Book On the Measurement of Low Level Hurricane Winds by Airborne Dual Beam Radar

This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need for a suitable airborne instrument for the remote measurement of wind speeds near the surface within hurricanes and typhoons. This study considers the applicability and implementability of several pseudo-Doppler radar methods of wind speed determination for hurricane reconnaissance missions. Useful measurements of the wind speed and wind direction profiles for any altitude region below the aircraft, appear to be feasible using two of the systems described. (Author).

Book Wind Measurement by Dual beam Radar a Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation

Download or read book Wind Measurement by Dual beam Radar a Theoretical and Experimental Evaluation written by Walter H. Lob and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind measurements taken during two storms in March 1967, using a dual-beam incoherent radar, are in good agreement with those obtained with a Doppler radar. During a third storm the dual-beam results fluctuated with apparent periods of the order of one to three minutes. A theory is developed to explain these fluctuations as the result of eddies of one third to one mile diameters and peripheral speeds of one quarter to one half. A limitation on range is derived for dual-beam wind measurement in cyclonic storms. Design criteria relating to PRF, wavelength, and antenna size for dual-beam wind-measuring radars are developed. Book Combined VHF Dopplar Radar and Airborne CV 990 Measurements of Atmospheric Winds on the Mesoscale

Download or read book Combined VHF Dopplar Radar and Airborne CV 990 Measurements of Atmospheric Winds on the Mesoscale written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hourly measurements of wind speed and direction obtained using two wind profiling Doppler radars during two prolonged jet stream occurrences over western Pennsylvania were analyzed. In particular, the time-variant characteristics of derived shear profiles were examined. To prevent a potential loss of structural detail and retain statistical significance, data from both radars were stratified into categories based on the location data from the Penn State radar were also compared to data from Pittsburgh radiosondes. Profiler data dropouts were studied in an attempt to determine possible reasons for the apparently reduced performance of profiling radars operating beneath a jet stream. Temperature profiles for the radar site were obtained using an interpolated temperature and dewpoint temperature sounding procedure developed at Penn State. The combination of measured wind and interpolated temperature profiles allowed Richardson number profiles to be generated for the profiler sounding volume. Both Richardson number and wind shear statistics were then examined along with pilot reports of turbulence in the vicinity of the profiler. Fairall, Christopher W. and Thomson, Dennis W.
