Book excerpt: Energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) can be used to measure nondestructively pure and mixed U/Pu concentrations in process streams and hold tank solutions. The 122-keV gamma ray from 57Co excites the actinide K x rays which are detected by a HPGe detector. A computer- and disk-based analyzer system provides capability for making on-stream analyses, and the noninvasive measurement is easily adapted directly to appropriate sized pipes used in a chemical reprocessing plant. Measurement times depend on concentration and purpose but vary from 100 to 500s for process control of strong to weak solutions. Accountability measurements require better accuracy thus more time; and for solutions containing plutonium, require a measurement of the solution radioactivity made with an automatic shutter that eclipses the two exciting sources. Plutonium isotopic abundances can also be obtained. Concentrations in single or dual element solutions from less than 1 g/l to over 200 g/l are determined to an accuracy of 0.2% after calibration of the system. For mixed solutions the unknown ratio of U to Pu is linearly related to the net U/Pu K x-ray intensities. Concentration values for ratios different than the calibration ratio require only small corrections to the values derived from a calibration polynomial. Minor fission product contamination does not prevent concentration determinations by XRFA. The computer-based system also allows real-time dynamic concentration measurements to be made.

Book Transmission corrected X ray Fluorescence Analysis of Uranium and Plutonium Solutions Using a Dual Transmission Source

Download or read book Transmission corrected X ray Fluorescence Analysis of Uranium and Plutonium Solutions Using a Dual Transmission Source written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) technique has been implemented at several spent nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities for nondestructive measurements of uranium and/or plutonium concentrations in process streams and product storage tanks. An important factor in these quantitative measurements is the absorption of the fluoresced x-rays by the solution matrix, which must be taken into account to accurately quantify the U or Pu concentrations. We describe a new, accurate method using a dual transmission source of Gd-153 and Co-57 to correct for matrix effects. Results of measurements on uranium and plutonium solution standards show the methodology to be better than 0.5%, which includes statistical precision, over the concentration range from 1 to 250 g/l. 5 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Calibration of Uranium and Plutonium in Nitric Acid Solutions for X ray Fluorescence Analysis

Download or read book Calibration of Uranium and Plutonium in Nitric Acid Solutions for X ray Fluorescence Analysis written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment was statistically designed to generate calibration curves for the determination of plutonium and uranium in nitric acid solutions using the x-ray fluorescence technique. An energy dispersive spectrometer was used for all measurements, and the internal standard (ytrrium) method was used. A wide range of analyte and acid concentrations was chosen to cover varying matrices and more closely simulate actual conditions. The calibration curves generated were evaluated by examining both the bias (estimated value - true value) and the 95% confidence intervals for estimated concentrations of analytes. The absolute biases for plutonium and uranium increased with increasing concentrations. The minimum and maximum ranges for the plutonium bias are +-0.03 and +-0.09 mg/ml occurring at 0.00 and 1.99 mg/ml of plutonium, respectively. For uranium, the ranges are +-0.02 and +-0.26 mg/ml occurring at 0.00 and 13.33 mg/ml of uranium, respectively. These biases can be reduced by calibrating over narrower concentration ranges or by making replicate determinations. 12 references, 6 figures.

Book Determination of Ultratrace Concentrations of Uranium and Thorium in Natural Waters by X ray Fluorescence

Download or read book Determination of Ultratrace Concentrations of Uranium and Thorium in Natural Waters by X ray Fluorescence written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An x-ray fluorescence method for the simultaneous determination of uranium and thorium at the less than 1 ppM level in natural waters is described. Uranium and thorium are coprecipitated with an internal standard, yttrium, and incorporated into an iron-aluminum hydroxide carrier. The hydroxide precipitate is filtered, and the filter disk is analyzed by the energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence technique. Matrix interferences caused by the presence of unpredictable anions and cations are compensated for by the internal standard. The U/Y and Th/Y ratios are linear over the 5- to 100-.mu.g range of interest, and the detection limit of each element on the filter disk is 2 .mu.g (3 sigma). Relative standard deviation was 17% at the 15-.mu.g and 4% at the 100-.mu.g level for thorium and 11% at the 11-.mu.g and 2% at the 100-.mu.g level for uranium. Analysis of spiked solutions showed a recovery of 19.6 +- 0.3 .mu.g for uranium and 19.8 +- 0.3 .mu.g for thorium at the 20-.mu.g level, and the normal lower reporting limit is 5 .mu.g. Fifty disks can be routinely measured during a normal working day.
