Book excerpt: This “outstanding” novel featuring a Boston detective searching for a judge’s missing son is a Shamus Award finalist and the first in a series (The New York Times). John Cuddy’s heart is buried in a cemetery overlooking Boston harbor. His wife, Beth, fought her cancer for nearly a year, and when she died Cuddy gave up his morning runs in favor of nightly benders. Two months after her death, he is forced out of his job as an insurance investigator for refusing to sign his name to a phony claim. Now he is filing for unemployment, cutting back on his drinking, and attempting to become a private eye. His first real case comes in the form of Valerie Jacobs, a junior high teacher who was friends with Beth. Her star pupil, the son of a Massachusetts judge, has vanished, and the local police have no leads. To make his name as a detective, Cuddy searches for a boy who’s too smart to be found, and whose father would prefer his son never return.

Book Breaking Clean

Download or read book Breaking Clean written by Judy J. Blunt and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A memoir with the fierce narrative force of an eastern Montana blizzard, rich in story and character, filled with the bone-chilling details of Blunt’s childhood. She writes without bitterness, with an abiding love of the land and the work and her family and friends that she finally left behind, at great sacrifice, to begin to write. This is a magnificent achievement, a book for the ages. I’ve never read anything that compares with it.” —James Crumley, author of The Last Good Kiss Born into a third generation of Montana homesteaders, Judy Blunt learned early how to “rope and ride and jockey a John Deere,” but also to “bake bread and can vegetables and reserve my opinion when the men were talking.” The lessons carried her through thirty-six-hour blizzards, devastating prairie fires and a period of extreme isolation that once threatened the life of her infant daughter. But though she strengthened her survival skills in what was—and is—essentially a man’s world, Blunt’s story is ultimately that of a woman who must redefine herself in order to stay in the place she loves. Breaking Clean is at once informed by the myths of the West and powerful enough to break them down. Against formidable odds, Blunt has found a voice original enough to be called classic.

Book LESFOIL Large Eddy Simulation of Flow Around a High Lift Airfoil

Download or read book LESFOIL Large Eddy Simulation of Flow Around a High Lift Airfoil written by Lars Davidson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulation is a relatively new and still evolving computatio nal strategy for predicting turbulent flows. It is now widely used in research to elucidate fundamental interactions in physics of turbulence, to predict phe nomena which are closely linked to the unsteady features of turbulence and to create data bases against which statistical closure models can be asses sed. However, its applicability to complex industrial flows, to which statisti cal models are applied routinely, has not been established with any degree of confidence. There is, in particular, a question mark against the prospect of LES becoming an economically tenable alternative to Reynolds-averaged N avier-Stokes methods at practically high Reynolds numbers and in complex geometries. Aerospace flows pose particularly challenging problems to LES, because of the high Reynolds numbers involved, the need to resolve accura tely small-scale features in the thin and often transitional boundary layers developing on aerodynamic surfaces. When the flow also contains a separated region - due to high incidence, say - the range and disparity of the influen tial scales to be resolved is enormous, and this substantially aggravates the problems of resolution and cost. It is just this combination of circumstances that has been at the heart of the project LESFOIL to which this book is devoted. The project combined the efforts, resources and expertise of 9 partner organisations, 4 universities, 3 industrial companies and 2 research institu tes.

Book Industry 5 0 and Paradigm Shift Emerging Challenges

Download or read book Industry 5 0 and Paradigm Shift Emerging Challenges written by Namit Gupta and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industry 5.0 is the successor of the 'Industry 4.0' concept which employed high technology in the manufacturing industry. Industry 5.0 is a new idea that adds a human touch to the work of robots and smart machines. The basic idea of humans and machines working together is to increase efficiency and effectivity, like the 'Internet of things' (loT). It aims to merge the increasing cognitive computing abilities of the robots with the intelligence and resourcefulness of the humans. The progress of Industry 5.0 is inevitable. As the technology grows more each day, we find ways to make our work simpler. The development of such technologies to make the world more efficient requires its manufacturers, i.e., humans who collaborate with these machines and technologies. Humans are indispensable resources, as what a machine can do is limited. And with all these efficiencies we have come so far, there is no path leading us back. With adoption of new concepts comes a paradigm shift as development continues and we move from Industry 4.0 which speaks of the "future of production," its primary purpose continues to be achieving seamless connectivity between machines and IT systems for higher productivity and efficiencies across the value chain. Overall, it focuses mainly on traditional financial and operational KPIs. Whereas Industry 5.0 gives a human touch to the concept of 4.0 keeping in mind the well-being of the environment and society, making the machines and humans work together on a path of 'Green Future'. Industry 5.0 has the balance of both humans and technologies which benefits the ecosystem, with discovery of new energy sources and renewable resources, helping in a sustainable working environment. It can be used to reduce harmful residue caused due to manufacturing processes and recycle rare materials. Taking this theme, the multidisciplinary congress on "Industry 5.0 and Paradigm Shift: Emerging Challenges" will highlight research challenges and open issues that should be further developed to realize Industry 5.0.
