The relevant applications are ones in which the regression disturbance follows a moving average process of known order. In a system of þ equations, this `MA-þ' estimator entails estimation of the moving average coefficients of an þ-dimensional vector. Simulations indicate that the MA-þ estimator's finite sample performance is better than that of the estimators of Andrews and Monahan (1992) and Newey and West (1994) when cross-products of instruments and disturbances are sharply negatively autocorrelated, comparable or slightly worse otherwise.

Book excerpt: In the presence of heteroskedasticity, conventional test statistics based on the ordinary least square estimator lead to incorrect inference results for the linear regression model. Given that heteroskedasticity is common in cross-sectional data, the test statistics based on various forms of heteroskedasticity consistent covariance matrices (HCCMs) have been developed in the literature. In contrast to the standard linear regression model, heteroskedasticity is a more serious problem for spatial econometric models, generally causing inconsistent extremum estimators of model coefficients. In this paper, we investigate the finite sample properties of the heteroskedasticity-robust generalized method of moments estimator (RGMME) for a spatial econometric model with an unknown form of hetereoskedasticity. In particular, we develop various HCCM-type corrections to improve the finite sample properties of the RGMME and the conventional Wald test. Our Monte Carlo results indicate that the HCCM-type corrections can produce more accurate results for inference on model parameters and the impact effects estimates in small samples.

A standard approach to these goals is through parametric mod elling. Parametric models can give a problem sufficient structure to allow standard, well understood paradigms to be applied to make the required inferences. If, how ever, the parametric model is not completely correct, then the standard inferential methods may not give reasonable answers. In the last quarter century, particularly with the advent of readily available computing, more attention has been paid to the problem of inference when the parametric model used is not correctly specified.

Book excerpt: This paper develops asymptotic distribution theory for generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators and test statistics when some of the parameters are well identified, but others are poorly identified because of weak instruments. The asymptotic theory entails applying empirical process theory to obtain a limiting representation of the (concentrated) objective function as a stochastic process. The general results are specialized to two leading cases, linear instrumental variables regression and GMM estimation of Euler equations obtained from the consumption-based capital asset pricing model with power utility. Numerical results of the latter model confirm that finite sample distributions can deviate substantially from normality, and indicate that these deviations are captured by the weak instruments asymptotic approximations.

Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the performance of heteroskedasticity-and-autocorrelation-consistent (HAC) covariance matrix estimators in which the residuals are prewhitened using a vector autoregressive (VAR) filter. We highlight the pitfalls of using an arbitrarily fixed lag order for the VAR filter, and we demonstrate the benefits of using a model selection criterion (either AIC or BIC) to determine its lag structure. Furthermore, once data-dependent VAR prewhitening has been utilized, we find negligible or even counter-productive effects of applying standard kernel-based methods to the prewhitened residuals; that is, the performance of the prewhitened kernel estimator is virtually indistinguishable from that of the VARHAC estimator.

For both in- and out-of-sample applications, I derive asymptotic distributions and propose feasible procedures to construct confidence intervals and test statistics. Procedures that are asymptotically valid under the null of encompassing (e.g., Davidson and MacKinnon (1981)) can have large asymptotic and finite sample distortions. Simulations indicate that the proposed procedures can work well in samples of size typically available, though the divergence between actual and nominal confidence interval coverage sometimes is large.

Book excerpt: Analytic evaluation of heteroskedasticity consistent covariance matrix estimates (HCCME) is difficult because of the complexity of the formulae currently available. We obtain new analytic formulae for the bias of a class of estimators of the covariance matrix of OLS in a standard linear regression model. These formulae provide substantial insight into the properties and performance characteristics of these estimators. In particular, we find a new estimator which minimizes the maximum possible bias and improves substantially on the standard Eicker-White estimate.
