Book Sir Robert Walpole s Poets

Download or read book Sir Robert Walpole s Poets written by Tone Sundt Urstad and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During Sir Robert Walpole's term as "Prime Minister" exorbitant amounts of money were spent on propaganda in support of his administration. Since nearly all the major writers of the period adopted an anti-government stance, however, historians have shown far more interest in the organization and contents of opposition propaganda than in its pro-government counterpart. This book is the first comprehensive study of the literature published in support of Walpole's administration, and explores important pro-government themes, and also explains how the propaganda network was organized and what precisely the Old Corps Whig leadership hoped to achieve."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Fairy Queen A Semi Opera in Five Acts

Download or read book The Fairy Queen A Semi Opera in Five Acts written by Henry Purcell and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 1999-08-26 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Fairy Queen" was first performed in 1692, and was repeated in the following year. For the revival in 1693 Purcell added all the music of Act I., and the two songs, "Ye gentle spirits of the air" (No. 24) and "The Plaint" (No. 43). The Opera was adapted from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," but Purcell did not set a single line of Shakespeare's play to music. The play was considerably curtailed, many lines altered, and some Scenes rearranged; in this mutilated version it was acted, not sung. At the end of each Act some pretext is found for introducing a musical entertainment which has little or nothing to do with the play. Purcell's music, composed towards the end of his short career, includes some of his best work, and shows strong Italian influence.

Book The Lost Queen

Download or read book The Lost Queen written by Anne M Stott and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-03-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the only child of the Prince Regent and Caroline of Brunswick, Princess Charlotte of Wales (1796-1817) was the heiress presumptive to the throne. Her parents’ marriage had already broken up by the time she was born. She had a difficult childhood and a turbulent adolescence, but she was popular with the public, who looked to her to restore the good name of the monarchy. When she broke off her engagement to a Dutch prince, her father put her under virtual imprisonment and she endured a period of profound unhappiness. But she held out for the freedom to choose her husband, and when she married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg she finally achieved contentment. Her happiness was cruelly cut short when she died in childbirth at the age of twenty-one only eighteen months later. A shocked nation went into mourning for its ‘people’s princess’, the queen who never was.

Book Ask a Manager

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
