Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Our Yesterdays is the first history of the City of Detroit to be published in the last twenty-five years. It is an account based on extensive historical research, yet is written in such a style as to make interesting and enjoyable reading. The authors tell of the founding of the the town by the French, control by the British, and growth as an American city. These episodes are recounted in the words and deeds of the people who lived and worked here, men like Judge Woodward, Father Gabriel Richard, and Governor Lewis Cass. Here also are accounts of the expansion of the automobile industry, the days of the roaring twenties, prohibition, the great depression, World Wars I and II, and the city of the 1950s and 1960s. This is the story of a great city; a story of past deeds, present problems, and future hopes. But more important, this is a story by and about the people of Detroit, for it is the people that have made this city great.

Book The Last Days of Detroit

Download or read book The Last Days of Detroit written by Mark Binelli and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * It was 'the most modern city in the world, the city of tomorrow'. But the Fifties witnessed one of the greatest economic slides of the last century, as Detroit, formerly a beacon of the capitalist dream, degenerated into the urban wilderness it is today, where trees grow from the rooftops of derelict buildings and wild pheasants roam the long-empty parking lots. * By the end of the nineteenth century Detroit was thriving. 1913 saw the arrival of Henry Ford and the Model T plant, mass-producing cars and transforming the area into the Silicon Valley of its day. By the mid-1950s General Motors had become the single biggest employer on earth, and Detroit the fourth largest city in America. * But by the time Berry Gordy founded Motown Records in 1960 - creating Detroit's other great assembly line - the cracks were already beginning to show- big industry was looking elsewhere for cheaper sites, cheaper labour and better tax breaks; urban planning was in meltdown; corruption was rife; racial tensions were running high. * The 1967 riots - at the time the worst in US history - left 43 dead, more than 7,000 arrested and 3,000 buildings destroyed. Detroit, a former beacon of the capitalist dream, had degenerated into an urban wilderness where unemployment ran at 50%. With more guns in the city than people, the murder rate was the highest in America - three times that of New York. * Mark Binelli returned to live in his native Detroit after a break of many years. He tells the story of the boom and the bust - and of the new society to be found emerging from the debris- Detroit with its urban farms and vibrant arts scene - Detroit as a laboratory for the post-industrial, post-recession world. Here's what an iconic rust-belt city now looks like and how it might transform and regenerate itself in the twenty-first century.

Book Rosie A Detroit Herstory

Download or read book Rosie A Detroit Herstory written by Bailey Sisoy Isgro and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosie, a Detroit Herstory is a remarkable story for young readers about women workers during World War II. At this time in history, women began working jobs that had previously been performed only by men, such as running family businesses, operating machinery, and working on assembly lines. Across America, women produced everything from ships and tanks, to ammunition and uniforms, in spectacular quantities. Their skill, bravery, tenacity, and spirit became a rallying point of American patriotism and aided in defining Detroit as the Arsenal of Democracy. Even though women workers were invaluable to the war effort, they met with many challenges that their male counterparts never faced. Yet, for all of their struggles, their successes were monumental. Today, we refer to them as "Rosies"—a group of women defined not by the identity of a single riveter but by the collective might of hundreds of thousands of women whose labors helped save the world. Rosie, a Detroit Herstory features informative, rhyming text by Bailey Sisoy Isgro and beautifully illustrated original artwork by Nicole Lapointe. The story begins with the start of the Second World War and the eventual need for women to join the American workforce as men shipped out to war. By the end of the story, readers will have a better understanding of who and what Rosie the Riveter really was, how Detroit became a wartime industrial powerhouse, and why the legacy of women war workers is still so important. A glossary is provided for more difficult concepts, as well as a timeline of events. SIsoy Isgro and Lapointe first came up with the idea for the book on a ten-hour drive to the 2017 Women’s March in Washington, D.C., inspired by the overwhelming number of women who came together for the event. Rosie, a Detroit Herstory is written for children ages 8 to 12, but any reader interested in Detroit or women in history will appreciate this entertaining chronicle.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ... unconscious. On October 9th he passed to the land whence no traveler has returned. When Dr. Morse Stewart began practice in Detroit, the state of Michigan and its university were but five years old. Detroit's population was about ten thousand, eight thousand being French who lived by farming, hunting, fishing and collecting furs. The rest were army people and their families, with mechanics needed for such a population. To these must be added a motley swarm of land-lookers, numbers of the suddenly rich, boomers, speculators, sharpers, merchants, lawyers and doctors. By decision of the supreme court any person could become a doctor by assuming the title. As may be inferred fcom the character of the population, the fees of the doctors were meager, if any, and often had to be taken in "store pay," which meant a discount of twenty-five or more per cent, for cash. The practice of medicine was quite unsatisfactory, both from the popular ignorance of sanitary conditions and the absence of those aids which characterize modern practice. With the practical application of the discoveries and inventions which transformed Detroit from a measly little village to the peerless metropolis of to-day, and the practice of medicine from a series of guesses to accurate knowledge based on demonstrated facts, Dr. Stewart kept such close touch that at the close of sixty-four years of continuous labor in his profession his actual practice was wholly modern. Time forbids proof of the proposition that the medical profession of Michigan has been a very large factor in the building of the state. Educated, clean, strong physicians like Dr. Stewart have ever exercised large influence upon currents of state life and invariably for their benefit. In 1852 Dr. Stewart...

Download or read book Black Detroit written by Herb Boyd and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAACP 2017 Image Award Finalist 2018 Michigan Notable Books honoree The author of Baldwin’s Harlem looks at the evolving culture, politics, economics, and spiritual life of Detroit—a blend of memoir, love letter, history, and clear-eyed reportage that explores the city’s past, present, and future and its significance to the African American legacy and the nation’s fabric. Herb Boyd moved to Detroit in 1943, as race riots were engulfing the city. Though he did not grasp their full significance at the time, this critical moment would be one of many he witnessed that would mold his political activism and exposed a city restless for change. In Black Detroit, he reflects on his life and this landmark place, in search of understanding why Detroit is a special place for black people. Boyd reveals how Black Detroiters were prominent in the city’s historic, groundbreaking union movement and—when given an opportunity—were among the tireless workers who made the automobile industry the center of American industry. Well paying jobs on assembly lines allowed working class Black Detroiters to ascend to the middle class and achieve financial stability, an accomplishment not often attainable in other industries. Boyd makes clear that while many of these middle-class jobs have disappeared, decimating the population and hitting blacks hardest, Detroit survives thanks to the emergence of companies such as Shinola—which represent the strength of the Motor City and and its continued importance to the country. He also brings into focus the major figures who have defined and shaped Detroit, including William Lambert, the great abolitionist, Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, Coleman Young, the city’s first black mayor, diva songstress Aretha Franklin, Malcolm X, and Ralphe Bunche, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. With a stunning eye for detail and passion for Detroit, Boyd celebrates the music, manufacturing, politics, and culture that make it an American original.
