsing pleasure, the editors have provided a detailed guide to the use of the work. While it's true that many of our best known proverbs have been supplied by the ever-present "Anonymous," many more can be attributed to some very famous Americans, like Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, J. Pierpont Morgan, Thomas Alva Edison, Abigail Adams, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name but a few offered in this fascinating collection.Who wouldn't want to know the origin of "the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings?" This uniquely American proverb and many more are gathered together in A Dictionary of American Proverbs. A great resource for students and scholars of literature, psychology, folklore, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural history, this endlessly intriguing volume is also a delightful companion for anyone with an interest in American culture.
