Book Butterfly Wing Patterns and Mimicry

Download or read book Butterfly Wing Patterns and Mimicry written by Kenzie Payne and published by Murphy & Moore Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lepidopteran is an order of insects, which includes butterflies and moths. Insects of this order have unique color patterns on their wings. Butterfly wing patterns have identities that can be traced from species to species and typically across genera and families. The evolution and diversification of butterflies can be studied based on homologies among pattern elements and identities. Individuated patterns among the butterflies have emerged from non-individuated precursors that become developmentally autonomous for color pattern formation. This process involves the compartmentalization of the wing areas that in turn leads to the creation of color patterns characterized by repeated elements and emergence of serial homology. Various researches have studied the similarities in the vivid wing patterns of various butterflies and moth species. They have also observed that these patterns usually change rapidly in accordance with the mimicry theory. This theory deals with the organisms which develop a phenotypic similarity to another organism for selective benefits. This theory upholds that phenotypic similarity evolves due to natural selection. Different evaluations and advanced studies on wing patterns and mimicry have been included in this book. Those in search of information to further their knowledge will be greatly assisted by it.

Download or read book 100 Butterflies and Moths written by Jeffrey C. Miller and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walking a forest trail in Costa Rica, a visitor might be struck by the sight of an iridescent blue morpho butterfly fluttering ahead in the filtered daylight, or an enormous silk moth, as magnificently patterned and subtly colored as a Persian carpet, only emerging to fly at night. Elsewhere, vivid yellow and orange sulphur butterflies flock to puddles to sip the concentrated minerals. Such is the dazzling variety of the butterflies and moths unique to this region. Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen and Winifred Hallwachs in the forests of northwestern Costa Rica, 100 tropical butterflies and moths represent the diversity in large-format photographs by Jeffrey Miller that document the dizzying variety of shapes, colors, and markings. The photographs are accompanied by species accounts and images of the corresponding caterpillar. The authors recount these insects' feats of mimicry and migration, lift the veil on their courtship, and show how the new technology of DNA barcoding is changing the picture of Lepidopteran biodiversity. The authors also tell the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, a team of caterpillar collectors, and the participation of neighboring farming communities has deepened understanding of Costa Rica's Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biotechnology, and ecotourism development.

This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moths and Butterflies of the United States, East of the Rocky Mountains, Vol. 1: With Over 400 Photographic Illustrations in the Text and Many Transfers of Species From Life Scientific works on butter ies are not rare in most libraries; but to the enthusiast who loves these creatures for their beauty and varietyr there is usually very little of interest in scientific details. It is the aim of the present work to represent our native butter ies and moths not as dried and mutilated specimens in a cabinet, with pins stuck through them, nor as dissected fragments for scientific classification, but as one sees them in our woods and fields, fresh and lovely. From the standpoint of the artist and the decorator, the study of the de signs and color patterns on the wings of butter ies may be of valuable assist ance. Such combinations of pleasing tints are rarely found in the handiworks of man. What better school could be found for the colorist than is within the reach of the humblest aspirant for fame as artist or decorator? Think of students copying the dingy works of the old masters year after year. When at their own doors the grandest combinations of colors that Nature can produce are passed by without a thought! Te have close about us the best that Nature is capable of producing. If we but use our eyes to see it. The life histories of many of the lepidoptera are replete with interest, and the knowledge of not a few is essential to man's welfare. To the gardener or the orist the study of entomology is a necessity, and the recognition of his enemies and friends in the insect world is of first importance.
