Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lens is generally the most expensive and least understood part of any camera. In this book, Rudolf Kingslake traces the historical development of the various types of lenses from Daguerre's invention of photography in 1839 through lenses commonly used today. From an early lens still being manufactured for use in low-cost cameras to designs made possible through such innovations as lens coating, rare-earth glasses, and computer aided lens design and testing, the author details each major advance in design and fabrication. The book explains how and why each new lens type was developed, and why most of them have since been abandoned. This authoritative history of lens technology also includes brief biographies of several outstanding lens designers and manufacturers of the past.

Book The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses

Download or read book The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses written by Joseph Meehan and published by Amphoto Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite the explosion of new technology in recent years, photography is still based on certain unalterable principles involving light and lenses. The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses examines every type of lens for every format, from how to choose it to how to use it. Joseph Meehan describes the basic design and operation of standard, wide-angle, telephoto, and specialized lenses, and gives an overview of their history. For example, Meehan explains that the versatile standard lens is a fine choice for both 3/4-length and tighter profile shots. He also shows why wide-angle lenses are ideal for vistas and explains how fisheye lenses exaggerate foreground objects. The corresponding illustrations--beautiful photographs and detailed diagrams--clarify each concept." "Next, closeup and enlarging lenses are described, including specifics on macro zooms, extension tubes, bellows, diopters, and copy lenses. The section on telephoto lenses contains extensive information on film formats, aspect ratios, mirror lenses, tele-zooms, angle of view , compression, selective focus, and depth of field. The chapter on wide-angle lenses covers various wide-angle focal lengths, fisheye lenses, wide-angle zooms, perspective control, and metering problems." "Best of all, this book goes beyond fundamentals to explore how lens selection affects the content and composition of your photographs. Meehan discusses how to successfully frame pictures and how to compose action shots, and shows how different focal lengths produce different interpretations of a subject. The book concludes with information on lens testing and aberrations, special-purpose lenses (such as the soft-focus lens), filters, lens accessories, tripods and other stabilizing devices, and projector screens." "The Complete Book of Photographic Lenses is so comprehensive that it will never go out of date. This invaluable resource will help photographers who use 35mm, medium-format, large format, and panoramic cameras make the best lens choices for their creative efforts."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This lens works at /6 and the size which is best adapted for general work on a plate 8 x 6i (10'7 ins. focal length) will cover a 15 x 12 plate if a stop of /16 is used, and this with fairly equal illumination. The number of anastigmatic doublets capable of division into two good landscape lenses is now so great that even the names cannot be mentioned. The above are, however, representative examples. 16 The pass test for an Anastigmatic or Stigmatic Doublet.--The long column of Times leader having been set up as already directed Fio. 102. and to the same standard of reduction (p. 84), it should be possible to find a focal plane in which the whole is distinctly legible at the same time, the full aperture of the lens being used. If the lens has a greater rapidity than /6 a little leniency may be allowed. For the whole-plate lens (about 11 ins. focal length) the racking in for curvature of the field should not exceed one tenth of an inch, and the astigmatic difference should not be more than one twentieth of an inch, the test being made as on the margin of a whole plate, as directed (p. 84) for the case of a rapid symmetrical. In the case of lenses of longer or shorter focal length proportionate errors may be allowed. The test for achromatism is made as already directed in the case of the symmetrical. The anastigmat should pass the test absolutely, but care must be taken not to misjudge by reason of want of register between dark slide and focussing frame. A very firm and well made camera is required for this test. 17 Combining Lenses: further Notes.--The lenses described above may be combined to form doublets, and when...

Book How to Choose and Use a Lens

Download or read book How to Choose and Use a Lens written by Frank R. Fraprie and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Choose and Use a Lens: Practical Photography, No; 3 Introductory. - The purchase of a camera necessarily involves the choice of a lens, and while few beginners in photography, whether they select their cameras for themselves or acquire them by gift, make any very logical decision as to the capabilities of the outfit they desire, the time is sure to come to every amateur when intelligent knowledge of what a lens will do is necessary. We will assume that the reader is about to buy a camera, and that he knows nothing about photography. We will endeavor to show him what a lens is, and what each type now obtainable will do. With this knowledge he can study the catalogues of lens and camera manufacturers with more confidence, and decide for himself whether the expenditure of five dollars or fifty dollars for a camera and lens making a given size of picture is best for his necessities. We may say, however, that practically every step in increased price of either lens or camera is fully justified by advance in careful workmanship, increased facility of operation, or more versatile performance, and that the higher-priced outfits in case of forced sale usually bring a greater percentage of original cost.
