Book On the Theory of the Reflection and Refraction of Light

Download or read book On the Theory of the Reflection and Refraction of Light written by Hendrik Antoon Lorentz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1997 - the centennial year of the electron - provides a good occasion to publish the first English translation ever made of H.A. Lorentz's doctoral dissertation of 1875. Just 22 years old, Lorentz took up and handled magisterially one major unresolved problem of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, the reflection and refraction of light. By then the superiority of Maxwell's electromagnetic ether theory over current elastic solid conceptions such as Fresnel's was not nearly a settled issue. In his dissertation, Lorentz strove with considerable success to make it that. Still, he found that neither theory allowed for a satisfactory account of dispersion. One intriguing aspect of Lorentz's earliest scientific achievement (which within two years was to earn him the chair of theoretical physics at Leyden University) is that a range of subjects soon to occupy him for the rest of his life are already clearly foreshadowed in it. So far, Lorentz's first step in science has existed only in the original Dutch, and in a French translation made long ago as part of the Collected Works. Here, the joint translators have striven to provide a fluently readable, full text while preserving the flavor of Lorentz' original language and style.

Book Theory of Reflection of Electromagnetic and Particle Waves

Download or read book Theory of Reflection of Electromagnetic and Particle Waves written by John Lekner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for scientists and engineers whose work involves wave reflec tion or transmission. Most of the book is written in the language of electromagnetic theory, but, as the title suggests, many of the results can be applied to particle waves, specifically to those satisfying the Schr6dinger equation. The mathematical connection between electromagnetic s (or TE) waves and quantum particle waves is established in Chapter 1. The main results for s waves are translated into quantum mechanical language in the Appendix. There is also a close analogy between acoustic waves and electromagnetic p (or TM) waves, as shown in Section 1-4. Thus the book, though primarily intended for those working in optics, microwaves and radio, will be of use to physicists, chemists and electrical engineers studying reflection and transmission of particles at potential barriers. The tech niques developed here can also be used by those working in acoustics, ocean ography and seismology. Chapter 1 is recommended for all readers: it introduces reflection phenomena, defines the notation, and previews (in Section 1-6) the contents of the rest of the book. This preview will not be duplicated here. We note only that applied topics do appear: two examples are the important phenomenon of attenuated total reflection in Chapter 8, and the reflectivity of multilayer dielectric mirrors in Chapter 12. The subject matter is restricted to linear classical electrodynamics in non-magnetic media, and the corresponding particle analogues.

Book Electromagnetic Theory and Wave Propagation

Download or read book Electromagnetic Theory and Wave Propagation written by S. N. Ghosh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the fundamental concepts of Maxwell remain for the most part unchanged since their inception, electromagnetic theory has continued to evolve, extending, most significantly, to shorter and shorter wavelengths. This has revealed many of nature's mysteries. And led to a myriad of applications that have literally changed our world. The second edition of Electromagnetic Theory and Wave Propagation begins by presenting the basic concepts of electromagnetic theory, then explores the field's extended areas primarily discovered after World War II. The author elaborates on the work of pioneer investigators, particularly with respect to the identity of light and electromagnetic waves and then derives the fundamental laws of optics from electromagnetic considerations. He has also added several new topics including meteor astronomy, remote sensing and, most notably, discussions on relativistic electrodynamics.

Book Intermediate Electromagnetic Theory

Download or read book Intermediate Electromagnetic Theory written by Joseph V. Stewart and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable text has been developed to provide students with more background on the applications of electricity and magnetism, particularly with those topics which relate to current research. For example, waveguides (both metal and dielectric) are discussed more thoroughly than in most texts because they are an important laboratory tool and important components of modern communications. In a sense, this book modernizes the topics covered in the typical course on electricity and magnetism. It provides not only solid background for the student who chooses a field which uses techniques requiring knowledge of electricity and magnetism, but also general background for the physics major.

  • Author : Bruce J. Hunt
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 1994-09-15
  • ISBN : 1501703277
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book The Maxwellians written by Bruce J. Hunt and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994-09-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Clerk Maxwell published the Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism in 1873. At his death, six years later, his theory of the electromagnetic field was neither well understood nor widely accepted. By the mid-1890s, however, it was regarded as one of the most fundamental and fruitful of all physical theories. Bruce J. Hunt examines the joint work of a group of young British physicists—G. F. FitzGerald, Oliver Heaviside, and Oliver Lodge—along with a key German contributor, Heinrich Hertz. It was these "Maxwellians" who transformed the fertile but half-finished ideas presented in the Treatise into the concise and powerful system now known as "Maxwell's theory."

Book Electromagnetic Theory for Microwaves and Optoelectronics

Download or read book Electromagnetic Theory for Microwaves and Optoelectronics written by Kequian Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a first-year graduate text on electromagnetic fields and waves. It is the translated and revised edition of the Chinese version with the same title published by the Publishing House of Electronic Industry (PHEI) of China in 1994. The text is based on the graduate course lectures on "Advanced Elec trodynamics" given by the authors at Tsinghua University. More than 300 students from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Depart ment of Applied Physics have taken this course during the last decade. Their particular fields are microwave and millimeterwave theory and technology, physical electronics, optoelectronics and engineering physics. As the title of the book shows, the texts and examples in the book concentrate mainly on electromagnetic theory related to microwaves and optoelectronics, or light wave technology. However, the book can also be used as an intermediate-level text or reference book on electromagnetic fields and waves for students and scientists engaged in research in neighboring fields.

  • Author : Thomas Preston
  • Publisher : Forgotten Books

Download or read book The Theory of Light written by Thomas Preston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Light In undertaking the preparation of this fourth edition I felt, both on account of my respect for its late author and because the book has been so successful, that I ought to leave untouched, as far as possible, the main body of the text. Accordingly in this respect changes have only been made where such were necessary, in order to correct the few errors or inaccuracies which I have noticed, or to which I have seen attention directed occasionally in scientific papers. I have not considered it necessary to mark these alterations in any special way, but I gladly acknowledge here the assistance which such references have given me. The developments that have taken place since the publication of the third edition have rendered necessary a fuller treatment of dispersion, an account of radiation phenomena in a magnetic field, and a more complete presentation of the electromagnetic theory. The additions that I have made to the text in these respects and those referring to recent experimental work cover some thirty pages, and these I have enclosed in { } brackets. In view of the size of the book, I could only aim in these additions at giving an introductory account of the theories and work to which they refer. I hope, however, that they will materially increase the usefulness of the book, and, while encouraging the student to consult original sources, enable him to do so with advantage. I have endeavoured to give full references to the sources on which I have drawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
