Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accosiative rings and algebras are very interesting algebraic structures. In a strict sense, the theory of algebras (in particular, noncommutative algebras) originated fromasingleexample, namelythequaternions, createdbySirWilliamR.Hamilton in1843. Thiswasthe?rstexampleofanoncommutative”numbersystem”. During thenextfortyyearsmathematiciansintroducedotherexamplesofnoncommutative algebras, began to bring some order into them and to single out certain types of algebras for special attention. Thus, low-dimensional algebras, division algebras, and commutative algebras, were classi?ed and characterized. The ?rst complete results in the structure theory of associative algebras over the real and complex ?elds were obtained by T.Molien, E.Cartan and G.Frobenius. Modern ring theory began when J.H.Wedderburn proved his celebrated cl- si?cation theorem for ?nite dimensional semisimple algebras over arbitrary ?elds. Twenty years later, E.Artin proved a structure theorem for rings satisfying both the ascending and descending chain condition which generalized Wedderburn structure theorem. The Wedderburn-Artin theorem has since become a corn- stone of noncommutative ring theory. The purpose of this book is to introduce the subject of the structure theory of associative rings. This book is addressed to a reader who wishes to learn this topic from the beginning to research level. We have tried to write a self-contained book which is intended to be a modern textbook on the structure theory of associative rings and related structures and will be accessible for independent study.

Book Cyclic Modules and the Structure of Rings

Download or read book Cyclic Modules and the Structure of Rings written by S. K. Jain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and comprehensive volume provides an up-to-date account of the literature on the subject of determining the structure of rings over which cyclic modules or proper cyclic modules have a finiteness condition or a homological property. The finiteness conditions and homological properties are closely interrelated in the sense that either hypothesis induces the other in some form. This is the first book to bring all of this important material on the subject together. Over the last 25 years or more numerous mathematicians have investigated rings whose factor rings or factor modules have a finiteness condition or a homological property. They made important contributions leading to new directions and questions, which are listed at the end of each chapter for the benefit of future researchers. There is a wealth of material on the topic which is combined in this book, it contains more than 200 references and is not claimed to be exhaustive. This book will appeal to graduate students, researchers, and professionals in algebra with a knowledge of basic noncommutative ring theory, as well as module theory and homological algebra, equivalent to a one-year graduate course in the theory of rings and modules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A completely reworked new edition of this superb textbook. This key work is geared to the needs of the graduate student. It covers, with proofs, the usual major branches of groups, rings, fields, and modules. Its inclusive approach means that all of the necessary areas are explored, while the level of detail is ideal for the intended readership. The text tries to promote the conceptual understanding of algebra as a whole, doing so with a masterful grasp of methodology. Despite the abstract subject matter, the author includes a careful selection of important examples, together with a detailed elaboration of the more sophisticated, abstract theories.

Download or read book Introduction to Algebra written by R. Kochendorffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a textbook for an undergraduate course on algebra. In most universities a detailed study ·of abstract algebraic systems commences in the second year. By this time the student has gained some experience in mathematical reasoning so that a too elementary book would rob him of the joy and the stimulus of using his ability. I tried to make allowance for this when I chose t4e level of presentation. On the other hand, I hope that I also avoided discouraging the reader by demands which are beyond his strength. So, the first chapters will certainly not require more mathematical maturity than can reasonably be expected after the first year at the university. Apart from one exception the formal prerequisites do not exceed the syllabus of an average high school. As to the exception, I assume that the reader is familiar with the rudiments of linear algebra, i. e. addition and multiplication of matrices and the main properties of determinants. In view of the readers for whom the book is designed I felt entitled to this assumption. In the first chapters, matrices will almost exclusively occur in examples and exercises providing non-trivial instances in the theory of groups and rings. In Chapters 9 and 10 only, vector spaces and their properties will form a relevant part of the text. A reader who is not familiar with these concepts will have no difficulties in acquiring these prerequisites by any elementary textbook, e. g. [10].

Download or read book The Theory of Rings written by Nathan Jacobson and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1943-12-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is mainly concerned with the theory of rings in which both maximal and minimal conditions hold for ideals (except in the last chapter, where rings of the type of a maximal order in an algebra are considered). The central idea consists of representing rings as rings of endomorphisms of an additive group, which can be achieved by means of the regular representation.

Such modules call for a special consideration, since they have specific properties and play an important role in various areas of algebra, especially of commutative algebra. The text is accompanied by exercises, historical remarks, links to related fields and open problems. It is useful for students, graduates studying algebra, young researchers, and experts."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Rings and Things and a Fine Array of Twentieth Century Associative Algebra

Download or read book Rings and Things and a Fine Array of Twentieth Century Associative Algebra written by Carl Clifton Faith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys more than 125 years of aspects of associative algebras, especially ring and module theory. It is the first to probe so extensively such a wealth of historical development. Moreover, the author brings the reader up to date, in particular through his report on the subject in the second half of the twentieth century. Included in the book are certain categorical properties from theorems of Frobenius and Stickelberger on the primary decomposition of finite Abelian formulations of the latter by Krull, Goldman, and others; Maschke's theorem on the representation theory of finite groups over a field; and the fundamental theorems of Wedderburn on the structure of finite dimensional algebras Goldie, and others. A special feature of the book is the in-depth study of rings with chain condition on annihilator ideals pioneered by Noether, Artin, and Jacobson and refined and extended by many later mathematicians. Two of the author's prior works, Algebra: Rings, Modules and Categories, I and II (Springer-Verlag, 1973), are devoted to the development of modern associative algebra and ring and module theory. Those bibliography of over 1,600 references and is exhaustively indexed. In addition to the mathematical survey, the author gives candid and descriptive impressions of the last half of the twentieth century in ''Part II: Snapshots of fellow graduate students at the University of Kentucky and at Purdue, Faith discusses his Fulbright-Nato Postdoctoral at Heidelberg and at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton, his year as a visiting scholar at Berkeley, and the many acquaintances he met there and in subsequent travels in India, Europe, and most recently, Barcelona. Comments on the first edition: ''Researchers in algebra should find it both full references as to the origin and development of the theorem ... I know of no other work in print which does this as thoroughly and as broadly.'' --John O'Neill, University of Detroit at Mercy '' 'Part II: Snapshots of Mathematicians of my age and younger will relish reading 'Snapshots'.'' --James A. Huckaba, University of Missouri-Columbia
