Download or read book On the Religious Office of the Universities Classic Reprint written by Brooke Foss Westcott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Religious Office of the Universities The Papers which are collected in this little volume have been printed or reprinted at the desire of friends to whose judgment I feel constrained to yield. There is, I trust, a distinct unity of thought running through them, which corresponds with a deep conviction of the grandeur of the office of our ancient and religious Universities at the present crisis of national thought and life; and I should value no privilege more highly than to be able to convey what I feel on this subject to others, who may be able to regard it more completely and from other points of view. One circumstance perhaps may lend a value to the opinions which I have expressed to which they could not otherwise lay claim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Episcopalian Demand for Christian Schools The introduction of religion into state schools in any form commensurate with the needs of the children is out of the question. Herein lies the hopelessness of the present situa tion; and the sooner this point is understood and conceded by all parties interested the sooner this most important of all subjects before Church and State today can be argued -to a finish. 'no Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jew, agnostic, or atheist is willing to be taxed to help some one else choose the religion which shall be taught his child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of the Women's Department of the Canton Christian College Our Chinese people are already convinced by the results in the mission schools of the necessity of educating girls. The Women's Department was really be gun as early as 1900 by Mrs. O. F. Wisner at her home in Macao. The story of the Girls' School in 1903, connected with the College, has been told by Mrs. Woods. It was the eager desire of our Chinese staff to see this work continued, and I took into my home seven girls, under the care of my wife, Who were admitted to the boys' classes. Since we admitted these girls many men and women of high rank as well as others have begged us to admit their girls to our College, but we have had to deny all these requests. I am confident that as many girls will apply for entrance as we wish to admit, and that their parents will pay the same fees as those paid for the boys, and that our Chinese friends will contribute liberally toward the running expenses and buildings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious, Ethical and Social Work in a Cosmopolitan University The first column of figures shows the denominational registration. The second, the percentage of the total Church registration. The reasons why the total number is so much less than the matri culation of the University are: I. The present system of registration has only been in use for two years, and as it only reaches the Fresh men, there are practically no records of the two upper classes in the college. The records of the professional schools are more complete. 2. Only those records are kept in which the men state some religious preference, and a large number do not fill out the blanks, because it is entirely voluntary. 3. The records do not include the Summer School, Graduate School, Evening School, and Teachers' Courses, which are included in the matriculation. Subtracting the registration in these schools, the Church registra tion would be about fifty per cent. Of the total.
