Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Corn-Laws: The Speech of Hon. C. P. Villiers, M. P., In the House of Commons, on Wednesday, 1st of April, 1840 Exceeding any other. I wish, therefore, that the question was with those who could do more justice to it than myself, and still more that it was with those who had the power to do the people justice. I had, indeed, well hoped that 'ere now, that the landed proprietary of this country, would, in consideration of that deep distress which is now pervading and bearing down the productive classes of our community, have given some sign of intending to relax the rigours of their law, and that what has hitherto been denied to the claims of justice, might yet have been granted on the grounds of mercy. Three months have, however, passed away since the Parliament assembled, and not a Whisper of such an intention has been heard on the contrary, the same querulous note has been sounded in another place about agitation, and the same haughty and ill-placed observations respecting its object while, in this House, we have seen that the usual efforts have been made to procure some proof of opinion in favour of the law, but, in truth, proving nothing but the influence so commonly used by the landholders over their dependents; and showing nothing, as it appears, but the determination of the class to maintain the law unchanged. Having, however, mooted this matter before in this House, some confidence is placed in me that I will not suffer it to slumber and I cannot, there fore, allow more time to escape without asking the majority of this House to recon sider the decision they gave on it last Ses sion, and seriously to review the grounds on which they rested their Opinion, and which I apprehend to have been, that the law works well, that it has satisfied the purpose for which it was enacted, and that it ought to be maintained. Book Savage Fortune

Download or read book Savage Fortune written by Lyn Boothman and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The eighty-three documents presented here, varied in length and character, are not all concerned with Suffolk, but they are all connected with the eventful lives of Sir Thomas (later Viscount) Savage and his wife Elizabeth Savage (later Countress Rivers), who married in 1602 and whose homes included Melford Hall." "Thomas and Elizabeth both inherited considerable estates in Suffolk, Essex and Cheshire. Within a tight circle of aristocratic Catholics, they became prominent servants of the royal family during the reigns of James I and Charles I. After Thomas's death in 1635, Elizabeth remained an intimate of the queen, but her two houses of St. Osyth's and Melford Hall were sacked in 1642, and she remained chronically short of money up to her death in 1651." "The central document is a remarkable inventory of 1635-6, taken after Thomas died, listing the contents of Melford Hall in Suffolk, Rocksavage in Cheshire and a town house on Tower Hill in London."--BOOK JACKET.
