Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume VIII discusses a number of themes on physical acoustics that are divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 describes the principles and applications of a tool for investigating phonons in dielectric crystals, the spin phonon spectrometer. The next chapter discusses the use of ultrasound in investigating Landau quantum oscillations in the presence of a magnetic field and their relation to the strain dependence of the Fermi surface of metals. The third chapter focuses on the ultrasonic measurements that are made by pulsing methods with velocities obtained through phase comparison methods and attenuations obtained through comparing pulse heights for successive reflections. In Chapter 4, methods for measuring the properties of solids and liquids at very high pressures are described. Chapter 5 explores some of the relationships between the thermal equilibrium properties of solids and mechanical properties such as the second- and third-order elastic constants. The sixth chapter discusses the interaction of sound waves with thermal phonons in dielectric crystals and emphasizes the relationship between the various theories proposed and the effect of phonon interactions on the velocity of sound. The last chapter describes the applications to metals and rock mechanics of internal friction at low frequencies due to dislocations. This book is beneficial to students and physicists conducting work on physical acoustics.

Book Nonequilibrium Phonon Dynamics

Download or read book Nonequilibrium Phonon Dynamics written by Walter E. Bron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phonons are always present in the solid state even at an absolute temperature of 0 K where zero point vibrations still abound. Moreover, phonons interact with all other excitations of the solid state and, thereby, influence most of its properties. Historically experimental information on phonon transport came from measurements of thermal conductivity. Over the past two decades much more, and much more detailed, information on phonon transport and on many of the inherent phonon interaction processes have come to light from experiments which use nonequilibrium phonons to study their dynamics. The resultant research field has most recently blossomed with the development of ever more sophisticated experimental and theoretical methods which can be applied to it. In fact, the field is moving so rapidly that new members of the research community have difficulties in keeping up to date. This NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) was organized with the objective of overcoming the information barrier between those expert in the field and those who are new to it. Thus it was decided to (i) organize a set of tutorially based lectures covering most of the important facets in the field, and (ii) to produce an Institute proceedings which would serve both as the first general textbook, as well as a valuable reference book, for this field of knowledge.

Book Harmonic Generation of Microwave Phonons

Download or read book Harmonic Generation of Microwave Phonons written by Paul Henry Carr and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to produce coherent phonons of microwave frequency provides a much needed means of investigating fundamental phenomena in solid state physics at frequencies never before attained. It is shown for the first time that second and third harmonics of the fundamental acoustic wave are also generated. The fact that the secondharmonic acoustic power was observed to be proportional to the square of the fundamental and the third-harmonic acoustic power proportional to the cube of the fundamental establishes the nonlinearity of the generation mechanism. Second-harmonic generation of longitudinal phonons in nonpiezoelectric Z-cut quartz was observed. The generation mechanism is common to all dielectric media. This demonstrates that coherent phonon generation is not restricted to relatively rare piezoelectric materials. The highest frequency at which microwave phonons can be generated is limited to 80 Gcps by present-day highpower microwave sources. The successful generation of harmonics of microwave phonons enhances the possibility of extending the present limit well into the millimeter range. Fundamental research of this type can lead to such practical control devices as microwave delay lines since the acoustic delay time of one centimeter of quartz is the same as that of 500 meters of waveguide. Book Acoustic Waves

Download or read book Acoustic Waves written by Don Dissanayake and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SAW devices are widely used in multitude of device concepts mainly in MEMS and communication electronics. As such, SAW based micro sensors, actuators and communication electronic devices are well known applications of SAW technology. For example, SAW based passive micro sensors are capable of measuring physical properties such as temperature, pressure, variation in chemical properties, and SAW based communication devices perform a range of signal processing functions, such as delay lines, filters, resonators, pulse compressors, and convolvers. In recent decades, SAW based low-powered actuators and microfluidic devices have significantly added a new dimension to SAW technology. This book consists of 20 exciting chapters composed by researchers and engineers active in the field of SAW technology, biomedical and other related engineering disciplines. The topics range from basic SAW theory, materials and phenomena to advanced applications such as sensors actuators, and communication systems. As such, in addition to theoretical analysis and numerical modelling such as Finite Element Modelling (FEM) and Finite Difference Methods (FDM) of SAW devices, SAW based actuators and micro motors, and SAW based micro sensors are some of the exciting applications presented in this book. This collection of up-to-date information and research outcomes on SAW technology will be of great interest, not only to all those working in SAW based technology, but also to many more who stand to benefit from an insight into the rich opportunities that this technology has to offer, especially to develop advanced, low-powered biomedical implants and passive communication devices.

Book Length Scale Dependent Phonon Interactions

Download or read book Length Scale Dependent Phonon Interactions written by Subhash L. Shindé and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive description of phonons and their interactions in systems with different dimensions and length scales. Internationally-recognized leaders describe theories and measurements of phonon interactions in relation to the design of materials with exotic properties such as metamaterials, nano-mechanical systems, next-generation electronic, photonic, and acoustic devices, energy harvesting, optical information storage, and applications of phonon lasers in a variety of fields. The emergence of techniques for control of semiconductor properties and geometry has enabled engineers to design structures in which functionality is derived from controlling electron behavior. As manufacturing techniques have greatly expanded the list of available materials and the range of attainable length scales, similar opportunities now exist for designing devices whose functionality is derived from controlling phonon behavior. However, progress in this area is hampered by gaps in our knowledge of phonon transport across and along arbitrary interfaces, the scattering of phonons with crystal defects, interface roughness and mass-mixing, delocalized electrons/collective electronic excitations, and solid acoustic vibrations when these occur in structures with small physical dimensions. This book provides a comprehensive description of phonons and their interactions in systems with different dimensions and length scales. Theories and measurements of phonon interactions are described in relation to the design of materials with exotic properties such as metamaterials, nano-mechanical systems, next-generation electronic, photonic, and acoustic devices, energy harvesting, optical information storage, and applications of phonon lasers in a variety of fields.
