Book excerpt: From award winning children's writer Niki Daly, author and illustrator of the Lolo early reader series Whether it's jumping in puddles with Tata in the rain, greeting the neighborhood cat on the quiet back streets with Gogo, or holding hands with Mama while rushing to make the bell, walking to school with family is the best. But nothing is better than walking to school with Papa. From high above, resting on Papa's shoulders, all of the town is in perfect view, and Papa always says "I love you" when he says goodbye. A sweet ode to fatherhood and the special relationships children share with each member of their family, On My Papa's Shoulders reminds us that it's not about where we're going, but rather the people who walk with us along the way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fantastical game of political intrigue played by a fraud, where the grumpy snark of K. S. Villoso’s The Wolf of Oren-Yaro meets a rich Eastern European–inflected world akin to Ava Reid’s The Wolf and the Woodsman. A plucky, sardonic con artist must “prophesize” her way out of peril— discovering along the way that the keys to power and politics are nothing more than the stories that we can sell as truth. Kalyna’s family has the Gift: the ability to see the future. For generations, they traveled the four kingdoms of the Tetrarchia selling their services as soothsayers. Every child of their family is born with this Gift—everyone except Kalyna. So far, Kalyna has used informants and trickery to falsify prophecies for coin, scrounging together a living for her deteriorating father and cruel grandmother. But Kalyna’s reputation for prophecy precedes her, and poverty turns to danger when she is pressed into service by the spymaster to Rotfelsen. Kalyna is to use her “Gift” to uncover threats against Rotfelsen’s king, her family held hostage to ensure her good behavior. But politics are devious; the king’s enemies abound, and Kalyna’s skills for investigation and deception are tested to the limit. Worse, the conspiracy she uncovers points to a larger threat, not only to Rotfelsen but to the Tetrarchia itself. Kalyna is determined to protect her family and newfound friends, but as she is drawn deeper into palace intrigue, she can no longer tell if her manipulations are helping prevent the Tetrarchia’s destruction—or if her lies will bring about its prophesized downfall.

Book Ignorance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michèle Roberts
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2013-01-22
  • ISBN : 1608197883
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Ignorance written by Michèle Roberts and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-01-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every war there are stories that do not surface. You can try to forget, but sometimes the past can return: in the scent of a bar of soap, in whispers darting through a village after mass, in the color of an undelivered letter. Jeanne Nerin and Marie-Angèle Baudry grow up side by side in the Catholic village of Ste. Madeleine, but their worlds could not be more different. Marie-Angèle is the grocer's daughter, inflated with ideas of her own piety and rightful place in society. Jeanne's mother washes clothes for a living. She used to be a Jew until this became too dangerous. Jeanne does not think twice about stealing food when she is hungry, nor about grasping the slender chances life throws at her. Marie-Angèle does not grasp; she aspires to a life of comfort and influence. When war falls out of the sky, the forces that divide the two girls threaten to overwhelm those that bind them together. In this dizzying new order, the truth can be buried under a pyramid of recriminations. Michèle Roberts's new novel is a mesmerizing exploration of guilt, faith, desire, and judgment, bringing to life a people at war in a way that is at once lyrical and shocking.

Book The Songs of Manolo Escobar

Download or read book The Songs of Manolo Escobar written by Carlos Alba and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suspicion had been fomenting within me for some time that our family was different. Why, for example, were Pablito, my elder brother, and I dark-haired with olive skin when the rest of my classmates were sandy and pale? Why did our family have a second way of speaking, which I didn't understand? Why was ours the only home I knew where the walls were dominated with pictures of men in spangly waistcoats and tight trousers?' For Antonio, growing up Spanish in Glasgow is a nightmare - one of shame and potential embarrassment on every front. But there is no hiding his ethnicity: his noisy, bullying father, even his gentle mother and her quest for olives and exotic meats, put paid to that. It is only as he grows older, and can see his father for what he is, a reluctant exile washed up on the cold shores of Scotland, that Antonio begins to understand what terrible forces drove his father to flee 40 years before. Unravelling his father's secret life piece by piece, Antonio discovers a truth that will shock and heal him.

Book Nissa s Place

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. Lafaye
  • Publisher : ReadHowYouWant.com
  • Release : 2010-10-08
  • ISBN : 1458715981
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Nissa s Place written by A. Lafaye and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LaFaye surpasses the lyricism and emotional depth of her sparkling debut, The Year of the Sawdust Man, in this sequel. It's been two years since Nissa's mother, Heirah Rae, left the family and Depression-era Harper, La., for a new life in Chicago. Nissa, now 13, believes she must preserve her mother's presence in the household. When Heirah Rae calls home to announce her birthday gift to Nissa, a trip to Chicago, she upsets the tenuous relationship between Nissa, her father, Ivar, and her stepmother, Lara. Still feeling abandoned but hungry for time with her mother, Nissa decides to travel back to Chicago with Heirah Rae, who shows up on their doorstep. During her stay in Chicago, Nissa notes how her mother has blossomed away from Harper's nosy scandalmongers. LaFaye achieves just the right balance between Nissa's introspection and the adventures she has with her mother. The intricate prose mirrors the fragile complexity of Nissa's feelings about returning to Harper: ""My heart shrunk a little as the train pulled away, but I knew I'd made the right choice. I could feel it like a warm blanket on a cold nightAa tight, satisfied feeling deep down inside strong enough to carry me home."" Readers will be moved as Nissa comes to view Heirah Rae's flight as an act of courage and a spur for Nissa to make her own dream of a library in Harper come true is most successful when he mixes his different approaches into the original sort of magic realism he creates in the title tale, which concerns an erotically charged encounter between a virginal Irish au pair, Nula, and a Moroccan student, Henri Tatahouine, in Paris. The hallucinatory quality of Henri's account of his life leaves Nula emotionally blistered, as though she had been in the Sahara. The comic, horrifying """"Cats in Space,"""" which tells the tale of a group of kids who use helium balloons to launch a kitten into the air, is similarly effective. Though uneven, Kalfus's collection is ambitious and daring, with smart, fluid prose and an abundance of surprises.
