Book Perspectives in Southern Hemisphere Limnology

Download or read book Perspectives in Southern Hemisphere Limnology written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the Symposium on Perspectives in Southern Hemisphere Limnology which was held from 3-13 July 1984 in Wilderness, South Africa. It can be asked why this Symposium was necessary at a time when conferences, symposia and other gatherings of learned people abound. Limnologists in the Southern Hemisphere have for some time been pointing out that limnological theory and inland water management practices have been developed almost exclusively in Northern Hemisphere temperate latitudes. Most of the land masses of the Southern Hemisphere fall within lower latitudes, 0 from 20-40 S, where the climate tends to be dry, with low cloud cover and with high levels of incident radiation and high water temperatures. Wide extremes are experienced in both rainfall and runoff, which occur mainly in summer. Sedimentary geological structures give rise to dispersive soils and highly turbid waters. Physiological, behavioural or developmental adaptations in the floral and faunal components are necessary to cope with desiccation and low visibility.

Book Ecology and Biogeography in Sri Lanka

Download or read book Ecology and Biogeography in Sri Lanka written by C.H. Fernando and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the late Professor Joachim Illies suggested in 1980 that I edit a volume of the Monographiae Biologicae on Sri Lanka, I was glad to accept the challenge. Although I had spent only six years of my research and teaching career in Sri Lanka, I had made personal contact or corresponded with many scientists who had worked in, still work in, or who have studied material from Sri Lanka. The present domicile of the authors of the chapters in this volume shows the wide geographic spread of interest in Sri Lanka, and indicates also the dispersion of Sri Lankan scientists like myself. Sri Lanka has had a relatively long history of indigenous scientific research in the natural sciences. From the early work of Kelaart (1852, Prodromous Fauna Zeylanicae, Ceylon Govt. Press, 250 pp.) to the present time, there has been a more or less sustained research effort in the natural sciences. The Colombo Museum, which celebrated its centenary only a few years ago, and the world famous Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, served as repositories and bases for continued research on the fauna and flora. There are a number of land marks in these studies.

Book A Guide to Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton

Download or read book A Guide to Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton written by C. H. Fernando and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book on Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. It covers the whole spectrum of Tropical Freshwater zooplankton and includes the non conventional group, the Ostracoda. One chapter is devoted to miscellaneous groups like Chaoborus, Hydracarina, Protozoa and some others that occur from time to time in freshwater zooplankton. Another chapter, on the interactions of zooplankton and fisheries, should make the book more useful to tropical fish culturists and fishery biologists. The authors of the chapters on the different groups of zooplankton and fisheries are authorities in these fields They have also collaborated with the leading researchers in the field from all continents and this work has benefited from input of both younger scientists and senior collaborators working closely with the authors in laboratories worldwide. The text is written clearly and concisely in as simple a way as the material permits, so that it can be used by workers who are not specialists in zooplankton, and in developing countries. However, the material is comprehensive, authoritative and up to date. The book is profusely illustrated with 121 plates (1119 line drawings) and should enable users to obtain reliable diagnoses to species level in many cases and also glean basic ideas about methodology, ecology, zoogeography and classification. The book, though written by six authors, is completely integrated as a guide to Tropical Freshwater Zooplankton. This book should be of use to a wide variety of freshwater biologists, both beginners and those already working in the field for some time. There is much material that is relevant and up to date, some of it that is not familiar to many students in the field. The literature coverage is designed to give a wide perspective of research in the field without attempting to be exhaustive. Key references are included so that the user can access almost all the literature in the field but with special reference to the tropical region. This book should be on the shelf of individual workers in zooplankton and especially in laboratories where work on freshwater ecology and sytematics of the fauna is being carried out. Libraries should have a copy available as a general reference for freshwater biologists. Researchers and students of freshwater zooplankton, fishery scientists and fish culturists in tropical regions will benefit from this wide-ranging book.

Book Lake Naivasha Kenya

    Book Details:
  • Author : David M. Harper
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-17
  • ISBN : 9401720312
  • Pages : 205 pages

Download or read book Lake Naivasha Kenya written by David M. Harper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive study of an east African lake for thirty years. It represents the culmination of research expeditions which stretch back twenty years and is thus able to pick up long term changes which the individual research activities do not reveal. Lake Naivasha is a tropical lake whose natural fluctuations are now dwarfed by human impacts. Papers show how the irrigation for horticulture and power cooling has reduced the lake depth significantly; exotic arrivals have altered the plant community beyond recognition and its commercial value as a fishery and a tourist feature are reduced by over use. Despite this, the lake has considerable conservation value at present. It provides a different case study in the ever-growing library of the effects of human follies. Lake Naivasha has achieved global importance in the past ten years because its waters are used to sustain the largest horticultural industry in Africa. The book highlights its fragility under such pressure and points out the way towards sustainable use of the water and the ecosystem.
