Download or read book Luke Acts and Jewish Historiography written by Samson Uytanlet and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Samson Uytanlet states his observation that there is an unnecessary disjunction between Luke's theology and literature in previous studies on Luke-Acts: Luke's theology is typically studied in light of Jewish writings while Luke's literature is studied in relation with Greco-Roman works. The author shows that there are theological, literary, and ideological elements that ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish writings share which are also present in Luke's work. In areas where they diverge, however, Luke-Acts shows closer affinity to Jewish writings.

Download or read book A History of Roman Literature 2 vols written by M. von Albrecht and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 1864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael von Albrecht's A History of Roman Literature, originally published in German, can rightly be seen as the long awaited counterpart to Albin Lesky's Geschichte der Griechischen Literatur. In what will probably be the last survey made by a single scholar the whole of Latin literature from Livius Andronicus up to Boethius comes to the fore. 'Literature' is taken here in its broad, antique sense, and therefore also includes e.g. rhetoric, philosophy and history. Special attention has been given to the influence of Latin literature on subsequent centuries down to our own days. Extensive indices give access to this monument of learning. The introductions in Von Albrecht's texts, together with the large bibliographies make further study both more fruitful and easy.
Download or read book Literature and Religion at Rome written by Denis Feeney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent reevaluations of Roman religion by ancient historians have stressed the vitality and creativity of the Romans' religious system throughout its long history of continual adaptation to new challenges. Capitalising on these insights, Denis Feeney argues that Roman literature was not an artificial or parasitic irrelevance in this context, but an important element of the dynamic religious culture, with its own status as another form of religious knowledge. Since Roman culture, both literary and religious, was so thoroughly Hellenised, the book also makes a case for a reconsideration of the traditional antitheses between Greek and Roman literature and religion, arguing against Hellenocentric prejudices and in favour of a more creative model of cultural interaction.
